What is an MBA in media and entertainment, exactly

A general MBA teaches you to run any business. A media and entertainment MBA teaches you to run a business whose product is attention: a film slate, an OTT catalogue, a gaming studio, an advertising account or a creator's brand. The core subjects are the same (finance, marketing, operations, strategy, people management), but the cases and projects come from the industry you plan to join.

The difference shows up in the problems you learn to solve: cash-flowing a film when most of the spend happens before a rupee comes in, deciding what an OTT platform commissions in Tamil versus Hindi, modelling a studio's profit when theatrical, satellite, digital and music rights are sold separately, pricing an influencer campaign.

It is not a film school course. You will not graduate as a cinematographer or an editor. You will graduate as the person who hires them, schedules them, pays them and sells what they make.

What you study in a media MBA: the typical subject map

A two-year media and entertainment MBA usually moves through four layers. IIM Mumbai's version is the example here because its structure is published in full.

LayerWhat it coversWhere it sits in the IIM Mumbai programme
Core managementAccounting, finance, marketing, economics, organisational behaviour, operations, strategyModules 1-3 (18 credits and 180 hours each), described as core management plus media foundations
Media foundationsHow film, television, OTT, gaming, animation, advertising, digital, educational media and podcasts make and spend moneyModules 1-3, taught across both campuses
Industry immersionA supervised project inside a company, applying the first year's learningModule 4, a 60-hour industry internship project
Advanced media strategyContent strategy, production and studio management, OTT programming, media marketing, talent management, media entrepreneurship, business modelsModules 5-7 (18 credits and 180 hours each), with a 6-credit, 60-hour capstone running across them

That adds up to 120 credits and 1,200 learning hours. The segments the programme page names are film, television, OTT, gaming, animation, advertising, digital media, educational media and podcasts.

How to judge a media and entertainment MBA before you pay

Media is a relationship-driven, project-based industry, so the usual MBA checklist is necessary but not sufficient. Five tests matter more here.

  • Industry access, measured in days per week, not guest lectures per year. Ask where classes physically happen and who teaches the craft half.
  • A real internship with a defined credit weight. If it is "encouraged" rather than scheduled and graded, assume most students will not get one.
  • A specialist partner that brings practitioners. Business faculty can teach finance; only people who have produced, programmed or sold content can teach how deals are structured.
  • Exit options. A programme that lets you leave after one year with a recognised diploma protects you if a job offer arrives early.
  • Honest career claims. Be wary of a "highest package" quoted without a batch size and a median. A programme that offers placement support without figures is at least honest; plan your own job search accordingly.

Then add the cost: two years of fees, Mumbai living expenses and forgone salary. The next section goes through the IIM Mumbai option with that in mind.

The IIM Mumbai x Whistling Woods Creative Industries MBA, in detail

IIM Mumbai, formerly NITIE and ranked 6th in the NIRF 2025 Management Rankings, runs its Two-Year MBA (Creative Industries) with Whistling Woods International, and describes it as the first MBA among the IIMs built for the creative industry. Batch 2 starts in January 2027. The chairperson is Dr. Nikhil K Mehta, Professor of Organisational Behaviour and HRM.

The two campuses and the split week

This is the programme's defining feature. Monday and Tuesday are at IIM Mumbai's Powai campus for the management core. Wednesday to Saturday are at Whistling Woods International inside Film City, Goregaon, for the media foundations and strategy subjects. On completion you hold alumni status at both institutions.

Whistling Woods was founded in 2006 by filmmaker Subhash Ghai inside Film City, Goregaon (East), Mumbai. The Hollywood Reporter listed it among the top ten film schools in the world in 2010, 2013 and 2014, per WWI's own About page; no more recent listing was found, so treat it as a historical credential rather than a current ranking.

The practical consequence is a six-day timetable and a commute between Powai and Goregaon, so factor accommodation into your budget.

Who can apply

A bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognised university, with at least 50 percent marks or equivalent CGPA (45 percent for SC/ST/PwD candidates), and no work experience required. That makes it open to a fresh graduate.

You need either a valid CAT, GRE or GMAT score, or you sit the Creative Industries IMAT, IIM Mumbai's own home-proctored online test. The common IMAT date across IIM Mumbai's executive education portfolio is 08 November 2026. Selection then runs through an application with a statement of purpose and resume, the test score, and a Group Discussion and Personal Interview, with final selection on merit. The IMAT guide covers the test format and preparation.

Structure, credits and exit options

Seven modules over two years, 120 credits, 1,200 learning hours. Modules 1 to 3 and 5 to 7 carry 18 credits (180 hours) each; Module 4 is the 60-hour industry internship project; a 6-credit, 60-hour capstone runs across Modules 5 to 7.

