On 4 November 2026 Google's Gemini 4 Carbon tops Arena's text board and Artificial Analysis's index but is not publicly available. The top models students can actually use are Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5, OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra and Google's Gemini 4 Argon, and the strongest coding-agent results go to Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code. For free use, the best picks are the Gemini app with Gemini Notebook, ChatGPT Free, Claude Free, Google AI Studio and GitHub Copilot.
Rankings of AI tools go out of date in weeks, so this page shows its sources and its date. The first half reports what independent leaderboards said when we read them. The second half is our own editorial ranking of free tools for students in India, with the criteria stated. All figures were read on 4 November 2026.
How to read these rankings
- Arena ranks models by human votes between anonymous answers. It measures preference, not truth, and adjacent ranks are often statistical ties.
- Artificial Analysis publishes an Intelligence Index (v5) from its own evaluation runs, with cost per task. Each row is one model at one reasoning setting, so a vendor can fill several slots. It shows no update date.
- Terminal-Bench 4.0 scores a model plus its agent harness, so it compares bundles, such as Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code against GPT-6.1 Sol in Codex.
- Preliminary means a model has few votes so far. Not available means you cannot use it yet.
- Several well-known coding leaderboards are stale and are left out: SWE-bench Verified's newest entry is from 17 February 2026, Scale's SWE-Bench Pro and the Aider board are about a year behind the newest models, and LiveCodeBench's data stops in May 2025.
The top AI models right now
Source: Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index v5. Cost is the benchmark's cost per task.
| Rank | Model (setting) | Index | Cost per task | Can students use it? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Gemini 4 Carbon (high) | 60 | $7.76 | No. Google says it is limited to trusted cyber defenders through its Fairwind Program |
| 2 | Claude Opus 5.5 (max) | 59 | $10.04 | On paid Claude plans; the Free plan has Sonnet and Haiku, not Opus |
| 3 | Gemini 4 Carbon (medium) | 58 | $6.59 | No, same model |
| 4 | Claude Opus 5.5 (xhigh) | 57 | $6.05 | Paid Claude plans |
| 5 | GPT-6 Astra (max) | 57 | $6.24 | In ChatGPT Pro and the API |
| 6 | GPT-6.1 Sol (max) | 55 | $1.27 | Paid ChatGPT plans and Codex |
Arena's text board, read on 4 November (page dated 28 October, 9 million votes), tells a similar story: Gemini 4 Carbon first (marked preliminary), then Gemini 4 Argon (1520), Claude Opus 5.5 (1509), Meta's Muse Wonder (1507) and Claude Fable 5.1 (1504). The scores are close enough that ranks 3 to 6 are effectively tied.
Best AI for coding and building apps
Source: Terminal-Bench 4.0. It scores command-line agent tasks and shows cost in tokens, which matters for students.
| Rank | Model + agent | Resolved | Token cost of the run |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Claude Opus 5.5 (max) + Claude Code | 64.8% | about $4.7k |
| 2 | Claude Sonnet 5.5 (max) + Claude Code | 61.8% | about $7.3k |
| 3 | GPT-6 Astra (max) + Codex | 58.2% | about $3.3k |
| 4 | GPT-6.1 Sol (max) + Codex | 58.2% | about $0.6k |
| 5 | Claude Fable 5.1 (max) + Claude Code | 57.9% | about $6.2k |
The top four are within each other's error margin, but the cost gap is large: GPT-6.1 Sol in Codex reached 58.2% for roughly a seventh of the top run's cost. For building web apps, Arena WebDev ranks Claude Opus 5.5 first (1810), then GPT-6 Astra (1773), Claude Sonnet 5.5 (1770), Gemini 4 Carbon (1768, preliminary) and GPT-6.1 Sol (1751).
Claude Code has no free access. Free routes are on the free AI coding assistants, free coding agents and free vibe coding tools lists.
Best AI image, video and voice tools
| Category | Leaders (Arena / Artificial Analysis) | Free access |
|---|---|---|
| Image generation | ChatGPT Images 2.5 (GPT-Image-2.5 Sunburst and Flare) rank 1 and 2 on both boards, though Arena marks them preliminary; Nano Banana 2.1 is 4th on Artificial Analysis at about $33.6 per 1,000 images against about $211 for GPT Image 2.5 | ChatGPT Free has limited image creation; the free Gemini app uses Nano Banana 2, and 2.1 needs a Google AI plan |
| Image editing | GPT-Image-2.5 Sunburst and Flare lead Arena's single-image edit board, then Microsoft's MAI-Image-2.7-Preview | Same as above |
| Video | The boards disagree: Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash is first on Arena's text-to-video board (read dated 21 September) but 10th on Artificial Analysis, where Wan 3.0 leads | Gemini Omni needs Google AI Plus, which India's one-year student plan includes |
| Text to speech | ElevenLabs Eleven v4 (Elo 1334), Eleven v4 Turbo, then Alibaba's Qwen-Audio-3.1-TTS-Plus | ElevenLabs Free gives 10,000 credits a month with no commercial licence |
| Music | Suno v6 | Free plan: 50 credits a day on v6-mini, no commercial use |
Sources: Arena's text-to-image and text-to-video boards and Artificial Analysis's image, video and speech boards.
Best open-weight models you can run yourself
On Artificial Analysis's open-weights board the best models score about 33 on the same index where the top proprietary model scores 60. The leaders, DeepSeek V4.1 Flash 1017, GLM-5.3 and MiMo-V2.6-Pro, are hundreds of billions of parameters and need servers. The laptop-sized options are far weaker: Qwen3.8 27B (Apache-2.0, an 18 GB download) scores 20, and Google's Gemma 4 comes in sizes from about 4.6 GB. India student access: what is real
- ChatGPT Go free year: OpenAI's release notes say the India promotion ended on 21 January 2026.
- Google AI Plus for students: the one India-specific student offer we could verify on a primary page is one year of Google AI Plus at no cost, to redeem by 31 December 2026. It needs a payment method and renews at about Rs 399 a month unless you cancel.
- Codex for Students: US and Canada only.
- Lovable: up to 50% off Pro for 12 months with a school email address.
- Jio's Google offer page returned Page Not Found when we checked, so we cannot confirm that offer is live.
Caveats before you rely on any ranking
- Rankings are snapshots. A new model can change a board within days.
- Human-preference boards reward style as much as accuracy. Test a tool on your own tasks before you commit.
- Vendor benchmark claims are not independent. Anthropic, Moonshot and Mistral each quote results that do not appear on the public boards we read, so we left them out.
- Free limits change often and are mostly unpublished. Treat any free tier as a way to try a tool, not as a guarantee.
