How to become a forward deployed engineer early in your career
How to become a forward deployed engineer: Bloomberry found 3 to 5 years the most common bar, in 60% of postings, so early-career engineers need a record.
Becoming a forward deployed engineer usually means first working as a software, data or solutions engineer and then moving toward customer-facing build work. Bloomberry's analysis of postings that state experience (mostly United States), updated 25 January 2026, found 3 to 5 years in 60% and 0 to 2 years in 12%. Entry points exist, but they are narrower than the title's popularity suggests.
What experience do forward deployed engineer postings ask for, and where are the exceptions?
Most ask for several years. The table sets out the stated bars in six postings and one analysis, each with its own date.
| Source | Experience bar stated | What else it asks |
|---|---|---|
| Cursor, FDE India (28 September 2026) | No minimum stated | Strong Python and TypeScript or JavaScript, experience owning AI-native workflows in production |
| Anthropic, FDE London (14 September 2026) | 4+ years | A technical customer-facing role, production LLM experience, strong Python |
| OpenAI, FDE San Francisco (11 September 2026) | 5+ years | Engineering or technical deployment experience including customer-facing work |
| DevRev, FDE Delhi NCR (9 October 2026) | 5+ years | Software development, systems integration or platform engineering |
| Databricks, Senior FDE Bengaluru (6 October 2026) | 6+ years | Data engineering, AI and data platforms, MLOps |
| Palantir, new-graduate and internship FDSE roles (careers page, 30 October 2026) | Entry level | Tracks in New York, London, Chicago, Seoul and Paris, none in India |
| Bloomberry analysis, updated 25 January 2026 | 0 to 2 years 12%, 3 to 5 years 60%, 6 to 8 years 20%, 9+ years 8% | Postings that state experience, mostly from the United States |
At AI labs and platform companies the bar is 4 to 6+ years, and Bloomberry's distribution points the same way. Databricks' posting is a senior India role, not an entry route.
Cursor's India posting states no minimum, but it expects experience owning AI-native workflows in production, which is a track record, not a degree. Palantir, which says it pioneered the role, lists new-graduate and internship FDE tracks, but its careers page on 30 October 2026 shows none located in India. HackerRank's Bengaluru FDE posting treats solutions or sales engineering experience as a plus and lists no years. Sarvam AI's Deployment Strategist posting of 11 August 2026 gives no experience bar either.
Neighbouring applied-AI roles in India sometimes set a lower bar. Sarvam's Agent Engineer posting of 20 August 2026 asks for 3+ years and says that having shipped and run something real users depended on matters more than years. That sentence is the clearest statement in these postings of what substitutes for tenure.
Which starting roles lead into forward deployed engineer work?
The experience lines in the postings point toward three starting points: software engineering with a backend or integration focus, data and platform engineering, and technical customer-facing work such as solutions engineering. DevRev lists software development, systems integration and platform engineering. Databricks lists data engineering and AI and data platforms. Anthropic and OpenAI both count technical customer-facing experience, and MongoDB asks for backend engineering.
Internal moves are a real route. Salesforce said on 18 March 2026 that it launched a six-week FDE onboarding programme in September 2025, with two weeks of technical training and four weeks on the job, and that about 40% to 50% of FDE movement at the company is internal. Salesforce also said it tripled its own FDE team in six months. That is one employer's account, but it shows engineers moving into FDE seats from inside the company.
What should an engineer build and own in the first two years?
The postings reward ownership of something that ran in production, and the same kinds of ownership recur across them.
Cursor lists tracing, evals and metrics among the things FDEs own, which points to a service with real users or callers that its owner can observe and explain. On cloud, Databricks asks for two or more of AWS, Azure and GCP, plus CI/CD, and Bloomberry found AWS in 32% of postings, GCP in 22% and Azure in 18%. A deployment that someone else can reach is the evidence.
On the AI side, Anthropic's London FDE posting asks for production LLM experience covering prompt engineering, agent development and evaluation frameworks. In Bloomberry's data, AI agents appeared in 35% of postings and LLM experience in 31%. A retrieval or agent project that has an evaluation set and a record of failures answers this directly. The earlier post on agentic AI projects for beginners lists starting points.
