IMAT 2026 (IIM Mumbai Admission Test): Exam Date, Who Can Take It, and How to Prepare
What IMAT is, who can take it on 08 November 2026, how it compares with CAT, GMAT and GRE, and how to prepare.
IMAT 2026 (IIM Mumbai Admission Test): Exam Date, Who Can Take It, and How to Prepare
IMAT is the IIM Mumbai Admission Test, an online, home-proctored entrance test that IIM Mumbai's executive education programmes accept in place of CAT, GMAT or GRE. The next IMAT for the January 2027 batches is on 08 November 2026, with interviews on 25 to 27 November and results on 01 December 2026. You need a bachelor's degree and, for most programmes, work experience.
The longer answer matters because IIM Mumbai has published less about IMAT than most applicants assume, and much of what circulates online is guesswork presented as a syllabus. This guide separates official facts from third-party inference, sets out the timeline, compares IMAT with CAT, GMAT and GRE for this cycle, and gives you a preparation plan that does not depend on a syllabus nobody has seen.

What IMAT is, and which programmes use it
IIM Mumbai (formerly NITIE, ranked 6th in the NIRF 2025 Management Rankings) runs five executive education programmes for the January 2027 batch, and every one lists IMAT as an entry route, so a professional who never sat CAT, or whose score has expired, need not wait a year for the next CAT cycle.
- MBA-PGPM, the two-year weekend MBA: IMAT or a valid CAT, GMAT or GRE score, then a personal interview. Eligibility is graduation in any discipline plus at least 2 years of relevant post-graduation work experience.
- Executive MBA in Wealth Management: same route and the same 2-year minimum, with banking and wealth-management experience preferred. 50 seats.
- PG Program for Executives in Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management: a qualifying IMAT score or a CAT, GMAT or GRE score from June 2024 onwards, at least 1 year of experience, 50 percent marks in graduation (45 percent for SC, ST and PwD) and a Statement of Purpose describing your business idea.
- PG Program in Public Policy Management: IMAT qualification or a CAT, GMAT or GRE score obtained within the last 5 years, at least 5 years of work experience and 50 percent marks. The award is a Post Graduate Diploma in Public Policy Management, not an MBA.
- Two-Year MBA (Creative Industries): a valid CAT, GRE or GMAT score or the Creative Industries IMAT, then a group discussion and personal interview. No work experience is required; the bar is 50 percent marks in graduation (45 percent for SC, ST and PwD). 70 seats.
One clarification: IIM Mumbai also runs a separate IMAT cycle for its online MBA-BPGP, with a test date of 20 September 2026. This guide concerns only the 08 November 2026 IMAT for the programmes on the IIM Mumbai Executive Education site.
IMAT 2026 timeline for the January 2027 batch
The five programmes share one admission calendar. Only the first week of classes differs.
| Stage | Date |
|---|---|
| Application (online form, Rs 3,000 fee, documents; SOP for the entrepreneurship programme) | Open now |
| IMAT, online and home-proctored | 08 November 2026 |
| Personal interview, if shortlisted | 25 to 27 November 2026 |
| Tentative result | 01 December 2026 |
| Secure your seat with Rs 1,00,000 | 2 to 11 December 2026 |
| Full fee payment (MBA-PGPM and Wealth Management EMBA) | 20 December 2026 |
| Classes begin | January 2027; entrepreneurship and public policy online classes start 16 January 2027 after orientation on 14 and 15 January |
Two notes. The Creative Industries page lists its result date as "to be announced" and does not print the IMAT date; the 08 November date comes from the hub. And the gap between test and interview is just over two weeks, so interview preparation runs alongside test preparation, not after it.
What IIM Mumbai has published about the IMAT format, and what it has not
This is the section most IMAT articles get wrong, so it is worth being blunt. As of 29 October 2026, the official executive education pages describe IMAT only as an online, home-proctored test that serves as an alternative to CAT, GMAT and GRE and is followed by a personal interview. They do not publish a section list, a question count, a marking scheme, a duration or a syllabus.
