Is business analytics a good career in India in 2026?

Is business analytics a good career in India in 2026? WEF projects 54% growth for data analysts by 2030, but Indeed postings were 19.8% lower a year on.

Is business analytics worth it?

Business analytics is a sound career choice in India in 2026 for freshers who build real skills, though entry-level competition is real. The World Economic Forum's India profile projects net growth of 54% for data analysts and scientists and 17% for business intelligence analysts from 2025 to 2030, yet Indeed Hiring Lab found Indian postings 19.8% below a year earlier in October 2025.

What does the 2026 scorecard say about business analytics?

The table collects the signals a fresher can check, each with its publisher and period. The last column is a plain-language reading of each row.

WEF's figures need careful reading. They are employer-survey projections of net growth against current employment in each role, so a large percentage off a small base is not a large number of vacancies. In the same report, WEF ranks big data specialists first among the fastest-growing jobs worldwide, with data analysts and scientists also in the top 15.

In the United States, the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment of management analysts, a consulting-style occupation, to grow 10% from 2025 to 2035, adding 109,200 jobs. It is a different country and a different job title, so it is context only.

Is the analyst market really that bad for freshers?

The soft patch is real. Indeed Hiring Lab found Indian postings on Indeed 19.8% lower than a year earlier in October 2025, with banking and finance postings down 25.6% and retail down 16.7% over the three months to October 2025. Indeed's India data skews towards tech, management and sales, and that reading predates the 2026 trackers.

Naukri's 2026 readings are mixed. IT hiring was down 7% year on year in May 2026 and up 11% in August, and IT and software services were down 4% in September, when overall hiring rose 2%. NASSCOM's Strategic Review 2026 expects technology spending to stay range-bound at 5 to 7% in FY27, with hiring shifting from volume to skill mix.

A shift from volume to skill mix leaves little room for applicants with no visible work. Employers say the same from their side: in the NASSCOM and Indeed report of May 2026, 58% cited low applicant volume as a key hiring challenge and 50% cited skills mismatch. LinkedIn research reported by Storyboard18 in February 2026 said 74% of recruiters in India had difficulty finding qualified talent.

The data therefore reads as a market that is hard on freshers without evidence of skill and less hard on those who can show it. That is a reading of the numbers, not a measured fresher outcome. A longer take on the saturation question is in is data analytics saturated in 2026, and the entry route is laid out in how to become a business analyst with no experience.

Where did hiring grow and where did it fall in 2025 and 2026?

NASSCOM's Strategic Review 2026 expects India's tech sector to pass USD 315 bn in FY26, with direct employment of about 6 mn, up 2.3% for a net addition of 135,000. Zinnov and NASSCOM counted 2,117 global capability centres in FY2026, employing 2.36 million people. These totals show the size of the sector across all roles, not analyst demand.

Sector readings diverge. Naukri JobSpeak showed insurance up 28% in February 2026 and 19% in May, banking down 15% in May and up 10% in August, and merchandising, retail and e-commerce roles up 18% in September. Commerce-led entry is covered in business analyst after BCom.

AI-related roles pulled ahead. Naukri recorded AI and ML roles up 20% in September 2026, and CXOToday reported that 63% of employers in the NASSCOM and Indeed study saw a year-on-year rise in AI-related hiring, led by BFSI and telecommunications. Both are shares or growth rates, not counts of jobs.

Will AI take the entry-level work? What the adoption data shows

NASSCOM's October 2026 survey of 200 India-headquartered enterprises found 95% had implemented agentic AI and 98% had dedicated AI budgets, but fewer had reached production-grade deployment. Of the enterprises surveyed, 78% confine agentic action to structured tasks with clearly defined end points, and the majority require human approval before any agentic action.

Global data points the same way. Stanford's AI Index 2026, drawing on a McKinsey survey for 2025, found 88% of organisations using AI in at least one business function, up from 78% in 2024. For AI agents, a majority of respondents reported no use at all in most functions, and scaled use was in single digits for nearly all of them.

