Data science jobs for freshers in India, and who really gets hired

Data science jobs for freshers in India: foundit put 0-3 year roles at 18% of AI postings in 2025, yet its June 2026 tracker showed that band down 6%.

Fresher data science jobs

Data science jobs for freshers in India exist, but the entry segment is competitive and uneven. foundit found that roles asking for 0-3 years of experience made up 18% of AI job postings in 2025 and grew 28% year on year. Its June 2026 tracker, however, showed demand for that band down 6% as companies pulled back on bulk graduate intake.

Do freshers really get hired as data scientists, or is it mostly a myth?

It is not a myth, and it is not easy. foundit's annual report for 2025 describes entry-level AI hiring as focused on foundational skills such as Python, SQL and ML basics, and Naukri's May 2026 JobSpeak recorded fresher hiring up 7% in a month when AI/ML roles grew 22%.

One limit applies to every figure here: the trackers report postings and hiring by experience band, not by job title. They show that employers hire at 0-3 years in AI-tagged roles, and they do not say how many of those roles are titled data scientist. foundit's mid-2026 snapshot lists data scientists in GCC manufacturing (+28%) beside AI/ML engineers (+30%) and data analysts or BI developers (+26%) in GCC banking and financial services, so a fresher's search is better organised around skills than around one title.

Employers also describe a supply problem. In the NASSCOM and Indeed report of 19 May 2026, 58% of employers say too few skilled applicants come forward and 50% cite skills mismatch. Graduates from branches other than computer science face the same bands from a different starting point, which a separate piece on switching from mechanical engineering works through.

Is data scientist a dying career for freshers in India?

The experience-band data points to a selective market, not a closing one. foundit's June 2026 tracker shows demand for 0-3 years at -6%, which it links to companies pulling back on bulk graduate intake after an unusually strong cycle the year before. The 4-6 years band fell 10%, and 7-10 years, at +6%, was the only band growing.

Naukri's September 2026 JobSpeak shows a similar tilt towards experience inside the IT sector. AI/ML hiring there rose 54% for 13-16 years of experience and 28% for 8-12 years, while fresher AI/ML hiring rose 19% and the 4-7 years band was stable. Naukri notes that AI/ML demand is higher among experienced professionals. Growth rates by band sit on small bases, so they show direction and not openings.

The table sets the two trackers' experience-band readings side by side, with the month and measure for each.

Why does fresher demand swing from month to month, and what does it mean for timing?

Single months move a lot. Naukri's overall hiring index rose 12% year on year in February 2026 and 14% in August, against 2% in September. AI/ML roles grew 49% in February, 22% in May, 31% in August and 20% in September, and Naukri itself says August was flattered by festive-season timing.

The trackers also disagree because they measure different things. Naukri's May 2026 reading had fresher hiring up 7%, while foundit's June 2026 view had demand for 0-3 years at -6%. A graduate who plans around one release is betting on one reading, and the steadier approach is to build skills and apply across the year while judging the market on several months from more than one tracker.

What entry routes exist for freshers, and where do GCCs fit?

Campus hiring is shaped by what employers now expect. The NASSCOM-Deloitte 2025 compensation survey says the technical proficiency of campus hires has shifted over the last three years from basic coding and cloud fundamentals to advanced data analytics, AI/ML and DevOps. NASSCOM's 2026 AI-Native Talent Index finds over 90% of early-career technology talent is AI-native or AI-proficient, so familiarity with AI tools is common among peers, and NASSCOM says technical depth still matters.

Global capability centres (GCCs), the India-based units multinational companies run for engineering and analytics work, are the other route to track. foundit tracks GCC jobs up 11% year on year between June 2025 and June 2026, with Tier-2 and emerging cities growing 23%.

Naukri's September 2026 reading was GCC hiring up 4%, led by Hyderabad (+23%), Chennai (+13%), Pune (+11%) and Bengaluru (+3%). The GCC growth figures cover all experience bands, so they show where hiring is rather than how many openings are for freshers.

Internships are the other common entry route, and the blog's guide to summer data science courses and internships covers the options.

