How strong is machine learning engineer demand in India in 2026

Machine learning engineer demand in India in 2026: Naukri JobSpeak had AI and ML hiring up 20% in September 2026 while overall white-collar hiring rose 2%.

ML engineer demand in India

Machine learning engineer demand in India is still growing in 2026, but more slowly than last year. Naukri's JobSpeak index put AI and ML hiring up 45% for FY26 and up 20% year on year in September 2026, while overall white-collar hiring rose 2% that month. The index counts postings on one portal, so it shows direction rather than jobs filled.

Is machine learning engineer demand in India still growing in 2026?

Yes, on every tracker, with a slowdown that matters. Naukri.com (Info Edge) reported AI and ML hiring growth of 45% for the full financial year FY26, against 8% for overall white-collar hiring. By September 2026 the AI and ML figure had eased to 20%, which is still ten times the 2% recorded for the whole market.

foundit reads the same direction from a different angle. Its Insights Tracker for December 2025 counted 290,256 AI job postings in India in 2025 and described that as low double-digit growth over 2024. It projected about 381,846 AI postings for 2026, a 32% rise. That 2026 number is a projection, and postings are not the same as filled jobs.

LinkedIn data in the Stanford AI Index 2025 adds a longer view. India had the highest relative AI hiring rate ratio in the sample for 2024, at 33.4%, ahead of Brazil at 30.8% and Saudi Arabia at 28.7%. The ratio compares AI-talent hiring with overall hiring, and the report itself notes that LinkedIn has limited coverage of India.

These trackers measure the pace at which employers advertise for AI and ML work, relative to everything else. That pace has cooled from FY26 and has not reversed.

Naukri's monthly JobSpeak releases give the cleanest run of comparable numbers. Each is measured against the same month a year earlier, so the table below sets AI and ML growth beside the overall white-collar reading for the same month.

Month (Naukri JobSpeak)AI and ML hiringOverall white-collar hiringOther reading in the release
March 2026Up 37%Up 9%FY26 full year: AI and ML up 45%, overall up 8%
April 2026Up 32%Up 6%IT sector up 1%
May 2026Up 22%Not statedRoles above Rs 30 LPA up 27%
September 2026Up 20%Up 2%IT and software services down 4%

AI and ML growth stayed above overall hiring in each month shown, and the gap narrowed as the year went on. Meanwhile, IT services hiring went from flat to negative, so the strongest AI and ML demand is increasingly outside classic services work.

The September release makes that point directly. Inside the IT sector, AI and ML hiring still grew 11% year on year while IT hiring as a whole fell 4%. The May figure for roles above Rs 30 LPA is a growth rate in postings, not a statement about what any candidate will be paid.

A single month can mislead, since festive timing, budget cycles and one large employer's campaign can all move an index. Reading March, April, May and September together is safer than quoting any one of them.

Which AI and ML roles are employers posting most?

Naukri's April 2026 release named Machine Learning Engineer, Search Engineer, Data Scientist and Data Platform Engineer as the most in-demand AI and ML roles. The list mixes model-building work with data infrastructure, which matches how production ML is staffed: someone has to move and index the data before anyone trains on it.

foundit's skill breakdown for 2025 shows what sits inside those postings. Machine Learning appeared in 34% of AI postings, growing 29% on 2024. Generative AI and LLMs appeared in 22% with the fastest growth at 58%. Data science and advanced analytics took 18%, NLP 14%, computer vision 12%, MLOps and model deployment 10% (up 42%) and AI engineering 9% (up 35%). Shares overlap because one posting can name several skills, so they should not be added together.

The AI at Work analysis from Naukri, summarised in July 2026, also found that AI mentions in technology job descriptions grew nearly 17-fold, from 0.9% in 2020 to 15% in 2026. Recruiters, it said, increasingly search for titles such as AI Platform Engineer, AI Automation Engineer, Agent Builder and AI Solution Architect. A search for "machine learning engineer" alone therefore misses part of the market.