Under the NEP 2020 framework there are three exits: a Certificate after one semester, a Post Graduate Diploma after one year, and the MBA after two years. That matters in an industry where a production or platform may offer you a role mid-course.

Fees and payment plans

The total fee is Rs 21,00,000 (Rs 21 lakh), inclusive of all taxes: a Rs 1,00,000 seat-booking amount plus Rs 20,00,000 in programme fees, payable in one go, as two instalments of Rs 10,00,000 or four of Rs 5,00,000. Add a Rs 3,000 non-refundable application fee and a Rs 50,000 refundable caution deposit. The page does not list scholarships, hostel charges or living costs, so budget those separately.

Careers and the placement question

The programme page names its career areas: content strategy, production and studio management, OTT programming, media marketing, talent management and media entrepreneurship, in roles such as media manager, producer, creative director, brand and content strategist, digital marketing manager, business development at media houses and OTT platforms, and media entrepreneur.

On placements, be precise: the FAQ lists "career guidance, mentorship, and placement support" among the programme highlights and publishes no placement statistics, average package or recruiter list. This is a new programme with no multi-year record. Plan to use the internship, the two alumni networks and your own projects, because that is what media employers hire on.

Who this MBA suits, and who should think twice

A worked example. A 23-year-old mass communication graduate in Pune has spent a year assisting on branded-content shoots and keeps being asked to manage budgets and client calls, not cameras. She has no business training and no CAT score.

The Creative Industries MBA fits her: eligible without work experience, the Creative Industries IMAT instead of CAT, Film City four days a week and Powai for the finance and strategy she lacks. Her trade-off is Rs 21 lakh plus two years of Mumbai living costs with no guaranteed job at the end.

The programme suits:

  • Fresh graduates from media, design, arts or commerce backgrounds who want to run content businesses, not only work in them.
  • Early-career professionals in advertising, production, OTT or creator agencies who can afford two years full-time.
  • Next-generation members of production, distribution or exhibition businesses.
  • Would-be media entrepreneurs who want structured training before raising money.

Think twice if:

  • You want to be a director, writer, cinematographer or editor. That is a craft course, not an MBA.
  • You cannot stop working for two years. There is no weekend version of this degree; IIM Mumbai's weekend programmes are on the IIM Mumbai Executive Education hub and compared in the guide to IIM Mumbai's executive programmes.
  • You need a published placement record before committing Rs 21 lakh. There is not one yet.

Other MBA in media and entertainment colleges in India

Several private universities and media institutes run MBA or PGDM programmes in media and entertainment management. Their current fees, seats and formats were not verified on official pages for this article, so they are deliberately not named or priced here. When you compare any of them with the IIM Mumbai option, run the five tests above and check the official page for the 2027 intake, because fees and structures change every cycle. Two features to hold other options against: the degree here is awarded by an IIM, and the craft half is taught inside a working film city.

Frequently asked questions

What is an MBA in media and entertainment?

A two-year management degree in which the core MBA subjects (finance, marketing, operations, strategy, people management) are taught through the business of film, television, OTT, gaming, advertising and digital content. Is there an MBA in media and entertainment at an IIM?

Yes. IIM Mumbai offers a Two-Year MBA (Creative Industries) with Whistling Woods International, described on its site as the first MBA among the IIMs built for the creative industry. It is full-time with 70 seats, and Batch 2 starts in January 2027, with classes Monday-Tuesday in Powai and Wednesday-Saturday at Whistling Woods in Film City, Goregaon.

What are the IIM Mumbai MBA in media and entertainment fees?

Rs 21,00,000 inclusive of all taxes for the two years, made up of a Rs 1,00,000 seat-booking amount and Rs 20,00,000 in programme fees. A valid CAT, GRE or GMAT score is accepted, or you can take the Creative Industries IMAT, IIM Mumbai's home-proctored online test, on the common date of 08 November 2026. Can I leave the programme early with a qualification?

Yes. Under the NEP 2020 framework the programme offers a Certificate after one semester, a Post Graduate Diploma after one year and the MBA degree after two years. The page does not spell out fee treatment for early exits, so ask the admissions office in writing before relying on this.

Does the Creative Industries MBA have placements?

The programme FAQ lists "career guidance, mentorship, and placement support" among its highlights. It publishes no placement percentages, salary figures or recruiter names, and as a new programme it has no long record to show. Treat the 60-hour internship, the IIM Mumbai and Whistling Woods alumni networks and your own portfolio as your main route to a job.
