Operations manager to business analyst: how to make the move
Operations manager to business analyst: IIBA ranks communication and critical thinking first; WEF has 79% of India employers listing analytical thinking.
An operations manager can become a business analyst by adding data skills to experience that already covers KPIs, stakeholders and process knowledge. IIBA's 2026 survey of 2,120 business analysis professionals ranks communication first and critical thinking second, and the WEF Future of Jobs Report 2025 India profile found 79% of surveyed employers listing analytical thinking among core skills of 2025.
What does an operations manager already bring to a business analyst role?
IIBA's 2026 survey ranks communication first for the third year running, critical thinking second, and problem-solving, listening and stakeholder engagement to complete the top five. An operations manager who negotiates with vendors, settles escalations and explains a missed target to senior leaders has practised most of those for years. The survey covers practitioners worldwide and does not describe Indian postings, but it shows what the job leans on.
The other half is process and KPI knowledge. A manager who owns turnaround times, error rates or cost per order knows which numbers matter, where the data is messy and who disputes it. That context takes years to acquire, which is why it travels well into an analyst role.
The reason analysts are hired in the first place is also close to operations work. The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, in its Occupational Outlook Handbook page for management analysts (last modified 27 August 2026), says demand is expected to increase as organisations seek ways to improve efficiency and control costs. The page projects 10% employment growth from 2025 to 2035. It describes an American occupation and not Indian job counts, but the reasoning will sound familiar to anyone who has run a cost review.
Which data skills do leaders expect, and which should come first?
Indian sources give a short list of skills. WEF's Future of Jobs Report 2025, in its India economy profile, found 79% of surveyed employers listing analytical thinking and 62% listing AI and big data among core skills of 2025, and 94% expect AI and big data to be a skill of increasing use by 2030. foundit's December 2025 Hiring Snapshot lists Python (22% share), SQL/Databases (18%), Java (16%), Cloud (12%) and Data Analysis (10%) as the top skills for 0-3 years of experience, and the share is foundit's own measure across the skills it tracks.
For early-career roles, CXOToday's coverage of the NASSCOM and Indeed report of May 2026 names analytical skills, Microsoft Excel and Python among the internship skills in demand. LinkedIn's Skills on the Rise 2026 for India, as reported by Storyboard18 on 24 February 2026, groups querying, database optimisation, data storytelling and data-driven decision-making into one data and analytics cluster.
The marks in the last column of the table are an editorial reading of a typical operations role and not survey results.
| Skill | Source and period | Reading | Typical starting point for an operations manager |
|---|---|---|---|
| Communication | IIBA, 2026 survey | Ranked first, third year running | Usually already held |
| Critical thinking | IIBA, 2026 survey | Ranked second | Usually already held |
| Problem-solving, listening, stakeholder engagement | IIBA, 2026 survey | Complete the top five | Usually already held |
| Analytical thinking | WEF Future of Jobs Report, 2025 (India profile) | 79% of surveyed employers list it as a core skill of 2025 | Partly held, needs formal method |
| Data-driven decision-making and querying | LinkedIn Skills on the Rise 2026 (India), via Storyboard18, 24 February 2026 | Grouped in one data and analytics cluster | Partly held, needs formal method |
| SQL and databases | foundit, December 2025 Hiring Snapshot | 18% share among top skills for 0-3 years | Usually a gap |
| Data analytics and visualisation | CXOToday on NASSCOM and Indeed, May 2026 | Named among top skills across industries | Partly held, reads dashboards daily |
Read in order, the table suggests a sequence. Framing a decision with data comes first, because it builds on what the manager already does. Data manipulation in Excel and then SQL comes second. Dashboards and a BI tool come third. Programming beyond that can wait until a target role asks for it. The blog's explainer on business analytics skills that support better decisions covers the first of those in more detail, and the post on whether a business analyst needs coding covers the last.
Is the pivot into data analytics dead in 2026, or just hitting a wall?
The market is narrower and not dead, and the openings that exist are hard to fill. Naukri's JobSpeak for September 2026 put its overall hiring index up 2% year on year, with IT and software services down 4% and AI and ML roles up 20%. Indeed Hiring Lab's update for October 2025 found Indian postings on its platform 19.8% lower than a year earlier, though it says its India data skews towards tech, management and sales.
