MLOps skills Indian employers ask for in model deployment roles
MLOps skills in India in 2026: foundit found MLOps and model deployment in 10% of AI postings in 2025, up 42%, second only to generative AI in growth.
MLOps is the work of getting a trained model into production and keeping it reliable once real users depend on it. Indian employers asked for it more in 2025 than in 2024. foundit's Insights Tracker found MLOps and model deployment named in 10% of Indian AI postings in 2025, growing 42% year on year, behind only generative AI and LLM skills at 58%.
What does MLOps mean in a job posting?
The term covers the steps that sit between a model that works in a notebook and a model that works for customers. A posting that asks for MLOps usually means packaging a model so other systems can call it, running it on cloud infrastructure, checking that its answers stay good, and reacting when they do not.
Some postings never use the label. Observe.AI's AI Agent Engineer role in Hyderabad, dated 23 September 2026, never says MLOps, yet its list of design, integration and deployment of enterprise voice and chat agents, API integrations, telephony setup and evaluation frameworks is deployment work in everything but name. Rubrik's Senior Applied AI Engineer posting, updated 21 October 2026, asks for REST APIs, distributed systems and reliability practices from someone who has shipped AI-agent features into production.
That matters for anyone searching: the skills can sit under titles such as AI Platform Engineer, AI Automation Engineer or Agent Builder. Naukri's AI at Work analysis, summarised on 16 July 2026, said recruiters increasingly search for those titles. A search for "MLOps engineer" alone will miss part of the market.
How much demand is there for deployment skills in India?
The share is modest and the growth rate is strong. In foundit's breakdown of 2025 AI postings, Machine Learning appeared in 34% of postings, growing 29%. Generative AI and LLMs appeared in 22%, growing 58%. MLOps and model deployment appeared in 10%, growing 42%, and AI engineering in 9%, growing 35%.
Shares overlap because one posting can name several skills, so none of these figures should be added together, and postings are not the same as filled jobs.
The supply side looks thin. TeamLease Digital's Digital Skills and Salary Primer for FY2026-27, built on 37,000 tech and digital roles across 18 cities, says only 16% of IT professionals in India hold AI skills.
The same primer says that 1 in 3 organisations has reached the AI maturity level where pay starts to rise sharply, and that AI-Core roles, which build and own intelligent systems, start at 2.5 to 3 times the pay of AI-Support roles, which keep AI-enabled operations running. The page gives no rupee figure, so that is a ratio between two role types and not a salary.
Naukri's JobSpeak showed overall AI and ML hiring up 20% year on year in September 2026, against 2% for white-collar hiring as a whole. The pillar post on machine learning engineer demand sets out that month-by-month record in full.
Which deployment stack do postings name, from APIs to monitoring?
The postings available name the stack by function more than by product, and the table collects what each one says about running systems in production.
| Posting | Deployment-side asks | Experience bar |
|---|---|---|
| Observe.AI, AI Agent Engineer (Hyderabad, 23 September 2026) | Deploy enterprise voice and chat agents, API integrations, workflow configuration, telephony setup, evaluation frameworks | Not stated |
| Rubrik, Senior Applied AI Engineer (Bangalore, updated 21 October 2026) | Shipping AI-agent features into production, REST APIs, distributed systems, reliability practices | 8+ years of software engineering |
| Sarvam, Agent Engineer (Bengaluru, 20 August 2026) | Python across backend, data pipelines, APIs and cloud, evals, working with a customer's engineering team | 3+ years |
| Sarvam, ML Engineer, Training Infra (Bengaluru, 7 October 2026) | Distributed training with Megatron-LM, DeepSpeed, FSDP or NeMo, GPU and CUDA knowledge, PyTorch internals | 3+ years |
Read by capability, employers expect Python that goes well beyond notebooks, APIs that other software can call, cloud and data-pipeline literacy, and a way to know whether the output is still correct.
The Sarvam training-infrastructure role is the far end of the range. It asks for experience building ML training infrastructure and a BS or MS in computer science or equivalent demonstrated experience. It is not an entry-level job, and it differs from the applied roles in how close to the hardware the work sits.
Which production skills, evals, drift and cost, separate candidates?
Evaluation is the clearest production skill in the postings. Sarvam's Agent Engineer role asks for evals that separate signal from noise, and Observe.AI's lists evaluation frameworks. In plain terms, an eval is a repeatable test of whether a model's answers are good enough, run before and after every change.
