GenAI engineer jobs in India, what LLM roles ask for in 2026

GenAI engineer jobs in India in 2026: foundit found generative AI and LLM skills in 22% of AI postings in 2025, growing 58%, the fastest skill it tracked.

GenAI engineer roles decoded

A GenAI engineer in India builds products on top of existing large language models: prompts, tool calls, retrieval, evaluation and deployment, rather than training a model from scratch. The demand is real and concentrated. foundit's Insights Tracker found generative AI and LLM skills in 22% of Indian AI job postings in 2025, with 58% year-on-year growth, the fastest of any AI skill it tracked.

What does a GenAI or LLM engineer do day to day?

The job titles vary, but the postings describe a consistent core. Observe.AI's AI Agent Engineer posting in Hyderabad, dated 23 September 2026, describes a client-facing, delivery-focused role: design, integrate and deploy enterprise voice and chat AI agents. It lists prompt design, workflow configuration, API integrations, telephony setup and evaluation frameworks, and it says plainly that the role is "not building foundational AI models".

Sarvam's Agent Engineer posting, from Bengaluru on 20 August 2026, reads similarly but at a deeper technical level. It asks for serious work with LLMs and agents, naming context engineering, tool use, structured outputs and memory. Alongside those it wants strong Python with range across backend, data pipelines, APIs and cloud, and the ability to sit with a customer's engineering team.

So the day-to-day work is closer to software engineering around a model than to research. A GenAI engineer connects a language model to company data and systems, decides what it should do when it is wrong, measures how well it performs and keeps the result running for real users. Naukri's AI at Work analysis, summarised in July 2026, says recruiters increasingly search for titles such as Agent Builder, AI Automation Engineer, AI Platform Engineer and AI Solution Architect, so the same work travels under several names.

How fast are GenAI skills spreading, and are all data jobs GenAI now?

Growth is fast but not universal. foundit's December 2025 tracker broke down what the 2025 AI postings asked for. Machine Learning appeared in 34% of them, growing 29%. Generative AI and LLMs appeared in 22%, growing 58%.

Skill named in AI postings (foundit, 2025)Share of AI postingsYear-on-year growth
Machine Learning34%29%
Generative AI and LLMs22%58%
Data Science and Advanced Analytics18%24%
NLP14%31%
Computer Vision12%27%
MLOps and model deployment10%42%
AI engineering9%35%

Shares overlap, because one posting can name several skills, so the column should not be added up. The reading that follows is that GenAI is the fastest-growing named skill and still second in share to classical machine learning. Data science postings are not "all GenAI now": foundit's data science and analytics share was 18% and grew 24%, the slowest growth in the table.

Indeed Hiring Lab's September 2025 India update shows how widely AI is mentioned across occupations. AI appeared in 39% of data and analytics postings on Indeed India, 23% of software development postings, 18% of insurance postings and 17% of scientific research postings. A mention is not a GenAI job, and Indeed says its India data skews towards tech, management and sales. It does indicate that AI has become a skill inside many roles rather than only a job title.

Naukri's analysis fits that reading, finding that AI mentions in technology job descriptions grew nearly 17-fold, from 0.9% in 2020 to 15% in 2026. TeamLease Digital's FY2026-27 primer, built on 37,000 tech and digital roles across 18 cities, says only 16% of IT professionals in India hold AI skills. A supply gap of that kind may help explain why employers advertise for the skill so heavily. It does not make any individual hire easy.

What do named Indian employers ask for in applied LLM roles?

Three employer postings, each from a different type of company, show the range. The table sets out the experience bar and the main asks as each company worded them.