For a detailed comparison of the neighbouring titles, the post on AI engineer, data scientist and ML engineer roles sets out where each differs.

Which experience bands are hiring, and what does that mean for freshers?

This is the part of the data that deserves the most caution. Naukri's April 2026 release showed AI and ML hiring up 53% for 13 to 16 years of experience, 34% for 8 to 12 years and 33% for 16 or more years, against 16% for freshers. In September 2026 the same pattern held: 54% for 13 to 16 years, 28% for 8 to 12 years and 19% for freshers.

Growth rates reward a small base, so these do not say senior roles are more numerous. foundit's 2025 split of AI postings by experience does. Zero to three years made up 18% of AI postings, growing 28%, while 4 to 6 years held 28%, 7 to 10 years 25%, 11 to 15 years 17% and 15 or more years 12%.

Experience band (foundit, 2025)Share of AI postings
0 to 3 years18%
4 to 6 years28%
7 to 10 years25%
11 to 15 years17%
15 or more years12%

Most openings, then, ask for mid-level experience, and entry roles are a minority that foundit says focus on Python, SQL and ML basics. The wider fresher market is hard. In its July 2026 tracker, foundit said AI-led roles had risen from about 1% of fresher postings to 4% in a year, a fourfold rise, while overall fresher hiring fell 10%. It also found that almost a third of entry-level openings are now internships, contracts or project work.

Among AI-led fresher jobs, foundit's July 2026 analysis put AI/ML Engineer at 28%, Data Analyst at 24%, Prompt Engineer at 12%, AI Operations at 10% and Data Scientist at 9%. Its reading was that employers are buying "builders, not researchers". A separate post on whether AI and ML is oversaturated for freshers covers competition at the entry level in detail.

Where are machine learning engineers hired, by sector and city?

IT software and services held 37% of foundit's AI postings in 2025, growing 32%. Banking, financial services and insurance held 15.8% with the fastest growth of any large sector at 41%, and manufacturing held 6% at 34% growth. So AI work is spreading into sectors that do not call themselves technology firms, although IT services remains the largest single source.

The same tracker put Bengaluru at 26% of AI postings in 2025, Delhi-NCR at 18%, Hyderabad at 12% and Pune at 8%, with Tier-1 cities together holding about 80%. Smaller cities such as Jaipur, Indore, Mysuru, Coimbatore and Ahmedabad grew 30% to 40%, from a small base. A PIB backgrounder of February 2026, citing the World Bank, found 5.8% of India's white-collar listings in 2025 required AI expertise, led by Bangalore with an 11% share of AI jobs.

City rankings move from month to month. Naukri's May 2026 release had Hyderabad leading AI hiring growth at 44%, then Delhi NCR at 34% and Chennai at 31%, whereas its March release had Kolkata first. The city and sector breakdown of AI jobs tracks that churn, and the post on capability centres covers the employers that Zinnov and Nasscom counted at 2,117 in India for FY2026.

Another reading comes from Indeed Hiring Lab, which found that 11.7% of Indian postings on Indeed mentioned artificial intelligence in September 2025, up from 8.2% a year earlier. By occupation, 39% of data and analytics postings and 23% of software development postings mentioned it. AI has become a skill inside many roles, and an ML engineer title is only one doorway into it. Indeed notes that its India data skews towards tech, management and sales.

How has generative AI changed the ML engineer job description?

The skill mix has shifted towards applying models rather than only training them. foundit's 58% growth for generative AI and LLM skills, against 29% for classical machine learning, is the clearest number. Named employers describe the same turn in their own words. Sarvam's Agent Engineer posting of 20 August 2026 asks for serious work with LLMs and agents, including context engineering, tool use and structured outputs, alongside strong Python and evals that separate signal from noise.

