What is a forward deployed engineer and what does the job involve
What is a forward deployed engineer? DevRev's Delhi NCR posting puts the job at 80% customer-facing and 70 to 80% hands-on coding, with travel up to 80%.
A forward deployed engineer (FDE) is a software engineer who works inside a customer's own environment, building and running a vendor's technology there instead of at headquarters. Palantir, which says it pioneered the position, describes embedding engineers directly with customers. DevRev's Delhi NCR posting, updated 9 October 2026, describes its version as 80% customer-facing and 70 to 80% hands-on coding and integration.
What does a forward deployed engineer do?
The company sells a product or a platform. The customer has untidy data, older systems and a business problem that the product only partly fits. The FDE is the engineer who sits with that customer, works out what is actually needed and builds the working solution inside the customer's systems.
OpenAI's San Francisco posting of 11 September 2026 says FDEs lead end-to-end deployments of frontier models in production, owning discovery, technical scoping, system design, build and rollout, with success measured through production adoption.
Cursor's India posting, published on 28 September 2026, is more specific about tasks. FDEs lead discovery with customer engineers, build workflows for large-scale refactors, migrations and pull-request review loops, and own production quality: tracing, evals, metrics and the trade-offs between latency and cost. Anthropic's London posting, updated 14 September 2026, names MCP servers, sub-agents and agent skills as the things an FDE delivers for production workflows.
Discovery comes first: OpenAI puts discovery and technical scoping at the start of the job. Building follows, and DevRev's FDEs build AI agents, integrations and automations in TypeScript, JavaScript or Python, apply prompt engineering and semantic search tuning, and write SQL. Databricks says its FDEs build and productionise customer solutions and are billable, and Salesforce, on 18 March 2026, said its FDEs code, consult and translate agentic AI into working solutions, often sitting side by side with the customer.
Where did the role come from, and why are AI companies hiring for it again?
Palantir's own Forward Deployed Software Engineer posting says the company pioneered the position, embedding engineers directly with customers to work on their most pressing problems. Its careers listing files the role under a team named Delta.
Andreessen Horowitz partner Joe Schmidt wrote on 4 June 2025 that FDEs are a professional-services role at AI companies, with work that includes securely connecting the AI application to internal databases, APIs and workflows. He noted that the title overlaps with implementation and solutions specialists, and that 22 of OpenAI's 311 open roles at that time sat in FDE and solutions-engineer categories. That is an investor's view, not a hiring statistic.
Posting counts have risen sharply, though the figures depend on who counts and when. Bloomberry, analysing about 1,000 postings supplied by the jobs-data provider Revealera, found that postings with the title "forward deployed engineer" grew 1,165% year over year when January to October 2025 was compared with the same months of 2024. Salesforce's newsroom reported on 18 March 2026 that it tripled its own FDE team in six months. In India, Indeed reported, as relayed by IANS on 14 October 2026, that FDE postings grew nearly 19-fold between June 2025 and June 2026.
None of these is a count of jobs filled, so the base may be small. Paraform, a recruiting marketplace, reported 350% growth on its own platform between the first quarter of 2025 and the first quarter of 2026, which shows how much the percentage moves with the data source and the period.
How much of the job is customer-facing, and is it a sales role?
Employers answer this differently. The table sets out what six named postings say about the split, travel and the experience asked, using each posting's own wording and date.
| Employer and posting | What the posting stresses | Travel | Experience asked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Palantir, Forward Deployed Software Engineer (Seoul listing) | Working side by side with customers on business-critical data and AI | 25 to 50% preferred | Strong engineering background |
| DevRev, FDE, Delhi NCR (updated 9 October 2026) | 80% customer-facing, 70 to 80% hands-on coding and integration | Up to 80% | 5+ years |
| Databricks, Senior FDE, Bengaluru (updated 6 October 2026) | Build and productionise customer solutions, billable | About 20% | 6+ years |
| Cursor, FDE India (posted 28 September 2026) | Lead discovery, build workflows, own production quality | No figure given | No minimum listed |
| Anthropic, FDE, London (updated 14 September 2026) | Embed with strategic customers, build production applications | 25 to 50% | 4+ years |
| OpenAI, FDE, San Francisco (11 September 2026) | Lead deployments from discovery to rollout | Up to 50% | 5+ years |
The DevRev percentages describe that one role and should not be read as an industry norm. They do show the shape: a job in which most hours involve a customer and most hours also involve code.
It is an engineering role with a customer attached, but the title is used loosely. HackerRank's Bengaluru posting, updated 14 October 2026, asks for a customer-facing technical lead who works onsite, runs pilots and demos, and writes API scripts in Ruby or Python. MongoDB's Gurugram posting asks for 5+ years of backend engineering and production code written inside an independent software vendor partner's codebase. Those are two different jobs under one name, so the job description matters more than the title.
Which titles mean the same work in India?
Employers rarely use one name. The India postings listed on company careers pages on 30 October 2026 include these titles:
- Forward Deployed Engineer: Cursor (Bengaluru, New Delhi and Mumbai), DevRev (Delhi NCR, Mumbai and Chennai), HackerRank (Bengaluru) and MongoDB (Gurugram).