Employers describe the other side of that picture. In the NASSCOM and Indeed report of 19 May 2026, 58% cited low applicant volume as a key hiring challenge and 50% cited skills mismatch. LinkedIn research reported by Storyboard18 found 74% of recruiters in India had difficulty finding qualified talent, while 38% of Indian job seekers felt unprepared for how quickly technology is reshaping required competencies.
Posting data cannot say which of the two a given career changer is facing. An application that lists duties from a previous role gives a screener nothing to test, and that reads as a wall. One that shows a KPI analysed in SQL or Excel, a dashboard built on real operating data and a recommendation that changed a decision gives the screener something to check. Making that evidence visible is the part within the applicant's control.
Which sectors hire operations experience together with analytics?
Operations managers sit in insurance, retail, e-commerce, BPO and banking, and Naukri's 2026 readings for those sectors moved a good deal from month to month. Insurance hiring was up 28% year on year in February 2026, 19% in May and 12% in August, then largely stable in September. Retail was up 14% in February and 15% in August, and in September Naukri's merchandising, retail and eCommerce roles grew 18%.
Banking was down 15% in May and up 10% in August, with the BFSI, investments and trading function up 29%. Naukri says August was helped by festive-season timing. By September hiring in IT and software services, pharma and biotech, and FMCG was each down 4% and healthcare down 3%.
These are sector and function totals and not counts of analyst vacancies. Their use is narrower: they show where operations experience is attached to growing hiring, which matters for a manager who wants to keep domain knowledge and add a new title.
What does a six-step move plan look like?
- Choose the destination: a business analyst role built around requirements and process, a data or BI analyst role built around queries and dashboards, or an analytics lead inside the current function.
- Rewrite current work in analytics terms. For each KPI owned, note the data source, how it is defined and which decision it changed.
- Learn statistics at the managerial level first: whether a change in a KPI is real, how correlation differs from causation and how a simple regression is read. Excel is enough for that.
- Add SQL for pulling data and a BI tool for presenting it.
- Produce one piece of evidence on real or public operating data, such as a service-level diagnostic or a demand forecast, with the recommendation written out.
- Ask for analytics work in the current role while applying, so that the title follows the work and the applications carry a reference.
Managers who prefer a structured route can look at Executive Certificate Programme in Business Analytics and AI for Aspiring Managers, an online programme from IIM Ranchi, run with Masai as the implementation partner, taught in live online classes with an optional campus immersion at IIM Ranchi. Its modules include Data Management, SQL and Python for Analytics, Data Visualisation and Storytelling for Managers, and Managerial Statistics and Quantitative Thinking. A programme can supply method and feedback, and the work sample still has to come from the learner, a point developed in the post on whether a business analytics certification is worth it.
Frequently asked questions
How can an operations analyst become a business analyst?
Start by describing current work as analysis: the metric, the data behind it and the decision it informed. IIBA's 2026 survey puts communication and critical thinking at the top of the skills business analysts rely on, and both are daily practice in operations. Add SQL and dashboard skills, then apply with one worked example.
Can a project manager move into business analysis?
Yes, the skills overlap. IIBA's 2026 survey lists stakeholder engagement and problem-solving in its top five, and both are routine for project managers. The gap is usually data work. IIBA also reports that 81% of its respondents say business analysis is formally recognised in their organisation, so the role is an established one.
What does a business operations analyst do?
Job descriptions vary by employer, but the role generally tracks operational metrics, finds where a process loses time or money and reports the findings to the managers who own the process. It sits close to the work described in the plan above, which is why it is a common stepping stone for operations staff.
Does an operations manager need to learn coding to become a business analyst?
Not necessarily at first. LinkedIn's Skills on the Rise 2026 for India, as reported by Storyboard18, groups data-driven decision-making with querying and data storytelling, and foundit's December 2025 table puts SQL/Databases at 18% share for early-career roles. CXOToday's coverage of NASSCOM and Indeed names Excel and Python among internship skills in demand, so basic querying and light Python are worth adding over time.
What is the career path after business analyst?
The usual ladder runs through senior analyst, lead and manager, with branches into consulting, product and analytics leadership. Which of these branches fits depends on the target role, and the wider case for the field is made in is business analytics a good career in India.