Customer contact is the one most engineers skip. Any chance to join a client call, write a requirements note, run a demo or hand a system over to another team counts. DevRev describes its FDE role as 80% customer-facing, so the habit is worth building early.
How the FDE role compares with neighbouring titles is covered in the post on forward deployed engineer vs solutions engineer, and the role itself is explained in the post on what a forward deployed engineer does.
Is a degree needed to become a forward deployed engineer?
Degrees are expected and equivalents are accepted in some places. Anthropic's posting lists a Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. DevRev's Delhi NCR posting asks for a Bachelor's or Master's degree in computer science, engineering or a related technical field. Palantir's posting names computer science, mathematics, software engineering, physics and data science as preferred fields.
The experience lines carry more weight than the degree lines. In the table above, the bars are stated in years of work. Certifications appear rarely: Databricks lists its own certification among what it looks for, alongside 6+ years. The earlier roadmap on becoming an AI engineer in India without a degree gives the broader picture for engineers without a conventional route.
How do people switch into AI and GenAI roles without relevant work experience?
The India data shows a market that is growing but not easy for newcomers. Naukri's JobSpeak for September 2026 reported AI and ML hiring up 20% year on year, with fresher AI and ML hiring in the IT sector up 19%, while IT hiring overall fell 4%. foundit's July 2026 tracker said almost a third of entry-level openings are now internships, contracts or project work, and that employers are buying builders, not researchers.
foundit's July 2026 data on AI-led fresher jobs shows where the openings are: AI and ML Engineer made up 28%, Data Analyst 24%, Prompt Engineer 12%, AI Operations 10%, Data Scientist 9%, GenAI Developer 7% and AI QA and Testing 5%. These are fresher-level roles, not FDE roles.
For an engineer who already has a software job, such as a developer a year or so out of a first role who wants to move into applied work, one lever is a project inside the current employer. TeamLease Digital's FY2026-27 primer said only 16% of IT professionals in India hold AI skills. An internal project builds the production record that Cursor and Sarvam's postings describe.
Rubrik's Senior Applied AI Engineer posting in Bangalore, updated 21 October 2026, shows the other end: 8+ years of software engineering with 1 to 2 years shipping AI-agent features.
Where does a structured programme fit?
A taught route is the Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) Cohort. It is a Leap by Masai programme for engineers with hands-on technical experience, run as an in-person start, an online build phase and an in-person hackathon for qualifying participants, covering production Python, APIs, cloud deployment, LLMs, retrieval, agents, security and client engagement. Its eligibility reads: engineers with at least 1 year of hands-on technical experience and comfort writing code.
Frequently asked questions
Can an engineer with 2 years of experience become a forward deployed engineer?
Possibly, at some employers, but most postings ask for more. Cursor's India posting states no minimum, while Anthropic asks 4+ years, OpenAI and DevRev 5+ and Databricks 6+. In Bloomberry's data, 0 to 2 years appeared in 12% of postings that state experience. Two years is a starting position, not a settled route.
Can a fresher become a forward deployed engineer?
Directly, rarely in India. Palantir lists new-graduate and internship FDE roles, but none located in India on its careers page on 30 October 2026. Freshers usually start in software, data or AI-related roles first, as foundit's July 2026 data on AI-led fresher jobs suggests, and build a track record toward customer-facing work.
What should an engineer study to become a forward deployed engineer?
Indeed's India report, relayed by IANS on 14 October 2026, lists Python or Java, APIs, cloud technologies, retrieval-augmented generation and AI agents among the skills for FDE roles, and DevRev's posting adds SQL. Bloomberry found Python in 66% of postings, mostly in the United States. Customer-facing practice can run alongside the technical study.
Is a degree needed to become a forward deployed engineer?
Postings usually expect a degree and some accept equivalents. Anthropic lists a Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience, and DevRev asks for a Bachelor's or Master's in a technical field. The experience bar usually matters more than the degree.
Can a software engineer move into FDE work inside the same company?
Yes, at some employers. Salesforce said on 18 March 2026 that about 40% to 50% of FDE movement at the company is internal, and that it launched a six-week FDE onboarding programme in September 2025, with two weeks of technical training and four weeks on the job.
