What does a chief AI officer do, and who gets the job in India

What does a chief AI officer do? IBM's 2026 CEO study found 76% of surveyed organisations have one, up from 26%. Duties and backgrounds, with India limits.

The chief AI officer job

A chief AI officer owns how an organisation adopts AI and governs its use, and the title is spreading: IBM's 2026 study of 2,000 CEOs and senior leaders found 76% of surveyed organisations had one, up from 26% in 2025. That sample is global. For India, the figures cover hiring intentions and recruiter searches, not vacancies or pay.

What does a chief AI officer do?

The title is new enough that duties differ by employer, so live job descriptions are the best evidence. A Databricks posting in the United States for an AI Transformation Leader, updated on 21 September 2026, describes advising the non-technical C-suite and functional leaders such as the CFO and CMO on AI transformation roadmaps. The role partners with the company's forward deployed engineering team and asks for at least 15 years of experience.

A second US Databricks posting, for a Director, Marketing Strategy and AI Transformation (updated 6 October 2026), asks the post-holder to drive agent adoption across a global marketing organisation and to set standards for prompts, context and agent workflows. It also asks for AI governance and adoption guardrails covering quality, risk, data privacy and responsible use. Both postings are for US roles, neither is Indian and neither uses the chief AI officer title. The duties below therefore come from US postings. They show what AI leadership work looks like when an employer writes it down: advice, standards and guardrails more than model building.

IBM's study points the same way. It found 83% of CEOs say AI success depends more on people's adoption than on technology, and 85% say all functional leaders must become technology experts in their domain. Another finding is that 64% of surveyed CEOs are comfortable making major strategic decisions based on AI-generated input. Read together, the findings describe a job that is mostly about getting people to use AI well, and only partly about the technology.

How is a chief AI officer different from a CTO, CIO or chief data officer?

A CTO or CIO is usually accountable for technology and systems, and a chief data officer for data. In the Databricks postings, the AI role sits beside engineering: the AI Transformation Leader partners with a forward deployed engineering team and advises business leaders, rather than running the platform.

One practical check for a candidate in an interview covers the budget the role controls, the data it can access and who holds the final decision on deploying an AI system.

How common is the role, and which AI titles are employers adding?

IBM's 76% is for the organisations in its sample, which are large and global. It does not imply Indian vacancies. The change from 26% in 2025 is IBM's reported result for its own sample, not an Indian count of chief AI officer jobs.

Microsoft's 2025 Work Trend Index, from April 2025, shows what managers say they are considering. It found 28% of managers considering hiring AI workforce managers to lead teams of people and agents, and 32% planning to hire AI agent specialists within 12 to 18 months. In its India findings, 92% of leaders said their company is considering adding AI-specific roles, with names such as Agent Boss and AI Workflow Designer. These are Microsoft's coined labels, and "considering" is an intention.

Naukri's AI at Work report of 16 July 2026 gives the Indian recruiter view: searches increasingly look for people who can build, deploy and manage AI, with growing searches for AI Product Manager, AI Solution Architect, AI Automation Engineer, AI Platform Engineer, Agent Builder and AI Trainer. A broader map of AI job families is in artificial intelligence, every role explained.

The table collects the titles and the evidence behind each, with its limit.

Who gets hired, and can a developer turned product manager move into AI leadership?

The senior end of the market is where AI hiring is growing fastest. Naukri's AI at Work report found AI hiring growth strongest in senior bands, with 13-16 years of experience up 39% and 16+ years up 35% year on year. Naukri's JobSpeak for September 2026 put AI/ML hiring growth within the IT sector at 54% for 13 to 16 years of experience, 28% for 8 to 12 years and 19% for freshers. These cover AI and ML hiring within the IT sector, not leadership jobs alone.

The skills employers name are broad. The World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025 says analytical thinking remains the most sought-after core skill, with seven out of 10 companies considering it essential in 2025. It lists leadership and social influence, talent management and analytical thinking among the top 10 skills on the rise to 2030.

Consider a hypothetical product manager with more than 15 years of experience, who began as a developer and has run cross-functional programmes. The postings above suggest what transfers: working with engineers, advising business leaders, setting standards and judging risk. What often needs adding is fluency in generative and agentic AI, in vendor evaluation and in measuring value and risk. A certificate does not replace a record of delivering AI work in a real team, so a first pilot inside the current employer is one way to show the work. How to lead an AI pilot as a non-technical manager covers that route, and what product managers can build with AI on their own shows how far a prototype can go.

How much does a chief AI officer earn in India?

Two pieces of market data are relevant, and neither is a salary. PIB's backgrounder of 12 February 2026, citing the World Bank, says jobs requiring digital skills offer an average 12% wage premium while AI-focused roles command a 28% premium. That is a premium over comparable roles. Naukri's July 2026 report adds that AI roles saw stronger salary growth than non-AI roles over the last four years. That describes AI roles in general and not what any AI leader earns.

Where a taught programme fits

Some leaders prefer a taught sequence to on-the-job learning. The AI Officer Programme is a live online programme by Vishlesan i-Hub Foundation, IIT Patna, delivered with Masai, for working managers and senior professionals, covering generative AI, agentic AI, AI governance and responsible AI without requiring coding. Its modules include Responsible AI, Governance and AI Business Models. The eligibility is minimum 1 year of full-time work experience, currently working in an organisation, and no coding background required. It grants no IIT Patna degree, credit or alumni status.

Frequently asked questions

What is a chief AI officer (CAIO)?

A chief AI officer is the senior executive responsible for an organisation's AI strategy, adoption and governance. IBM's 2026 CEO study, published on 4 May 2026, found 76% of surveyed organisations had one, up from 26% in 2025. Duties vary, and live postings emphasise advising executives, setting standards and building guardrails.

How much does a chief AI officer earn in India?

The World Bank, as quoted by PIB on 12 February 2026, says AI-focused roles command a 28% wage premium over comparable roles, against 12% for digital-skills roles. That is a premium, not a salary.

Does a chief AI officer need to code?

Live postings stress planning, workflow redesign, standards and governance rather than coding. The US Databricks AI Transformation Leader role advises the CFO and CMO and partners with engineers. IBM's 2026 study found 85% of respondents say all functional leaders must become technology experts in their domain, which means understanding AI well enough to question it.

Are there chief AI officer jobs in India?

The evidence is indirect. Microsoft's India findings say 92% of leaders are considering AI-specific roles, and Naukri reports growing recruiter searches for titles such as AI Product Manager and AI Trainer. IBM's 76% is a global figure, so it does not count Indian chief AI officer vacancies.

How many years of experience do AI leadership roles ask for?

The US Databricks AI Transformation Leader posting of September 2026 asks for at least 15 years. Naukri's September 2026 JobSpeak shows AI/ML hiring within the IT sector growing 54% for 13 to 16 years of experience.
