NITIE Is Now IIM Mumbai: What Changed, What Stayed, and Why It Matters for Working Professionals

Yes, they are the same institute. The dates, the NIRF ranking and what the IIM name changes for working professionals.

Yes, NITIE and IIM Mumbai are the same institution. The National Institute of Industrial Engineering in Powai, Mumbai, founded in 1963, became the Indian Institute of Management Mumbai with effect from 16 August 2023 under the Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Act, 2023. It is ranked 6th in the NIRF 2025 Management Rankings, the same position it held in 2024.

If you are a working professional weighing an executive MBA, the name change raises practical questions that the headlines skipped. Is the degree now an IIM degree? Does the ranking hold up? Did the institute keep the operations and supply chain strength it was known for, or has it become a generalist school overnight? This post answers those with verified dates and figures, and nothing else.

A short history: 1963 to 2023

NITIE was set up in 1963 by the Government of India with assistance from the United Nations Development Programme, channelled through the International Labour Organization. It was registered as a society, and its first name, the National Institute for Training in Industrial Engineering, says exactly what it was for: training industrial engineers for a country that was building its manufacturing base. The campus sits in Powai, between the Powai and Vihar lakes, and that is where IIM Mumbai still is.

Over the following decades the name shortened to the National Institute of Industrial Engineering, and the institute built a reputation in operations, supply chain, analytics and industrial management, with a legacy of post-graduate diplomas in industrial engineering and industrial management that hiring managers in manufacturing, logistics and consulting still recognise. The institute's own description today still leads with those strengths and with its "60+ years of legacy".

When did NITIE become IIM Mumbai? The 2023 Act, step by step

The conversion was done by Parliament, not by a rebrand. The sequence in 2023 was:

  • 12 July 2023: the Union Cabinet approved the amendment to the Indian Institutes of Management Act, 2017.
  • 4 August 2023: the Lok Sabha passed the Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill, 2023.
  • 8 August 2023: the Rajya Sabha passed it.
  • 11 August 2023: the Bill received Presidential assent and was published in the Gazette as Act No. 23 of 2023.
  • 16 August 2023: the Act came into force by a Ministry of Education notification (F.No. 8-19/2021-TS.V), and NITIE was from that date the Indian Institute of Management Mumbai.

A Rajya Sabha answer on 6 December 2023 put the official date on record: NITIE was "converted into IIM Mumbai on 16.08.2023". Other dates you see online usually refer to the Cabinet approval or the Gazette, not the effective date.

The 2023 Act did more than add a name to a schedule. The IIM Act, 2017 is the law that declares the IIMs institutes of national importance, and the 2023 amendment also made the President of India the Visitor of every IIM, with a role in the appointment of directors and board chairpersons. So IIM Mumbai joined the IIM system at the same moment that system's governance was being tightened. For a working professional the practical consequence is simpler: the institution you would enrol in is governed by the same Act as every other IIM.

What the IIM status means for your degree

Under its old name, NITIE awarded post-graduate diplomas. The programmes now listed on the IIM Mumbai Executive Education site lead with the line "Lead with an IIM Mumbai degree", and the two weekend programmes for working professionals are named as MBAs: the two-year MBA-PGPM and the one-year Executive MBA in Wealth Management. The certificate wording on the PGPM page distinguishes "MBA-PGPM" for the campus weekend programme from "MBA-ePGPM" for the live-virtual outreach-centre version, with the same curriculum, faculty and degree.

Not every programme in the portfolio is an MBA, and the site is careful about that. The one-year entrepreneurship programme is a Post Graduate Program for Executives, and the one-year public policy programme awards a Post Graduate Diploma in Public Policy Management. Every programme does list IIM Mumbai alumni status on completion. The institute describes alumni benefits only in general terms (networking, alumni privileges, professional development events) and does not publish an itemised list, so ask before you assume a lifetime library card.

The point for a prospective applicant is this: if a line on your CV that reads "MBA, IIM Mumbai" is part of why you are considering the programme, the two weekend MBAs deliver it, and the other three deliver an IIM Mumbai post-graduate credential and alumni status, which is a different thing and should be described as such.

IIM Mumbai's NIRF ranking: the trend, not just the number

The NIRF Management ranking is the one external benchmark that covers every IIM on the same scale, so it is the right place to test whether the name change was cosmetic.

NIRF Management RankingsIIM Mumbai's rank
2023 (ranked as NITIE)7th
20246th
2025 (released 4 September 2025)6th, score 77.58

The 2025 top ten, for context: IIM Ahmedabad (83.29), IIM Bangalore (81.56), IIM Kozhikode (79.85), IIT Delhi (78.94), IIM Lucknow (77.97), IIM Mumbai (77.58), IIM Calcutta (77.34), IIM Indore (75.68), MDI Gurgaon (71.96) and XLRI Jamshedpur (70.63). IIM Ahmedabad has been first for six consecutive years, 2020 to 2025.

The rank was 7th before the conversion and 6th after it, so the institution was already a top-ten school as NITIE; the IIM name did not create the ranking. The gaps are also small: 0.39 points separate IIM Mumbai from IIM Lucknow above it and 0.24 from IIM Calcutta below it. Treat "6th among all management institutions" as accurate and "5th among the IIMs in 2025" (behind Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Kozhikode and Lucknow) as a fair reading of the same table, but do not read much into one-place movements year to year. One widely shared 2025 list transposed Lucknow and Mumbai; the director's own statement and the detailed score tables confirm 6th.