Which skills do freshers need, and what do AI-ready skills change about pay?

For early-career roles, foundit's December 2025 Hiring Snapshot lists Python (22% share), SQL and databases (18%), Java (16%), cloud (12%) and data analysis (10%) as the top skills for 0-3 years of experience. The percentages are foundit's measure of each skill's share among tracked skills for that band, not the share of all jobs asking for Python.

Across AI postings generally, foundit's 2025 data has machine learning in 34%, generative AI and LLMs in 22% and MLOps and model deployment in 10%, which shows where the next layer sits after the basics. The comparison of data scientist and AI engineer roles goes through that split.

Pay data for freshers is thin. Indeed India's average base salary for data scientists is Rs 11,97,456 a year (301 salaries, updated 15 October 2026), but it covers every experience level and is not a fresher figure. AmbitionBox's 2026 employee-reported data puts data scientists with 1-3 years of experience at Rs 11.9 lakh a year.

A HAN Digital outlook, reported by CXOToday on 28 October 2026, estimates that AI/ML engineers with AI-ready skills could command fresher salaries of Rs 8-22 lakh a year against Rs 6-12 lakh without them, and says a similar premium appears in data science and analytics roles without giving ranges.

It is an estimate from one staffing-industry report with no sample or method stated, and it concerns AI/ML engineers, so it points to a skills premium and is not a fresher data scientist salary. None of these figures promises an offer.

What would a realistic 12-month plan look like for a 2026 graduate?

The plan below is a hypothetical sequence built from the skills lists above. It forecasts no outcome.

  1. Months 1-3: Python and SQL at working level, with querying, joins and window functions practised on real tables.
  2. Months 4-6: statistics for data work, then machine learning basics (regression, classification, tree-based models) with evaluation done properly.
  3. Months 7-9: finished projects on real data with a short write-up, one served through a simple API (the blog's list of 25 data science projects for students has ideas).
  4. Months 10-12: one layer from the AI postings list, such as generative AI or MLOps basics, while applying steadily and revising projects.

For graduates who prefer a structured route, Certification in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence is an online programme from E&ICT Academy, IIT Roorkee, run with Masai as the implementation partner, with live online sessions and an optional campus immersion at IIT Roorkee. It covers Python, data analysis, SQL, statistics, machine learning and generative AI, and its modules include Maths & Statistics for Data Science (Applied) and a capstone project (Build & Evaluate).

Frequently asked questions

What is the salary of a data scientist fresher in India?

Indeed India's average of Rs 11,97,456 a year covers all experience levels, so it is not a fresher figure. AmbitionBox's 2026 data shows Rs 11.9 lakh at 1-3 years of experience. A HAN Digital outlook, reported by CXOToday, estimates AI-ready fresher AI/ML engineers at Rs 8-22 lakh a year, as market data and not a promise.

How to become a data scientist after 12th?

Degrees still count with many employers. In the NASSCOM and Indeed survey, 40% prefer demonstrable AI skills or certifications over a degree, while CXOToday reports that 32% weigh skills, certifications and degrees equally. After 12th, that means building skills alongside a degree. foundit's early-career postings centre on Python, SQL and ML basics, so those come first.

Are data analyst jobs easier to get than data scientist jobs for freshers?

Entry demand is reported by experience band rather than job title, so analyst roles are not shown to be easier to land. foundit's top skills for 0-3 years include SQL and databases (18%) and data analysis (10%), and its mid-2026 snapshot lists data analysts and BI developers among trending GCC banking and financial services roles (+26%).

When is the best time to apply for fresher data science jobs?

Demand swings month to month. Naukri's 2026 readings for AI/ML roles swung between 20% and 49% across the months quoted, and Naukri says August was flattered by festive-season timing. Applying steadily through the year, while skills and projects improve, avoids betting on a single reading.

Which skills should a fresher learn first for data science?

foundit's December 2025 snapshot puts Python at 22% share and SQL and databases at 18% for 0-3 years of experience, ahead of Java, cloud and data analysis. Its annual report says entry-level AI hiring focuses on Python, SQL and ML basics, so machine learning fundamentals come next once the first two are working.