Careers360 has described IMAT as a 100-mark test of 90 to 120 minutes with a CAT-like pattern covering quantitative ability, verbal ability and reading comprehension, and data interpretation and logical reasoning. Treat that as the publisher's inference, not an official pattern. If IIM Mumbai publishes a format closer to the date, it will appear on the programme pages and overrides anything you read elsewhere, including this article.
IMAT vs CAT, GMAT and GRE for this cycle
If you hold a score, check whether it falls inside the window your programme accepts. If not, the calendar decides for you.
| Test | Conducted by | Date relevant to this cycle | Score validity | Usable for the January 2027 batch? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IMAT | IIM Mumbai | 08 November 2026 | Used directly in this cycle | Yes; this is the cycle it is built for |
| CAT 2026 | IIM Indore | 29 November 2026, three slots; registration closed 22 September 2026 (fee payment extended to 24 September) | One year for regular IIM admissions; IIM Mumbai's public policy page accepts scores from the last 5 years and the entrepreneurship page from June 2024 onwards | Only an earlier CAT score. CAT 2026 results are not officially announced; outlets expect them between late December 2026 and the second week of January 2027, after IIM Mumbai's 01 December result date |
| GMAT (Focus Edition) | GMAC | Year-round | 5 years from the test date | Yes, if the score is within the window and in hand before the interview round |
| GRE General Test | ETS | Year-round | 5 years from the test date | Yes, on the same condition |
Three things follow. A candidate with no existing score cannot use CAT 2026 for the January 2027 batch, because registration has closed and the result is expected after IIM Mumbai's result date. GMAT and GRE remain possible, but a GMAT costs US$275 at a test centre or US$300 online before Indian taxes and the GRE costs US$249 outside the United States from 01 August 2026, so for most applicants the Rs 3,000 application and the home-proctored IMAT is the cheaper, faster route. And if you took CAT in 2024 or 2025, check the exact window on your programme page before assuming it has lapsed. IIM Mumbai is not the only IIM with an institute test: IIM Kozhikode's EPGP at Kochi uses an Executive Management Aptitude Test (EMAT), and Executive MBA without CAT covers the others.
How selection works after the test
Only one of the five programmes publishes a weighting. The entrepreneurship programme scores applicants out of 100: CAT, GMAT, GRE or IMAT score 40; Class X 5; Class XII 5; graduation 10; relevant entrepreneurial, family business, R&D or startup experience 10; personal interview 30. The interview is online.
Read that as a guide to the others, with caution: the test is the largest component but not a majority, and the interview is nearly as heavy. The other programmes do not publish weights, so assume only that the interview matters everywhere. The Creative Industries programme adds a group discussion and asks for a statement of purpose and a resume.
A realistic IMAT preparation plan
Because the syllabus is unpublished, build your preparation on the aptitude areas that every management entrance test in India measures: quantitative ability, verbal ability and reading comprehension, data interpretation, and logical reasoning. These are not the IMAT syllabus. They are the common ground of CAT, GMAT, GRE and institute tests such as EMAT, which is the best available basis for a test whose format has not been announced.
If you are reading this close to the 08 November 2026 test, you may have under two weeks. Here is how to use them around a full-time job.
Days 1 to 3: diagnose. Take one full-length CAT-style mock in exam conditions to find which of the four areas costs you the most time per correct answer. Most working professionals find arithmetic and reading speed have decayed and logic has not.
Days 4 to 9: repair the weakest two areas. Quantitative: arithmetic (percentages, ratios, averages, time and work, interest), basic algebra and number properties. Verbal: two long business articles a day, summarised in three lines, plus one reading comprehension set. Data interpretation: read tables and charts quickly and estimate rather than calculate. Logical reasoning: one arrangement or puzzle set daily.