What stayed the same: the techno-managerial DNA

Some applicants worry that an institute famous for operations would dilute that identity to look like a general IIM. The programme pages suggest the opposite. The MBA-PGPM's six modules still carry Optimization and Decision Techniques, Operations Management, Supply Chain Management, Data Science for Managerial Decisions and ESG Analytics as core courses, alongside the marketing, finance, strategy and HR courses you would expect in a general-management MBA. The institute's self-description still names operations, supply chain, analytics and industrial management as what it is known for.

What has been added is breadth. The executive education portfolio for the January 2027 batch is five programmes wide: the weekend MBA-PGPM, the Wealth Management EMBA, a full-time MBA (Creative Industries) with Whistling Woods International, an online entrepreneurship programme with campus immersions, and a blended public policy programme taught partly by retired Chief Secretaries. The campus has also added an incubator, the IIM Mumbai Incubation Center (AIC-NIFIE), inaugurated in June 2025, alongside the institute-level Centre for Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship. The old strengths are intact; new tracks sit next to them.

What changed in practice for working professionals

Here is what is different for someone applying now compared with a NITIE applicant five years ago.

  • The credential. A weekend MBA degree from an IIM, where the institute earlier awarded post-graduate diplomas.
  • The entrance route. You no longer need CAT. IIM Mumbai runs its own home-proctored IMAT on 08 November 2026, and accepts valid CAT, GMAT or GRE scores as alternatives. The IMAT 2026 guide covers the timeline and preparation.
  • The geography. The MBA-ePGPM brings the weekend MBA to outreach centres in Pune, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Delhi NCR through live virtual classes, at a lower fee than the Powai campus. The MBA-PGPM weekend MBA guide has the city-by-city detail.
  • The price. The MBA-PGPM costs Rs 18,00,000 at the Mumbai campus on the annual plan (Rs 19,00,000 module-wise) and Rs 14,50,000 at outreach centres (Rs 15,00,000 module-wise). The Wealth Management EMBA is Rs 15,00,000. Those are IIM-level fees, inclusive of taxes, plus a Rs 3,000 application fee. The IIM Mumbai executive MBA overview puts all five programmes' fees in one table.

And here is what did not change, because the name on the gate cannot change it: the time. The weekend programmes run Saturday and Sunday for one or two years with a 75 percent attendance requirement, grade penalties between 50 and 75 percent, and an F grade below 50 percent. The Wealth Management EMBA states that placement support is not offered, and the MBA-PGPM page makes no placement claims. An IIM name gets your CV read; it does not attend class for you or find you a job.

A mini-scenario: does the name change your decision?

Consider a 34-year-old supply chain manager at an FMCG company in Hyderabad with nine years' experience. In 2021 she decided NITIE's diploma would not travel well outside manufacturing. In 2026 she is looking at the same campus under a new name, with a weekend MBA delivered at a Hyderabad outreach centre for Rs 14,50,000, an operations-heavy core that matches her field, and an IIM degree that her employer's leadership programme recognises. Nothing about the teaching she wanted has been lost; the two things that stopped her, the credential and the commute, have both been addressed. That is the honest case for the conversion mattering. It does not make the Rs 14,50,000 or the two years of weekends any smaller.

Frequently asked questions

Is NITIE the same as IIM Mumbai?

Yes. The National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE), Powai, Mumbai, was converted into the Indian Institute of Management Mumbai with effect from 16 August 2023 under the Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Act, 2023. Same campus, same institution, same 1963 founding; a new name, IIM status and a new executive education portfolio.

When did NITIE become IIM Mumbai?

The amendment was approved by the Cabinet on 12 July 2023, passed by the Lok Sabha on 4 August and the Rajya Sabha on 8 August 2023, received Presidential assent on 11 August 2023, and came into force on 16 August 2023 by Ministry of Education notification. A Rajya Sabha answer dated 6 December 2023 confirms 16 August 2023 as the conversion date.

What is IIM Mumbai's NIRF ranking in 2025?

IIM Mumbai is ranked 6th in the NIRF 2025 Management Rankings, released on 4 September 2025, with a score of 77.58. It was 6th in 2024 as well and 7th in 2023, when it was still ranked under the NITIE name. Among the IIMs it sits behind Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Kozhikode and Lucknow in 2025, with IIM Calcutta immediately below it.

Does IIM Mumbai award an MBA degree to working professionals?

The two-year weekend MBA-PGPM and the one-year Executive MBA in Wealth Management are MBA programmes for working professionals. The MBA-ePGPM certificate names the outreach-centre version. The entrepreneurship programme is a Post Graduate Program for Executives and the public policy programme awards a Post Graduate Diploma, not an MBA. All five list IIM Mumbai alumni status on completion.

Is IIM Mumbai still strong in operations and supply chain?

The institute still describes itself as known for operations, supply chain, analytics and industrial management, and the MBA-PGPM core includes Operations Management, Supply Chain Management, Optimization and Decision Techniques, Data Science for Managerial Decisions and ESG Analytics alongside general-management courses. The 2023 conversion added programmes in wealth management, creative industries, entrepreneurship and public policy without removing that core.

Who leads IIM Mumbai?

Prof. Manoj Kumar Tiwari has been the founding director since August 2023 and was reappointed for a second term effective 27 February 2025. Mr. Shashi Kiran Shetty is Chairperson of the Board of Governors. Under the 2023 Act, the President of India is the Visitor of every IIM, with a role in the appointment of directors and board chairpersons.
