The best full-stack projects with source code have a real feature set, a licence and recent commits: the RealWorld app spec in many frameworks, MERN and Django example apps, Next.js and FastAPI products, and Spring Boot services. Run one locally, trace a request from the screen to the database, then add a feature such as login, search or payments in test mode. Start with a small repository before a large one.
Repositories were checked with the GitHub API on 4 November 2026 for licence, last commit and archived status. Several need accounts or keys, such as MongoDB Atlas, Firebase or Razorpay test keys, and the Check first line says so. For project ideas to build yourself, see full-stack and software projects and final-year project ideas.
Specs, boilerplates and examples
realworld-apps/realworld
IntermediateLanguage-agnostic spec (API spec docs and an E2E test suite)
WhatThe RealWorld spec repo ('the mother of all demo apps'): one Medium.com-clone defined by a shared API spec (specs/api), a shared end-to-end test suite (specs/e2e) and a shared CSS theme, with 100+ community implementations indexed on CodebaseShow.
LearnWhat a realistic full-stack feature set is (auth, CRUD, favourites, follows, pagination, tags), how to design to an API contract, and how to compare the same app across frameworks.
Try thisImplement the backend spec in your own stack (for example Express + MongoDB or Django REST Framework), run the shared E2E suite against it, then plug in an existing React or Vue RealWorld frontend.
Check firstMIT licence, about 84,000 stars, last push 2026-11-02. The repo moved from gothinkster/realworld to the realworld-apps organisation (the old URL redirects) and recently picked up new maintainers. Implementations vary in quality and age.
sahat/hackathon-starter
IntermediateNode.js LTS 24, Express, MongoDB/Mongoose, Bootstrap 5.3, server-rendered views
WhatA long-running Node.js/Express boilerplate with MongoDB (Mongoose), local and OAuth sign-in, dozens of third-party API example pages, Bootstrap 5 views, tests and ESLint.
LearnA large, conventional Express codebase: routing, controllers, Mongoose models, Passport-style auth flows, config and test layout.
Try thisAdd a new API-integration page that calls a free public API, saves results in a Mongoose model, and add role-based access plus supertest coverage for the new route.
Check firstMIT licence, about 35,000 stars, last push 2026-11-02. Server-rendered, not a React app. Many integrations need third-party API keys (free tiers mostly).

How to study a repository
- Read the README and run the project exactly as written before you change anything.
- Open the folder tree and write one sentence for what each folder does.
- Find the entry point and trace one feature from the screen or command to the data.
- Run the tests, then break something on purpose and watch a test fail.
- Make the change in the Try this line, commit it and write what you learned in your own README.
Licences in one minute
- MIT, BSD and Apache-2.0 let you reuse the code, including in a portfolio, if you keep the notice.
- GPL is copyleft: software you build from it must also be released under the GPL.
- CC0 is a public-domain dedication.
- A repository with no licence is all rights reserved, so link to it but do not copy it.
- Never commit API keys. Use test keys and environment variables.
Keys, accounts and payments
- Use free tiers or test mode for every service. Razorpay has a test mode, and Supabase, MongoDB Atlas and Firebase have free plans with limits.
- Never commit keys. Put them in environment variables and add the file to .gitignore.
- Before deploying, run the security checklist and the free hosting options.
Frequently asked questions
Where can I find full stack projects with source code?
On GitHub, in maintained repositories with a licence. The list above covers the RealWorld spec, MERN and Django examples, Next.js apps and Spring Boot services, each checked on 4 November 2026.
Which full-stack project is best for beginners?
The MongoDB MERN example is small and easy to follow, MDN's Django LocalLibrary app comes with a written tutorial, and Spring's REST service guide is the shortest Java start.
Can I use these projects for my final-year project?
Use them to learn and as a base, then add your own feature, tests and report, and cite the source. Check your college's rules on reusing open-source code.
What is the RealWorld project?
A shared specification for a Medium.com-style app with an API spec and end-to-end tests, implemented by over a hundred frontends and backends, so you can compare frameworks.
Do I need to pay for any of these?
No, the code is free. Some projects need a free account or API key, for example MongoDB Atlas, Firebase or a payment gateway in test mode.
