How to switch from software engineer to business analyst in India
Software engineer to business analyst in India: Naukri put IT and software services hiring down 4% in September 2026 while AI and ML roles rose 20%.
A software engineer can move into business analysis by adding the skills IIBA's 2026 survey ranks first and second, communication and critical thinking, to the technical base already in place. Naukri's JobSpeak for September 2026 had IT and software services hiring down 4% year on year while AI and ML roles rose 20%, so a switch that adds data and AI skills points towards the faster-growing end.
Should a software engineer switch to being an analyst?
It depends on what the engineer wants to stop doing and what to start. Pay alone does not settle it. What the data does show is what the analyst role screens for.
IIBA's Global State of Business Analysis Report 2026, published on 25 June 2026 from 2,120 professionals in 122 countries, ranks communication first for the third year running and critical thinking second, with problem-solving, listening and stakeholder engagement completing the top five. Tools are not in that top five. The main change in a switch is therefore less hands-on building and more time spent with stakeholders, framing the question and explaining the answer.
That trade suits some engineers and not others. An engineer who likes the work of debugging a system and has little appetite for running requirement workshops may be happier moving towards data or AI engineering instead. The post on whether a business analyst needs coding covers how much technical depth analyst roles ask for.
What does 2026 hiring data say about IT services versus analytics roles?
IT hiring has swung through the year. Naukri's JobSpeak recorded the IT sector up 6% year on year in February 2026, down 7% in May and up 11% in August, then IT and software services down 4% in September. Naukri says August was flattered by festive-season timing. In the September release, AI and ML roles were up 20% while the overall hiring index grew 2%, from 3002 to 3053.
NASSCOM's Strategic Review 2026, published on 23 February 2026, expects direct tech sector employment of about 6 mn in FY26, up 2.3% for a net addition of 135,000, and expects FY27 hiring to shift from volume to skill mix. With slow headcount growth, the skill mix matters more than volume.
Analytics postings are among the most AI-heavy. Indeed's India report, as covered by IANS on 10 March 2026, found 40% of data and analytics postings referenced AI in January 2026, against 29% of software development postings. In the NASSCOM and Indeed report of 19 May 2026, 86% of employers had seen some impact of AI on job roles. TeamLease Digital estimates that only 16% of IT professionals in India hold AI skills, and that 39% of core digital skills will change by 2030.
Two cautions apply. These are sector and skill-family readings, not business analyst vacancy counts, and the swings from month to month are large. The wider picture is in the piece on where business analyst jobs are growing.
Which engineering skills transfer to business analysis, and which gaps need closing?
Some do. LinkedIn's Skills on the Rise 2026 for India, as reported by Storyboard18 on 24 February 2026, puts querying, database optimisation, data storytelling and data-driven decision-making in its data and analytics cluster. Its list of top national rising skills includes prompt engineering, workflow automation, LLMOps, AutoML and API integration. An engineer who has written queries, automated workflows or integrated APIs already holds some of the technical items.
The gaps are on the business side. Stakeholder engagement and listening sit in IIBA's top five, and data storytelling, the ability to turn a result into a decision, is in LinkedIn's data cluster. Writing a specification for another engineer differs from asking a finance head what a report is for. The table maps both lists against what an engineer usually brings.
| Skill named | Source and period | What an engineer usually has | What to build |
|---|---|---|---|
| Communication and stakeholder engagement | IIBA 2026 survey: communication first, stakeholder engagement in the top five | Written technical specs, code reviews, sprint demos | Running requirement sessions with non-technical teams |
| Critical thinking and problem-solving | IIBA 2026 survey: critical thinking second, problem-solving in the top five | Debugging and root-cause analysis | Framing a business problem before choosing a solution |
| Querying and data storytelling | LinkedIn Skills on the Rise 2026 India, via Storyboard18, 24 February 2026 | Queries and data debugging | Dashboards and clear explanations for decision-makers |
| Prompt engineering and workflow automation | LinkedIn Skills on the Rise 2026 India, via Storyboard18, 24 February 2026 | Scripting and API work | Applying them to business processes |
Domain knowledge is the other gap. Naukri's readings show where hiring grew in 2026: insurance, retail and e-commerce functions, and BFSI functions. Domain knowledge from one of those sectors is something the tools alone do not supply.
