Is AI/ML oversaturated for freshers in India in 2026

Is AI/ML oversaturated for freshers in India? Naukri's September 2026 data has fresher AI/ML hiring up 19% against 54% for 13 to 16 years of experience.

Is AI oversaturated for freshers

AI and ML do not look oversaturated on the hiring numbers, but the entry point is narrow and competitive. Naukri's September 2026 JobSpeak had fresher AI/ML hiring up 19% year on year, while AI/ML hiring for 13 to 16 years of experience rose 54%. foundit found AI-led roles grew from about 1% to 4% of fresher postings in a year, while overall fresher hiring fell 10%.

What would oversaturated mean, and how can it be measured?

A field is oversaturated when the number of people competing for entry roles grows faster than the number of roles on offer.

What can be measured is the demand side: how many postings exist and how fast they grow at each experience level, plus how thin the supply of AI skills is among people already working. That gives a partial picture. It cannot prove or rule out saturation on its own.

Are fresher AI and ML postings growing or shrinking?

Growing, from a small base. Naukri's JobSpeak for April 2026 had fresher AI/ML hiring up 16% year on year, and its September 2026 release had it up 19%. Over the same period Naukri's overall AI/ML index grew 32% in April and 20% in September, against overall white-collar hiring growth of 6% and 2%.

foundit's July 2026 tracker adds the scale. AI-led roles rose from about 1% of fresher postings to 4% in a year, a fourfold rise. Four per cent is still a small slice of the fresher market, which is why a fourfold rise does not translate into abundant openings. Among AI-led fresher jobs, foundit's mix was AI/ML Engineer 28%, Data Analyst 24%, Prompt Engineer 12%, AI Operations 10%, Data Scientist 9%, GenAI Developer 7% and AI QA and Testing 5%.

For all of 2025, foundit counted 290,256 AI job postings in India and described that as low double-digit growth over 2024. It projects about 381,846 in 2026, a 32% increase. The 2026 figure is a projection, and postings are not the same as filled jobs.

Why are senior roles growing faster than entry roles?

The tracker data is consistent across months. In April 2026 Naukri's AI/ML hiring grew 53% for 13 to 16 years of experience, 34% for 8 to 12 years and 33% for 16+ years, against 16% for freshers. In September 2026 the figures were 54% for 13 to 16 years, 28% for 8 to 12 years and 19% for freshers.

Naukri's AI at Work report, summarised on 16 July 2026, says the same: growth in AI hiring is strongest in senior bands and higher salary brackets, with 13 to 16 years up 39% and 16+ years up 35%.

Percentages from different bases cannot be compared as if they were equal numbers of jobs. foundit's 2025 experience split of AI postings gives a sense of the mix: 18% for 0 to 3 years (growing 28%), 28% for 4 to 6 years, 25% for 7 to 10 years, 17% for 11 to 15 years and 12% for 15+ years. Most AI postings in 2025 asked for mid-level experience, so roles pitched at entry level were under a fifth of the total.

How few professionals actually hold AI skills?

On the supply side, fewer than might be expected. TeamLease Digital's Digital Skills and Salary Primer FY2026-27, built on 37,000 tech and digital roles across 18 cities, says only 16% of IT professionals in India hold AI skills. It also says 1 in 3 organisations has reached the AI maturity level where pay starts to rise sharply.

Naukri's AI at Work survey shows interest is high: 79% of professionals said they are upskilling in AI or plan to start soon, and 77% use AI at work at least sometimes, though only 35% say their employer actively provides AI training.

Indeed Hiring Lab found that 11.7% of Indian job postings on Indeed in September 2025 mentioned artificial intelligence, up from 8.2% a year earlier, and that India ranked second only to Singapore among Indeed markets for AI mentions. Indeed notes its India data leans towards technology, management and sales, so this describes one platform.

What did the wider fresher market do in the same year?

It shrank, on foundit's measure. The July 2026 tracker says overall fresher hiring fell 10% and white-collar hiring fell 12% in the year to July 2026. That makes the 1% to 4% rise for AI-led roles a shift within a smaller pool, not growth in an expanding one.

Naukri's reading is less gloomy at the top line. Its September 2026 JobSpeak had overall white-collar hiring up 2%, with the JobSpeak Index at 3,053 against 3,002 a year earlier, and IT and software services hiring down 4%. The two trackers measure different postings, so they can disagree.

