Generative AI skills for data analysts that job postings now ask for

Generative AI skills for data analysts: 40% of Indian analytics postings referenced AI in January 2026. The skills hiring data names, and what comes first.

AI skills for analysts

Indeed data shows 40% of data and analytics postings in India referenced AI in January 2026, against 29% for software development, as covered by IANS in March 2026. The AI skills that surface in India's 2026 hiring and rising-skills reports are prompt engineering, workflow automation and API integration, and they sit on top of the Python and SQL base that early-career postings still list first.

How many data analyst postings now mention AI?

Indeed's India data, reported by Storyboard18 on 16 October 2025, showed 11.7% of Indian job postings explicitly mentioning AI in September 2025, up from 8.2% a year earlier. Almost 39% of data and analytics roles mentioned AI, against 23% of software development postings. By January 2026 the analytics share was 40% and software development 29%, in an Indeed India report covered by IANS on 10 March 2026.

Across all postings, the same report puts AI mentions at about 14% in January 2026, up from 12.8% three months earlier, with 55% of occupational categories now referencing AI against 36% a year before. NASSCOM's May 2026 report with Indeed adds that only Singapore shows a higher share of AI-mentioning postings than India, and that India's share has risen consistently since 2023.

Two cautions apply. Indeed's India postings skew towards tech roles, so these are not all-economy figures. A mention is also a loose measure: the numbers do not say whether a posting expects a candidate to use AI tools, build AI products or simply be familiar with them. Whether the job itself survives is a separate question, taken up in will AI replace data analysts.

Which AI skills are on India's rising-skills lists?

LinkedIn's Skills on the Rise 2026 for India, as reported by Storyboard18 on 24 February 2026, names prompt engineering, workflow automation, LLMOps (running and monitoring large language model applications), AutoML and API integration among the top rising skills nationally. LinkedIn compared 1 December 2024 to 30 November 2025 with the same period a year earlier, using skill acquisition (skills added to member profiles) and hiring success. Its data and analytics cluster covers querying, database optimisation, data storytelling and data-driven decision-making.

CXOToday's coverage of the NASSCOM and Indeed report, dated 21 May 2026, lists the top skills across industries as cloud and infrastructure integration, generative AI and LLMs including prompt engineering, MLOps and deployment, and data analytics and visualisation. For tech AI roles it lists AI, Python, machine learning, Azure and TensorFlow. The article does not rank either list by volume.

foundit's 2025 annual report gives shares for AI-tagged postings only. Machine learning appeared in 34% of them (up 29% on the year), generative AI and LLMs in 22% (up 58%), data science and advanced analytics in 18% (up 24%) and MLOps and model deployment in 10% (up 42%). None of these is a share of all analyst postings.

What do employers mean by prompt engineering and workflow automation?

The surveys name these skills without defining them, so the descriptions below are of analyst work, not quotations.

Prompt engineering, in an analyst's week, means writing instructions that get an AI tool to produce a query, a cleaning step or a summary that can be checked. AI-assisted SQL applies the same idea to querying. No survey above counts it as a separate skill, so it is best read as querying plus prompting, with the checking left to the analyst.

Workflow automation and API integration cover the step after analysis: refreshing a report on a schedule, pulling data from a service, sending the result on. Agents extend that into multi-step flows. NASSCOM's October 2026 agentic AI survey found 71% of enterprises saying they need AI/ML and agent engineering capabilities and 67% seeking data engineering skills, while 78% confined agents to structured tasks. Those figures suggest the kind of workflow an analyst could be asked to design and supervise.

What should a learner focus on first when postings list so many tools?

Start with the base. foundit's December 2025 Hiring Snapshot ranks Python (22% on foundit's own share measure) and SQL and databases (18%) at the top of its table of skills for 0 to 3 years of experience, with Java (16%), cloud (12%) and data analysis (10%) below them. A posting can list a team's whole stack, so a long list is not a study plan.

foundit's 2025 AI hiring analysis found entry-level roles (0 to 3 years) made up 18% of AI jobs and grew 28% on the year, with hiring focused on foundational skills such as Python, SQL and ML basics. Entry-level roles are therefore a minority of AI hiring, and what they ask for is the same base.

How scarce AI skill is depends on who is counted. TeamLease Digital's Digital Skills and Salary Primer FY2026-27, built on 37,000 tech and digital roles across 18 cities, says only 16% of IT professionals in India hold AI skills. NASSCOM's AI-Native Talent Index 2026, which covers early-career technology workers, found over 90% AI-native or AI-proficient and scored the group 62. The two measure different groups with different definitions, so neither settles the question, and NASSCOM adds that technical depth, mentorship and independent judgment remain essential.