Days 10 to 12: simulate the home-proctored format. Do two timed mocks on the device and connection you will use, at a clear desk with a working webcam and microphone. Technical failures are a bigger test-day risk than any single question.
Days 13 and 14: interview preparation. Write down why this programme and why now, what you have done in your current role that you can discuss for ten minutes, and what you will do with the degree or diploma. Entrepreneurship applicants should be able to pitch their SOP idea in three minutes without slides.
A mini-scenario: a 31-year-old operations manager in Chennai with seven years' experience and no CAT score registers for the MBA-ePGPM on 30 October and takes a diagnostic mock that evening. Arithmetic is slow, reading is fine. She does 45 minutes of arithmetic and one data interpretation set each weekday morning, a full mock on each of the two weekends before the test, and a webcam check the day before. She tests on 08 November, drafts interview answers the following week, and if selected on 01 December pays Rs 1,00,000 by 11 December and the balance of the Rs 14,50,000 outreach-centre fee by 20 December. The MBA-PGPM weekend MBA guide covers what she would be signing up for.
Trade-offs to weigh before you register
IMAT removes the entrance-test barrier, not the others. The programmes cost between Rs 6,00,000 and Rs 21,00,000, take one or two years of weekends or evenings, and the two weekend MBAs require 75 percent attendance with grade penalties below that. The Wealth Management EMBA states that placement support is not offered; the MBA-PGPM, entrepreneurship and public policy pages make no placement claims; and the Creative Industries page mentions career guidance, mentorship and placement support without figures. The IIM Mumbai executive MBA overview lays out every programme's fee and format so you can decide which application is worth the Rs 3,000.
Frequently asked questions
What is the IMAT IIM Mumbai exam date in 2026?
The IMAT for IIM Mumbai's executive education programmes is on 08 November 2026. It is online and home-proctored. Shortlisted candidates are interviewed on 25 to 27 November 2026, the tentative result is on 01 December 2026, and seats are secured between 2 and 11 December 2026 for the January 2027 batch. A separate IMAT cycle for the online MBA-BPGP was held on 20 September 2026.
Is CAT required for admission to IIM Mumbai's executive programmes?
No. All five programmes accept IMAT as an alternative to CAT, GMAT and GRE. If you hold a valid score you can submit it instead; the public policy page accepts scores from the last five years and the entrepreneurship page from June 2024 onwards. If you have no score, IMAT is the route for the January 2027 batch, because CAT 2026 results are expected only after IIM Mumbai's result date.
What is the IMAT syllabus and exam pattern?
IIM Mumbai has not published an IMAT syllabus, duration, question count or marking scheme on its executive education pages as of 29 October 2026. Careers360 describes a 100-mark, 90 to 120 minute, CAT-like test across quantitative ability, verbal ability and reading comprehension, and data interpretation and logical reasoning, but that is the publisher's inference. Prepare on those general aptitude areas and watch the official pages.
How much does IMAT cost?
The programme pages list a Rs 3,000 application fee per programme, non-refundable, non-adjustable and separate from the programme fee. They do not list a separate IMAT test fee. If you apply to more than one programme, expect to pay the application fee for each. The Rs 1,00,000 seat-securing amount is payable only after you are offered admission.
Who is eligible to take IMAT?
Eligibility is set by the programme, not the test. The MBA-PGPM and the Wealth Management EMBA need a bachelor's degree in any discipline and at least 2 years of post-graduation work experience. The entrepreneurship programme needs 1 year of experience and 50 percent marks, the public policy programme 5 years and 50 percent marks, and the Creative Industries MBA needs 50 percent marks but no work experience.
Next step
Choose your programme on the IIM Mumbai Executive Education site, complete the application with the Rs 3,000 fee, and block 08 November 2026 for the home-proctored IMAT, unless you already hold a CAT, GMAT or GRE score within the window your programme accepts.