Neither tracker attributes the shrinkage to AI. A balanced look at whether AI can replace junior developers takes up that question, and a post on AI jobs by city and sector shows where the postings are.

What separates a hired fresher from the crowd?

The postings and trackers point to a few signals. foundit says employers in its fresher AI data are buying builders rather than researchers, and that entry roles focus on Python, SQL and machine learning basics. Almost a third of entry-level openings are now internships, contracts or project work, up from about one in eight two years earlier, so the first role is often a trial.

Sarvam AI's Agent Engineer posting, dated 20 August 2026, says that having shipped and run something real users depended on matters more than years of experience. A project that works end to end, with data, a model, an evaluation and a deployed endpoint, is the nearest thing a fresher has to that evidence.

foundit's July 2026 tracker puts about two-thirds of entry-level roles at under Rs 5 LPA. Fresher bands are Rs 3 to 5 LPA (41%), Rs 5 to 8 LPA (23%), Rs 8 to 12 LPA (9%) and above Rs 12 LPA (3%), with premium roles at Rs 8 LPA and above at 12% of fresher hiring, led by AI, data science, cybersecurity, semiconductor and product-engineering roles. That is across all fresher roles, not AI alone.

TeamLease Digital's primer adds that AI-Core roles, which build and own intelligent systems, start at 2.5 to 3 times the pay of AI-Support roles that keep AI-enabled operations running.

So is it worth starting in 2026?

On the evidence, it is a competitive entry point with real demand behind it, not a closed field. Fresher AI/ML postings are growing in both Naukri releases, the supply of AI skills among IT professionals is thin on TeamLease Digital's count, and the World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025 lists AI and Machine Learning Specialists among India's projected fastest-growing roles for 2025 to 2030. That ranking is in percentage terms, starting from a small base, not a statement about the largest number of jobs.

Against that, the fresher base is small, senior postings are growing faster and almost a third of entry openings are internships, contracts or project work. A fresher should expect a longer search than the headline growth rates imply, and should plan for adjacent roles such as data analyst, which foundit has at 24% of AI-led fresher jobs. A guide to entry-level machine learning jobs lists those roles, and a post on whether a master's in AI/ML is worth it addresses the degree question.

The Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Certification Program is an online programme from E&ICT Academy, IIT Roorkee, run with Masai as the implementation partner, with live sessions and an optional campus immersion, covering Python, data handling, machine learning, generative AI, LLMs and a capstone project. It is one structured way to build the base the postings ask for, and no certificate substitutes for finished projects.

Frequently asked questions

Is machine learning oversaturated in India?

Demand data does not point to saturation: Naukri's AI/ML hiring index was up 20% in September 2026 while overall white-collar hiring grew 2%, and only 16% of IT professionals hold AI skills, per TeamLease Digital. Entry-level competition exists, but the field is not shrinking.

Are AI and ML jobs available for freshers in India?

Yes, in limited numbers. foundit's July 2026 tracker has AI-led roles at about 4% of fresher postings, up from about 1% a year earlier. AI/ML Engineer is 28% of those AI-led fresher jobs. Naukri's September 2026 data has fresher AI/ML hiring up 19%, though growth for 13 to 16 years of experience was 54%.

Is it too late to learn AI in 2026?

Not on the postings data. foundit projects about 381,846 AI job postings in India in 2026, a 32% rise on 2025. What has changed is the bar: entry roles ask for Python, SQL and machine learning basics, and almost a third of entry openings are internships, contracts or project work.

Why do AI/ML postings ask for so much experience?

Most do. foundit's 2025 split shows only 18% of AI postings at 0 to 3 years of experience, with 28% at 4 to 6 years and 25% at 7 to 10 years. Naukri's AI at Work report says hiring growth is strongest in senior bands. Named postings point the same way: Sarvam AI's Agent Engineer role, dated 20 August 2026, hires from 3+ years of experience.

Will AI take over entry-level jobs before a fresher is hired?

Entry roles are fewer, but they are not disappearing. foundit shows overall fresher hiring down 10% in the year to July 2026 while AI-led fresher roles quadrupled from a small base. The figures support preparing for a market where entry roles are fewer and more skill-specific, not for a market where they have disappeared.
