Family Business Management Courses in India: How the Next Generation Prepares to Take Over and Scale

A family business management course in India is a post-graduate or executive programme that teaches second and third generation owners to govern, finance, professionalise and grow an enterprise they did not start. Options run from a 10-day residential programme at Rs 80,000 plus GST to a 15-month ISB programme above Rs 44 lakh, with IIM Mumbai's one-year online PGPEx-EIM at Rs 6,00,000 in between.

This guide is for the person who will inherit the keys, not the founder who cut them. It covers the succession data, what a programme must teach, which programmes publish fees, and how IIM Mumbai's venture-focused PGPEx-EIM and its general-management weekend MBA-PGPM fit different owner profiles. Facts were read on the institutes' own pages on 29 October 2026.

The succession problem, in verified numbers

Credit Suisse's Family 1000 study of 2018 ranked India third in the world by number of family-owned listed companies, with 111 firms worth USD 839 billion, behind China and the United States. The 2026 Barclays Private Clients Hurun India list values the top 300 family businesses at USD 1.46 trillion, about Rs 138 lakh crore, as of 30 June 2026. HSBC Global Private Banking's May 2025 study of 1,798 high-net-worth entrepreneurs across 10 Asian markets is reported to estimate that family businesses contribute around 79 percent of India's GDP.

In the same HSBC study, 79 percent of Indian owners plan to pass the business to family and 88 percent trust the next generation, yet only 7 percent of Indian heirs feel obliged to take over, and 45 percent do not expect their children to.

PwC's 12th Global Family Business Survey, released on 10 February 2026, adds the governance gap. Among Indian respondents, 36 percent have no clear succession plan (28 percent globally), 52 percent report resistance from the senior generation, 21 percent have delayed succession, 42 percent have no women on the board and 30 percent have family-only boards, while 91 percent expect growth. One caveat: the India sample was about 40 of 1,325 respondents worldwide, so read these as directional.

That is the gap a family business management course exists to close: a generation trusted but not obliged, expected to grow the business without a plan, a professional board or a date for taking charge.

What a family business management course should teach

A good curriculum maps onto the five jobs a successor usually has to do at once:

  • Governance and succession: family constitutions, board structure, roles for non-family professionals, and agreeing a handover timeline with a reluctant parent.
  • Finance and capital: reading the accounts you will sign, keeping the family's money apart from the firm's, and raising debt or equity in a business that has only ever used retained earnings.
  • Innovation and new ventures: launching a new line or market without betting the legacy business.
  • Digital and data: e-commerce, analytics and AI applied to a factory, a distributor or a trading firm.
  • Scaling and professionalisation: systems, hiring beyond the community, internationalising, and leading employees who remember you as a child.

A programme heavy on inspiration and light on finance and governance will not help in the first board meeting where you disagree with your father.

Where IIM Mumbai's PGPEx-EIM fits the next-generation owner

The PGPEx-EIM names family business owners among its intended participants, and its selection rewards that background: relevant family business, startup, R&D or entrepreneurial experience earns 10 of the 100 selection marks, alongside 40 for the test, 30 for the interview, 10 for graduation and 5 each for Class X and XII. The application needs a Statement of Purpose outlining a business idea.

The three capstones give that idea a timetable. Capstone 1, the Venture Blueprint, sits in the Foundations module with courses on startup failure and resilience, venture capital and financial management, marketing and project management. Capstone 2, Market Proof, follows AI and data analytics, operations and supply chain in a startup, product management, and legal aspects and IP. Capstone 3, the Founder's Thesis, described on the page as an investment-ready plan, closes the Leadership and Growth module alongside leadership and communication, sustainable development for business and internationalising business.

The 30 hours of mentorship across 10 sessions with CXOs and investors put outside voices around a plan otherwise judged only at the dinner table. And after the Founder's Thesis, participants may apply to take the venture into TEJAS, IIM Mumbai's entrepreneurship and incubation initiative, subject to screening; TEJAS states that selection does not guarantee funding. For the wider choice between short certificates, incubators and one-year programmes, see the guide to entrepreneurship courses from IIMs.

