Software engineer to machine learning engineer, how the switch works

Software engineer to machine learning engineer in India: Naukri's September 2026 JobSpeak had AI and ML hiring up 11% inside IT while IT hiring fell 4%.

Software engineer to ML engineer

Software engineers move into machine learning engineering by building on skills that postings already ask for. Sarvam's Agent Engineer role, posted on 20 August 2026, wants 3+ years of experience and strong Python across backend, data pipelines, APIs and cloud. Rubrik's Senior Applied AI Engineer role asks for 8+ years of software engineering plus 1 to 2 years of shipping AI-agent features.

Why are software engineers looking at ML roles in 2026?

The pull comes from a split inside the IT market. Naukri's JobSpeak for September 2026 recorded IT and software services hiring down 4% year on year. Within the IT sector, though, AI and ML hiring grew 11%, and across all sectors it grew 20% against 2% for white-collar hiring overall.

The same release shows who is being hired. Naukri found AI and ML hiring up 54% for 13 to 16 years of experience and 28% for 8 to 12 years, while fresher AI and ML hiring grew 19%. Naukri's AI at Work report, summarised in July 2026, put growth at 39% for 13 to 16 years and 35% for 16 or more years. These are growth rates on top of different bases, so they say that experienced engineers are in demand for AI work and not that the roles are plentiful.

AI is also entering ordinary engineering jobs. Indeed Hiring Lab found AI mentioned in 23% of software development postings on Indeed India in September 2025, against 39% of data and analytics postings. TeamLease Digital's FY2026-27 primer says only 16% of IT professionals in India hold AI skills, so an engineer who adds them is in a minority. Indeed notes that its India data skews towards tech, management and sales.

Naukri's survey found 77% of professionals using AI at work at least sometimes, with 79% upskilling or planning to, while only 35% said their employer actively provides AI training. Naukri's survey covers professionals using AI at work in general, so it shows employer training is uncommon but does not describe engineers who switch.

Should a backend or systems developer switch to AI and ML, and what transfers?

The postings answer this by listing what they want. Much of it is engineering that a working developer already has. Sarvam's Agent Engineer role asks for strong Python with range across backend, data pipelines, APIs and cloud. Rubrik asks for REST APIs, distributed systems and reliability practices, plus React or Next.js. Observe.AI's AI Agent Engineer role in Hyderabad, dated 23 September 2026, lists API integrations and workflow configuration.

None of those is an ML skill in the narrow sense. They are the parts of the job where a developer with a few years behind them starts ahead of a graduate, and they are why employers of applied roles are asking for engineering depth.

What does not transfer is the model-facing half. The same postings ask for LLM and agent work such as context engineering, tool use, structured outputs and memory, and for evaluation: Sarvam wants evals that separate signal from noise and Observe.AI lists evaluation frameworks. For earlier-career ML roles, foundit says entry postings focus on Python, SQL and ML basics. An engineer who has never measured a model's quality has the largest gap here.

A switch is not necessary for every backend developer. Sarvam's Agent Engineer role says what matters more than years is having shipped and run something real users depended on, and that applies to production services as much as to models. A systems developer working in Rust, C++ or Java who enjoys infrastructure may find that the ML infrastructure lane described below fits a current skill set better than the model-building lane. An earlier post on whether AI will replace software engineers in India covers the wider worry behind many such switches.

Which ML roles hire from engineering backgrounds, and what do they expect at 1 to 3 years and at 8 or more?

Experience bars in named postings run from 3 years upwards, which is the first thing a developer with 1 to 3 years should note. The table lines up the three roles that most resemble a switch destination for engineers.

PostingExperience barWhat the engineering background covers
Sarvam, Agent Engineer (Bengaluru, 20 August 2026)3+ yearsPython, backend, data pipelines, APIs, cloud
Rubrik, Senior Applied AI Engineer (Bangalore, updated 21 October 2026)8+ years of software engineering and 1 to 2 years shipping AI agentsREST APIs, distributed systems, reliability, React or Next.js
Sarvam, ML Engineer, Training Infra (Bengaluru, 7 October 2026)3+ years building ML training infrastructureBS or MS in computer science or equivalent demonstrated experience, GPU and CUDA, PyTorch internals

At the junior end, foundit's 2025 split of AI postings by experience put 0 to 3 years at 18% of the total, growing 28%. Most postings were for more experience: 28% for 4 to 6 years, 25% for 7 to 10 years, 17% for 11 to 15 years and 12% for 15 or more years. A developer at 1 to 3 years competes for the smallest slice, often alongside graduates, so a portfolio matters more than in the senior bands.

At 8 or more years the picture reverses. Rubrik's posting asks for the engineering seniority first and the AI-agent experience second, with 1 to 2 years of AI-agent work listed as the AI requirement. A senior engineer who has spent a year or two building an AI feature internally is close to the stated bar. The pillar post on machine learning engineer demand shows how the experience bands compare in the Naukri data.