Observe.AI's AI Agent Engineer posting in Hyderabad, dated 23 September 2026, is explicit that the role is "not building foundational AI models". It covers prompt design, API integrations and evaluation frameworks for enterprise voice and chat agents. The deep end of the field still exists too: Sarvam's training infrastructure role from 7 October 2026 asks for three or more years of distributed training experience and GPU knowledge.

The practical effect is that a machine learning engineer posting in 2026 may mean three different jobs. One builds classical models, one ships LLM features and one runs training infrastructure. The post on deployment skills in postings covers the production layer that all three rely on, and the guide to moving from software engineering into ML explains which lane suits which background.

Will machine learning jobs still exist in 2030?

The forward-looking figures come from a global employer survey, not an Indian forecast. The World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025, drawing on over 1,000 employers, expects 170 million jobs to be created and 92 million displaced worldwide between 2025 and 2030, a net gain of 78 million. It names AI and Machine Learning Specialists among the fastest-growing roles for India over that period, and among the fastest-growing technology roles globally, in percentage terms. Fast percentage growth starts from a small base, so that phrase does not mean the largest.

In the United States, the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects data scientist employment to grow 35% from 2025 to 2035. That is American data and says nothing directly about Indian hiring. It does show that statistical agencies as well as portals and consultancies expect such work to keep expanding.

Doubt about programming itself sits better with the postings than the headlines. The Sarvam and Rubrik roles ask for strong Python or software engineering as a base. Tools change, and Sarvam's posting says what matters more than years is having shipped something real users depended on. An earlier piece on the AI job market in India covers the wider picture, and a roadmap to becoming a machine learning engineer covers the learning sequence.

Coming from a non-computing degree, such as mechanical engineering, adds a further consideration. Mid-level experience dominates postings, so after such a switch the first role may be an adjacent data or software job rather than a pure ML engineer title.

Where does a structured programme fit?

Some candidates prefer a taught sequence to self-study. Certification in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning is an online programme from Vishlesan i-Hub, IIT Patna, delivered on Masai's online platform, that covers Python, machine learning, deep learning, generative AI and LLMs, agentic systems and deploying models to production. Its modules include core programming and analytical foundations, predictive modelling, and production deployment with a capstone.

A certificate does not replace work samples, and postings reward demonstrated projects and experience.

Frequently asked questions

Is machine learning engineer a good career in India in 2026?

The postings data supports a qualified yes. Naukri's JobSpeak recorded AI and ML hiring up 20% in September 2026 against 2% for white-collar hiring overall. The qualification is that most AI postings ask for mid-level experience, and foundit found only 18% of 2025 AI postings aimed at 0 to 3 years of experience.

How many AI and ML jobs does India have?

foundit counted 290,256 AI job postings in 2025 and projected about 381,846 for 2026, while the World Bank figure cited by PIB had 5.8% of white-collar listings requiring AI expertise in 2025. Those are postings and shares of listings, not headcount.

What does a machine learning engineer earn in India?

As market data only: Indeed India's page, updated on 14 October 2026, reported an average base salary of Rs 11,21,882 a year, typically between Rs 6,19,408 and Rs 20,31,970, from 50 posted salaries over 36 months. The sample is small and pay varies widely by employer, city and experience.

Is ML engineer demand stronger in IT services or elsewhere?

Elsewhere, on Naukri's September 2026 data. IT and software services hiring fell 4% that month, yet AI and ML hiring inside the IT sector grew 11%. foundit's 2025 data showed IT services as the largest source of AI postings at 37%, while banking, financial services and insurance grew fastest at 41%.

Can a fresher get a machine learning engineer job in India?

Fresher AI and ML hiring did grow, by 19% in Naukri's September 2026 release. It grows from a small base, however, and foundit found overall fresher hiring down 10% in the year to July 2026. In foundit's July 2026 mix of AI-led fresher jobs, AI/ML Engineer was the largest single title at 28%, ahead of Data Analyst at 24%, though AI-led roles were only about 4% of fresher postings.