When the weekend MBA-PGPM is the better choice

If your gap is breadth rather than a venture, the two-year MBA-PGPM is the general-management alternative: a full MBA degree across six modules, with 16 core courses that include financial reporting and accounting, corporate finance, operations and supply chain management, strategic management, data science for managerial decisions, B2B marketing and managing negotiations, plus 16 electives for a second-year specialisation and a two-stage capstone.

The fee is Rs 18,00,000 at the Mumbai campus (Rs 19,00,000 module-wise) or Rs 14,50,000 on the annual plan at the outreach centres, inclusive of taxes, against Rs 6,00,000 for the PGPEx-EIM. It needs two years of experience, not one, and attendance below 75 percent costs grades. The weekend MBA guide covers the module sequence and each city.

A worked example

Take a 29-year-old second-generation owner of a Rs 40 crore packaging business in Vapi, with a B.Com, four years on the shop floor and in sales, and a plan for a sustainable-packaging export line his father considers risky. A 15-month ISB programme above Rs 52 lakh all in would strain the family's capital at the moment he wants to invest it.

The PGPEx-EIM matches his situation. His SOP is the export line. Friday evenings and weekends online keep him in the factory, with two 3-day trips to Powai. The Venture Blueprint forces a first cut of the numbers by the end of the Foundations module, Market Proof tests whether European buyers will pay, and the Founder's Thesis gives his father, and a banker, a document to argue with. If his real worry is that he cannot read a balance sheet or run a hiring process, the weekend MBA-PGPM at the Mumbai or Pune centre is the honest answer, at three times the fee and twice the time.

The trade-offs

  • Neither IIM Mumbai programme makes placement claims. A successor rarely needs them, but do not expect campus recruitment if the family business does not work out.
  • Immersion travel is extra for the PGPEx-EIM, and two years of weekend attendance is a real cost for the MBA-PGPM if your business runs on Saturdays.
  • The PGPEx-EIM is not an MBA. If the family or the board wants the letters, the MBA-PGPM provides them.
  • A business idea is compulsory for the PGPEx-EIM. A successor who simply wants to understand the existing business should look at the MBA-PGPM or IIM Calcutta's certificate.

Frequently asked questions

What is a family business management course?

It is a post-graduate or executive programme for owners, heirs and senior managers of family enterprises. The content typically covers governance and succession, finance, professionalising operations, launching new ventures and scaling, delivered part-time so participants keep running the business. Formats range from 10-day residential programmes to two-year MBAs.

Which is the best family business management course in India?

It depends on the size of the business and your role. For a large firm with outside capital, ISB's PGP MFAB and IIM Lucknow's MBA in Family Business are built for that scale, at Rs 44.7 lakh plus GST and Rs 25 lakh respectively. For a successor launching a new line while working, IIM Mumbai's PGPEx-EIM at Rs 6,00,000 is the cheapest one-year IIM option with alumni status.

Does IIM Mumbai have a family business programme?

Not under that name. Its one-year PGPEx-EIM explicitly lists family business owners among the people it is designed for, gives selection credit for family business experience, and is built around three capstones on a venture of your own. Its two-year weekend MBA-PGPM is the general-management option for owners who need breadth first.

Can I do a family business course without leaving the business?

Yes. IIM Mumbai's PGPEx-EIM runs online on Friday evenings and weekends with two 3-day immersions; IIM Calcutta's certificate runs on Sunday afternoons with two campus weeks; IIM Indore's runs on Saturdays with nine campus days. ISB, SPJIMR and IIM Lucknow use modular formats of roughly a week on campus a month.

Is the PGPEx-EIM the same as IIM Mumbai's short entrepreneurship certificate?

No. The Certificate Program in Entrepreneurship and Start Up Mastery is a 70-hour, roughly four-month short course run by IIM Mumbai with NSDC and delivered by Masai School, priced at Rs 80,000 on the partner page, with a co-branded certificate and no alumni status. The PGPEx-EIM is a one-year, 400-plus-hour post-graduate programme with IIM Mumbai alumni status.

Next step

If you are a next-generation owner with a venture to build, register for the PGPEx-EIM and book the IMAT for 08 November 2026, or submit a valid CAT, GMAT or GRE score; classes start online on 16 January 2027. If you need the general-management degree first, the MBA-PGPM uses the same IMAT date, and every programme is on the IIM Mumbai Executive Education hub.