Does an AI skill premium show up in data analyst pay?

The analyst pay figures below are role averages, not split by AI skill. Indeed India shows an average base salary of Rs 6,25,285 a year for a data analyst, based on 526 salaries taken from postings over 36 months and last updated on 19 October 2026, across all experience levels. AmbitionBox's 2026 data, drawn from 1.5 lakh employee-reported salaries, averages Rs 6.8 lakh and rises from Rs 4.3 lakh at 0 to 1 year of experience to Rs 7.6 lakh at 3 to 6 years.

The one source here that points to a premium is a HAN Digital outlook, reported by CXOToday on 28 October 2026. It estimates that AI/ML engineers with AI-ready skills could command fresher salaries of Rs 8 to 22 lakh a year against Rs 6 to 12 lakh without them, and says a similar premium appears in data science and data analytics roles without giving ranges.

That is a single staffing-industry estimate with no stated sample or method, and its ranges describe AI/ML engineers, not analysts. All of these are market figures for the role, not what any learner will earn.

How should AI skills be shown in a portfolio and an interview?

Employer surveys point to demonstrable skill. In the NASSCOM and Indeed report, 40% of employers preferred demonstrable AI skills or certifications over a degree, and 50% cited skills mismatch as a hiring challenge. Work an employer can inspect is the most direct form of that evidence, and is a data analytics certification worth it looks at where a certificate fits alongside it. A few pieces cover most of what an analyst can show:

  • an analysis in which an AI tool drafted the SQL and the analyst's checks against the raw data are written up, including one place the draft was wrong
  • a prompt log showing how the instructions for a cleaning or summarising step were refined
  • a scheduled workflow that pulls data, runs a check and writes a result, with its failure handling described
  • a one-page note for a non-technical reader on what the numbers can and cannot support

Months of self-study can still falter in an interview when the work cannot be explained end to end. The safest preparation is to walk through one project in order: the question, the data, how the AI tool was used, how its output was checked and where it was wrong. The step-by-step route into the field is in how to start a career in data analytics with AI.

One structured way to build such work is the Certification Program in Data Analytics with AI and Gen AI, an online programme from E&ICT Academy, IIT Roorkee, run with Masai as the implementation partner. It has live sessions and an optional campus immersion, covers SQL, Python, Google Sheets, prompt engineering, LLM tools and agentic workflows with LangChain and CrewAI, and ends in a capstone project. Its modules include LLM Frameworks and Strategic Prompt Engineering, and Intelligence-Driven Wrangling and Visual Narratives.

Frequently asked questions

How many data analyst postings mention AI?

About 40% of data and analytics postings in India referenced AI in January 2026, against 29% for software development, in Indeed data covered by IANS in March 2026. The share was almost 39% in September 2025, as reported by Storyboard18. A mention does not show whether the role builds with AI or only uses it.

Which AI tools should a data analyst learn?

None of the surveys above ranks specific AI tools for analysts. LinkedIn's India list names prompt engineering, workflow automation, LLMOps, AutoML and API integration as rising skills, and NASSCOM and Indeed's skills analysis lists Python and machine learning in tech AI roles. Tool names change faster than skills, so the skills are the safer thing to learn.

Is prompt engineering a skill employers look for?

It is on the lists. LinkedIn's Skills on the Rise 2026 for India names prompt engineering among its top rising skills, and CXOToday's coverage of the NASSCOM and Indeed report places it within the generative AI and LLM skills in demand across industries. None of that data shows it replacing SQL or Python for analysts.

What should someone mid-learning focus on first?

Python and SQL, by foundit's measure. Its December 2025 Hiring Snapshot ranks Python (22% share) and SQL and databases (18%) first and second for 0 to 3 years of experience, and its 2025 AI report says entry-level AI hiring centred on Python, SQL and ML basics. AI skills then sit on top of that base rather than replacing it.

Do analysts with AI skills earn more?

One report says a premium exists but gives no analyst range. HAN Digital's IT-BPM Graduate Hiring Outlook 2027, reported by CXOToday on 28 October 2026, estimates AI-ready fresher AI/ML engineers at Rs 8 to 22 lakh against Rs 6 to 12 lakh without, and says a similar premium appears in analytics roles. It is a single estimate with no stated method.