Drift and cost are two further production topics. Model drift is the gradual loss of accuracy when live data stops resembling the data a model was trained on. Inference cost is what each prediction costs to serve, which matters most when a language model answers thousands of requests. Both are habits that reliable systems need.
Sarvam's posting states what it values most: having shipped and run something real users depended on matters more than years. That is the filter in practice. A candidate who has kept a model running for a few weeks, watched it misbehave and fixed it can say something that a course certificate cannot.
The earlier post on the AI and ML skills in demand gives the wider list, and the post on what makes an AI agent more than a language model covers the agent layer these deployments serve.
How does MLOps differ from DevOps and from data science?
DevOps keeps software running; MLOps keeps software running when part of it is a statistical model whose outputs can change without any code change. A normal service either throws an error or it does not. A model can return a confident answer that is wrong, which is why the postings stress evals and reliability together.
Data science is the other neighbour. A data scientist explores data and builds models, and an MLOps or ML platform engineer makes the result dependable at scale. Naukri's April 2026 release listed the most in-demand AI and ML roles as Machine Learning Engineer, Search Engineer, Data Scientist and Data Platform Engineer, which shows the overlap between model work and data infrastructure.
Among AI-led fresher jobs in foundit's July 2026 analysis, AI Operations made up 10% and AI QA and Testing 5%, against 28% for AI/ML Engineer. Those two are the entry-level cousins of deployment work: they keep AI-enabled systems running and check them. They also match TeamLease Digital's AI-Support category, which pays less than AI-Core roles according to its ratio. foundit's own reading was that employers are buying "builders, not researchers".
For freshers weighing these routes, the post on whether AI and ML is oversaturated for freshers describes the competition, and the post on entry-level machine learning jobs lists what those roles ask for.
Which courses are proving worth it, and what should a deployment portfolio show?
Postings reward evidence of shipped work. Naukri's AI at Work survey of its own users found 77% of professionals use AI at work at least sometimes and 79% are upskilling or plan to start soon, yet only 35% say their employer actively provides AI training. Visible, checkable work is one way to show skills when employer training is uncommon.
A deployment portfolio can be small. One trained model served behind an API, a written evaluation set with its results, a log of what went wrong in the first few weeks and how it was fixed, and a note on what each prediction costs would answer most of what the postings ask. A hypothetical analyst in Pune who adds that to a churn model has shown more than one who lists a certification.
Employer wording leans the same way: Sarvam asks for evidence that something was shipped and run, and Rubrik asks for 1 to 2 years of hands-on experience putting AI-agent features into production.
Where does a structured programme fit?
Some candidates prefer a taught sequence to self-study. Certification in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning is an online programme from Vishlesan i-Hub, IIT Patna, delivered on Masai's online platform, that covers Python, machine learning, deep learning, generative AI and LLMs, agentic systems and deploying models to production. Its last module covers production deployment, MLOps and a capstone.
What a learner does with a taught sequence, and what they ship afterwards, decides its value.
Frequently asked questions
What does an MLOps engineer do?
An MLOps engineer gets models into production and keeps them reliable: packaging, serving through APIs, running on cloud infrastructure and checking that outputs stay good. Postings seldom use the label. Observe.AI's September 2026 role covers deployment, API integrations and evaluation frameworks, which is the same work under a different title.
How much demand is there for MLOps skills in India?
foundit's tracker found MLOps and model deployment in 10% of AI postings in 2025, growing 42% year on year. That share is smaller than machine learning at 34% and generative AI at 22%, but growth is second only to generative AI. TeamLease Digital adds that only 16% of IT professionals in India hold AI skills.
Is MLOps different from DevOps?
Yes, in one respect: a model can degrade without any code changing, so MLOps adds testing of outputs on top of normal reliability work. The postings pair evals with reliability practices and distributed systems, which shows the two skill sets running side by side. A DevOps background is a reasonable starting point.
Do freshers get MLOps jobs in India?
Rarely under that title. foundit's July 2026 analysis of AI-led fresher jobs put AI Operations at 10% and AI QA and Testing at 5%, while the named applied roles at Sarvam and Rubrik ask for 3 and 8 years. Operations and testing are the entry titles closest to deployment work.
What should an MLOps portfolio contain?
A model served through an API, a written evaluation set with results and a record of failures and fixes. Sarvam's posting says shipping and running something real users depended on matters more than years, and both Sarvam and Observe.AI mention evaluation. Evidence of operation counts for more than a list of tools.