Analysts themselves are cautiously positive. IIBA's 2026 survey found 69% saying AI is having a positive effect on their careers, down from 74% in 2025, with 5% reporting a negative view. The most common uses were drafting and formatting (28%), communication and documentation (25%) and idea generation or problem-solving (22%).

The task mix is changing, and roles are being redefined: 86% of employers in the NASSCOM and Indeed report said AI had affected job roles, and 35% saw significant redefinition. Indeed's data, as reported by IANS in March 2026, found 40% of data and analytics postings referencing AI in January 2026, against 29% for software development. That points towards analysts who can work with AI tools. How the role progresses as tasks change is covered in the business analyst career path in India.

Is analytics still an option after a career gap or a government exam cycle?

Take a hypothetical graduate who spent two years on a government exam cycle and now wants to restart in analytics. A gap of that kind is explained best by what was learned and built during it, so the portfolio does the talking.

What the data does show is which lever employers say they weigh. In the NASSCOM and Indeed report, 40% preferred demonstrable AI skills or certifications over a degree. CXOToday reported that 32% weigh skills, certifications and degrees equally, and WEF found 30% of employers operating in India expecting to drop degree requirements. Recent, dated project work gives a resume something to show for the gap years.

LinkedIn research reported by Storyboard18 found 38% of Indian job seekers feeling unprepared for how quickly technology is reshaping required skills.

How should a fresher decide, and where does a business analytics programme fit?

A cheap test comes first. Spend a few weeks on Excel and SQL, build one small project, and see whether the work holds interest. Each of those skills carries over to other analytics roles, so little is lost if the fit is poor.

A computer science student weighing AI and ML against analytics faces overlapping routes. Naukri showed AI and ML roles up 20% in September 2026, WEF's India profile projects 176% net growth for AI and ML specialists against 54% for data analysts and scientists, and NASSCOM's 2025 survey says campus hires are expected to bring both skill sets. SQL and Python serve either route, so starting there keeps both open.

For freshers who want a taught route, Masai's Business Analytics with AI certification programme is a certification programme in business analytics with AI, offered in collaboration with MICA and taught live online. It covers Excel, SQL, Python, Power BI, statistics and applied machine learning. Whether a certification is worth the effort is weighed in is a business analytics certification worth it.

Frequently asked questions

Is business analysis a good career?

The evidence leans positive. IIBA's 2026 survey of 2,120 professionals found 81% saying business analysis is formally recognised in their organisation, and 69% saying AI is positively affecting their careers. The sample is global and self-selected, so it shows how practitioners see the profession, not how many Indian openings exist.

What are the scope and salary of business analytics in India in 2026?

Scope follows the sector readings above. For pay, Indeed India's average base salary for business analysts was Rs 8,90,431 a year as of 16 October 2026, from 631 salaries. AmbitionBox's 2026 data shows Rs 7.3 lakh at 1 to 3 years, Rs 9.2 lakh at 3 to 6 years and Rs 14.4 lakh at 9 to 12 years. These are self-reported market averages, not fresher figures.

Is a BBA in business analytics a good course?

Employers weigh demonstrable skills over degree titles: 40% preferred skills or certifications over a degree in the NASSCOM and Indeed report of May 2026, and 32% weigh them equally with degrees, per CXOToday. What a BBA adds depends on whether it produces Excel, SQL, dashboard and project skills.

Should a fresher choose business analytics or AI and machine learning?

The choice can wait. Naukri showed AI and ML roles up 20% in September 2026 against 2% for overall hiring, while WEF projects 54% growth for data analysts and scientists in India. SQL and Python come first in both routes, so a fresher can start with them and decide once a first project reveals which work is more engaging.

Is a certification enough to start in business analytics?

A certification is one signal, not a sufficient one. IIBA's 2026 survey found that 94% of certified respondents would recommend certification, a figure from a body that sells certifications. In the NASSCOM and Indeed report, 40% of employers preferred demonstrable skills or certifications over a degree, so a certificate helps most when it sits beside projects.