Is classical ML, applied LLM work or ML infrastructure the right lane?

The three lanes ask for different mixes, and the postings make the split visible. Classical machine learning remains the largest block. foundit found Machine Learning in 34% of AI postings in 2025, growing 29%, and Naukri's April 2026 release named Machine Learning Engineer, Search Engineer, Data Scientist and Data Platform Engineer as the most in-demand AI and ML roles. This lane may suit developers who like working with data and metrics.

Applied LLM work is the fastest-growing, with generative AI and LLMs in 22% of foundit's 2025 AI postings and 58% growth. It is the lane closest to software engineering, since the job is to build products around a model. The post on GenAI engineer jobs in India lists what those roles ask for.

ML infrastructure is the narrowest. Sarvam's training-infrastructure role wants hands-on distributed training with Megatron-LM, DeepSpeed, FSDP or NeMo, and it is not a generalist or entry-level job. MLOps and model deployment appeared in 10% of foundit's AI postings and grew 42%, which makes the middle ground of deployment a lane in itself.

A reasonable reading is that backend and cloud engineers fit applied LLM work or deployment first, and engineers who like numbers and experimentation fit classical ML.

How can the switch happen inside the current company?

The postings point to a simple route. Rubrik's bar is 1 to 2 years of hands-on experience shipping AI-agent features, and Sarvam's is shipping and running something real. Both are things an engineer can do on their current team by proposing a small, scoped AI feature rather than waiting for a title change.

Naukri's survey figure of 35% of professionals saying their employer actively provides AI training suggests that most teams will not hand over the skills. An engineer who volunteers for the first AI-related ticket, such as evaluating a model or wrapping one in an API, gets the experience that postings later ask for. A manager's support helps, and a written record of what shipped, how it was measured and what failed becomes the evidence for the next role.

What is a realistic timeline, and what should be built first?

One sequence that fits the postings has three steps. First comes the data and modelling base: Python, SQL and ML basics, which foundit names for entry-level AI roles. Second is one model served behind an API, using the engineering skills already in hand. Third is an evaluation of that model, written up with its failures.

A hypothetical developer in Pune with three years of Java experience could build a classifier for support tickets, expose it through a REST endpoint and write down how it was tested. That project touches the Python, API and evaluation asks in the Sarvam and Observe.AI postings, and it is small enough to finish while employed.

Degrees may weigh less in some hiring. In the World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025, 30% of surveyed employers in India expect skills-based hiring, by removing degree requirements, to be effective for improving talent availability, against 19% globally. It is an expectation and not proof that degrees no longer count. A roadmap to becoming a machine learning engineer covers the learning order in more detail, and the post on entry-level machine learning jobs covers what junior roles ask for.

Where does a structured programme fit?

Some developers prefer a taught sequence to self-study. Certification in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning is an online programme from Vishlesan i-Hub, IIT Patna, delivered on Masai's online platform, that covers Python, machine learning, deep learning, generative AI and LLMs, agentic systems and deploying models to production. Its modules include core programming and analytical foundations and production deployment.

A certificate does not replace shipped work, and employers in the postings above ask for the latter.

Frequently asked questions

Can a software engineer become a machine learning engineer?

Yes, and the postings show the overlap. Sarvam's Agent Engineer role asks for strong Python across backend, data pipelines, APIs and cloud, and Rubrik wants 8+ years of software engineering. The gap is model-facing: evaluation, LLM and agent work, and ML basics. Experience bars start around 3 years in the named postings.

Which ML role suits a backend developer best?

Applied LLM or deployment roles fit backend skills first. foundit's 2025 data had generative AI and LLM skills in 22% of AI postings, growing 58%, and MLOps and model deployment in 10%, growing 42%. Classical machine learning, in 34% of postings, suits engineers who prefer modelling and metrics over services.

Do experienced engineers have an advantage in AI hiring?

On the growth numbers, yes. Naukri's September 2026 JobSpeak had AI and ML hiring up 54% for 13 to 16 years of experience and 28% for 8 to 12 years, against 19% for freshers. Growth rates reflect different bases, but Rubrik's posting also treats engineering seniority as the first requirement.

How can an engineer switch to ML inside the current company?

The postings suggest proposing a small AI feature, such as wrapping a model in an API or evaluating one, because Rubrik and Sarvam both ask for shipped, running work. Naukri found only 35% of professionals say their employer provides AI training, so initiative counts.

Is a master's degree needed to move into ML?

Not for applied engineering roles in the named postings. Sarvam's training-infrastructure role accepts a BS or MS in computer science or equivalent demonstrated experience, while its ML Researcher role asks for a PhD. The World Economic Forum found 30% of Indian employers expect skills-based hiring to help.