- Senior, Staff and manager-level Forward Deployed Engineer roles at Databricks, five in India, among its 112 FDE-titled roles out of 905 openings.
- Forward Deployed Architect and Forward Deployed Strategist titles at DevRev.
- Deployment Strategist at Sarvam AI (Bengaluru) and Deployment Strategist Lead for India at ElevenLabs.
A common misreading is that the AI labs hire FDEs in India. Their careers pages on 30 October 2026 list OpenAI with 32 of 813 roles carrying an FDE title and none in India, Anthropic with 7 of 673 and none in India, and Palantir with 73 of 302 and no India location. OpenAI and Anthropic list Applied AI Architect roles in India instead, which are a different job with a different experience bar.
Recruiters are also searching under other names. Naukri's AI at Work report, summarised on 16 July 2026, said recruiters increasingly search for AI Solution Architect, AI Automation Engineer and Agent Builder profiles, among other titles. The FDE title alone will miss some of this work.
Which skills are worth learning right now for this work?
Python is the constant. In Bloomberry's analysis of about 1,000 postings, mostly from the United States and from late 2025, Python appeared in 66%, TypeScript in 35%, AWS in 32%, GCP in 22% and Azure in 18%. Among AI skills, AI agents appeared in 35% and LLM experience in 31%, while RAG appeared in 12%. These shares overlap, so they cannot be added together.
Indeed's India report, relayed by IANS on 14 October 2026, lists Python or Java, data engineering, machine learning, generative AI, retrieval-augmented generation, AI agents, cloud technologies, APIs, integrations and full-stack development. Anyone who wants the background on two of the AI items can read the earlier explainers on what a Claude AI agent is and on retrieval-augmented generation.
The customer side of the list is shorter: Cursor and OpenAI name discovery, and HackerRank names pilots and demos. HackerRank treats solutions or sales engineering experience as a plus; the other postings ask for engineering experience.
Who does the role suit, and how do new engineers get in?
Cursor's India posting says FDEs own production quality, listing tracing, evals, metrics and the trade-offs between latency and cost.
Sarvam's Agent Engineer posting of 20 August 2026 asks for 3+ years of experience, and it says that having shipped and run something real users depended on matters more than the number of years. That helps newer engineers, though it still assumes a first stretch of ordinary engineering. Bloomberry's data points the same way. Among postings that stated experience, 3 to 5 years was the most common band at 60%, with 0 to 2 years at 12%.
Travel is part of the trade-off, and DevRev's posting allows up to 80%. Salesforce adds a second route. Its newsroom said that about 40% to 50% of FDE movement at the company is internal. The postings in the table that state a minimum ask for 4 to 6+ years, and Palantir's new-graduate and internship FDE roles had no India location on its careers page on 30 October 2026. The question of how to reach the role early in a career gets a fuller treatment in the post on how to become a forward deployed engineer.
Cities and employers hiring in India are covered in the post on forward deployed engineer jobs in India. On pay, the India figure comes from posted salaries. The Indeed India report, relayed by IANS on 14 October 2026, said average base pay of approximately Rs 12 lakh a year can be expected for FDE roles in India, within a base-pay range of Rs 9 lakh to Rs 16 lakh. US lab postings are quoted in dollars and carry 5+ year bars: OpenAI's San Francisco posting lists $185K to $300K plus equity.
Where does a structured programme fit?
A taught route is the Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) Cohort. It is a Leap by Masai programme for engineers with hands-on technical experience, run as an in-person start, an online build phase and an in-person hackathon for qualifying participants, covering production Python, APIs, cloud deployment, LLMs, retrieval, agents, security and client engagement. Its eligibility reads: engineers with at least 1 year of hands-on technical experience and comfort writing code.
Frequently asked questions
What is the full form of FDE in software?
FDE stands for forward deployed engineer. Palantir uses the longer title Forward Deployed Software Engineer, shortened to FDSE, for the same family of work. Other employers add words such as Architect, Strategist or Deployment to the name, so a job search for the single acronym will miss part of the market.
Is a forward deployed engineer a software engineer?
Yes, with a different centre of gravity. DevRev's Delhi NCR posting, updated 9 October 2026, puts hands-on coding and integration at 70 to 80% of the role and customer-facing work at 80%, so the job remains code-heavy even though most hours also involve a customer. Titles and splits vary by employer.
Do forward deployed engineers travel?
Often, but the amount varies by employer. Databricks' Bengaluru posting says about 20% of the time, Anthropic's London posting says 25 to 50%, OpenAI's San Francisco posting says up to 50%, and DevRev's Delhi NCR posting says up to 80%. A candidate should check the travel line of each description before applying.
Can a fresher become a forward deployed engineer?
Directly, rarely in India. Among postings that stated experience, Bloomberry found 0 to 2 years in 12% of them. Palantir lists new-graduate FDE roles, but none located in India on its careers page on 30 October 2026. Most freshers will need a first role in software, data or solutions engineering before FDE postings become realistic.
Is forward deployed engineer a good career?
Interest is clearly rising, but the role is demanding. Indeed reported, as relayed by IANS on 14 October 2026, nearly 19-fold growth in India postings between June 2025 and June 2026, so the base may be small. The job is also demanding, with customer contact, travel and responsibility for systems in production.