The blog's guide to what a business analyst does lists the daily work, which helps in judging which gaps matter most.
Business analyst or DevOps: which has better pay in the long run?
Business analyst pay rises with experience in both publishers' data. AmbitionBox's 2026 employee-reported data averages Rs 7.3 lakh at 1-3 years, Rs 9.2 lakh at 3-6 years, Rs 12 lakh at 6-9 years and Rs 14.4 lakh at 9-12 years, with an overall average of Rs 10.2 lakh from 1.5 lakh reports. Indeed India's average base salary for business analysts was Rs 8,90,431 a year on 16 October 2026, from 631 salaries in postings over 36 months. Both cover all levels and employers.
On the skills side, the NASSCOM-Deloitte India Technology Industry Compensation Benchmarking Survey 2025 finds the technical proficiency expected of campus hires has moved over three years from basic coding and cloud fundamentals to advanced data analytics, AI/ML and DevOps skills. DevOps is therefore still on the employer wish list, alongside analytics. Long-run pay in either role depends on seniority, domain and skill mix, and neither a title change nor a certificate settles it. What does a three-month switch plan look like from inside the current job?
Take a hypothetical QA engineer in Pune with six years' experience who wants to move into an insurance analytics team. The plan stays inside the current job, because the first proof of analyst skill is work done at the current employer.
In the first month, the engineer picks one reporting problem at work, such as defect trends or release delays, and writes it up as a business question with a named reader. This builds the framing skill. In the second month, the engineer answers that question with a query and a simple dashboard, and presents it to a non-technical colleague, collecting their questions. In the third month, the engineer documents one real process as a short requirements note and adds one AI-assisted step, such as drafting the summary, with the figures checked by hand.
The result is three work samples and one internal reference. The blog's guide to an AI career switch at 30 covers the wider decisions for mid-career switchers. Analytics and MBA routes are compared in a separate post on business analytics versus an MBA.
Where does a business analytics certification with AI fit for engineers?
Employers are mixed on credentials. In the NASSCOM and Indeed report, 40% of employers preferred demonstrable AI skills or certifications over a degree, and CXOToday's coverage says 32% weigh skills, certifications and degrees equally. An engineer already holds a degree, so the question is whether a certificate adds evidence of analytics and AI skills. It is one signal, and work samples count as much.
Certification Program in Business Analytics with Gen & Agentic AI is an online certification from BITS School of Management (BITSoM), offered in partnership with Masai, with live online classes and an optional campus workshop. It covers business analytics, SQL and Python, data visualisation in Tableau and Power BI, machine learning, generative AI, prompt engineering and building AI agents. Its modules include Foundations of Business Analytics & Data Science, Data Warehouse for AI and Python Crash Course for GenAI.
Frequently asked questions
Can a software engineer become a business analyst?
Yes, and the skills IIBA's 2026 survey ranks highest, communication and critical thinking, are, on this evidence, not tied to a coding background. Engineers usually bring querying and problem-solving. The gaps are stakeholder engagement, business framing and domain knowledge, which can be built through work done inside the current job.
Is it a good time to leave IT services?
Hiring is mixed. Naukri's JobSpeak had IT and software services down 4% in September 2026 after readings of up 6%, down 7% and up 11% in earlier months, while AI and ML roles rose 20%. NASSCOM expects FY27 hiring to shift from volume to skill mix, so skills matter more than sector.
Can a QA or support engineer move into business analysis?
QA and support work already involves defect reporting, testing against requirements and talking to users, which overlaps with IIBA's top skills of communication, critical thinking and stakeholder engagement. A written requirements sample from current work is a practical proof.
How much does a business analyst earn in India?
Indeed India shows an average base salary of Rs 8,90,431 a year, from 631 salaries in postings, updated on 16 October 2026. AmbitionBox's 2026 data shows Rs 7.3 lakh at 1-3 years and Rs 12 lakh at 6-9 years. They are market averages and not an offer to a person switching from engineering.
Do analyst roles need AI skills now?
Increasingly. Indeed's India report, as covered by IANS in March 2026, found 40% of data and analytics postings referenced AI in January 2026. IIBA's 2026 survey found 69% of analysts say AI is positively affecting their careers, and the 40% posting figure points the same way.