Employer and rolePostedExperience barMain asks
Observe.AI, AI Agent Engineer (Hyderabad)23 September 2026Not statedPrompt design, workflow configuration, API integrations, telephony setup, evaluation frameworks
Sarvam, Agent Engineer (Bengaluru)20 August 20263+ yearsLLMs and agents, strong Python, evals, customer-facing work
Rubrik, Senior Applied AI Engineer (Bangalore)Updated 21 October 20268+ years of software engineering, 1 to 2 years shipping AI agentsReact or Next.js, REST APIs, distributed systems, reliability

Two things follow. First, "applied AI engineer" at a product company in India often means a senior software engineer who also ships agents. Rubrik's posting wants 8 or more years of software engineering with 1 to 2 years of hands-on experience putting AI-agent features into production. Second, Sarvam's posting says that what matters more than years is having shipped and run something that real users depended on.

That second point is the most useful one for a candidate. A posting that asks for three years is really asking for evidence of a running system, and evidence can come from a project as well as from a job. The post on moving from software engineering into machine learning covers how developers with a few years behind them make that case.

Is applied LLM engineering the same as foundation model research?

No, and the postings draw the line clearly. Sarvam's ML Researcher posting for foundational models, from 21 May 2026, asks for a PhD in machine learning, computer science or a closely related field, or one in its final stages. It also wants 3+ years of post-PhD research, first-author papers at venues such as NeurIPS, ICML or ICLR, and hands-on pre-training of transformer models.

The same company's ML Engineer (Training Infra) posting of 7 October 2026 asks for a BS or MS in computer science or equivalent demonstrated experience, 3+ years building ML training infrastructure, hands-on distributed training with tools such as DeepSpeed and FSDP, and GPU and CUDA knowledge. Neither is an entry-level or generalist job. They are the deep end, and applied LLM work such as the Agent Engineer role sits well above them in accessibility.

India is funding that deep end. Under the IndiaAI Mission, the Government selected 20 indigenous foundation model proposals from 506 applications, 12 of them large multimodal models and 8 small language models, as of August 2026, according to the Press Information Bureau. That creates roles in model training and evaluation, though the PIB figures give no hiring numbers. Whether a degree is needed for research roles and not for application roles is the subject of the post on whether a master's in AI and ML is worth it.

What skills do GenAI postings list?

The postings above allow a working skill list. Across the Sarvam, Observe.AI and Rubrik roles, the recurring asks are these:

  • strong Python, with range across backend, data pipelines, APIs and cloud
  • prompt design and context engineering, including tool use, structured outputs and memory
  • API integrations and workflow configuration
  • evaluation frameworks, described by Sarvam as evals that separate signal from noise
  • reliability practices and distributed systems, at the senior end

Retrieval-augmented generation, usually shortened to RAG, is one common technique for connecting a model to company documents, and an earlier post on what RAG is explains it. It is a technique worth understanding, whether or not a given posting names it. A primer on large language models covers the underlying mechanics.

What the list shows is that evaluation appears in both Sarvam's and Observe.AI's wording. A candidate who can show how an LLM feature was tested, and what happened when it gave a wrong answer, speaks to something employers actually wrote down. An unevaluated demo chatbot speaks to less.

Which GenAI roles are open to freshers?

A small share, mostly under different titles. In foundit's July 2026 analysis of AI-led fresher jobs, AI/ML Engineer made up 28%, Data Analyst 24%, Prompt Engineer 12%, AI Operations 10%, Data Scientist 9%, GenAI Developer 7% and AI QA and Testing 5%. So the dedicated GenAI developer title is 7% of a category that foundit says rose from about 1% of fresher postings to 4% in a year, while overall fresher hiring fell 10%.

foundit's reading was that employers are buying "builders, not researchers". That fits the postings, and it also explains why the named applied roles at Sarvam and Rubrik start at 3 and 8 years. In foundit's mix the largest fresher titles are AI/ML Engineer and Data Analyst, and the dedicated GenAI Developer title is 7%. The competition is covered in the post on whether AI and ML is oversaturated for freshers, and the post on capability centres covers where foundit expects about two-thirds of new capability-centre roles to ask for AI, data or automation skills.

Postings describe what employers request, not what they eventually hire. Sample sizes vary, titles are inconsistent across companies, and each tracker uses its own method.

Where does a structured programme fit?

Some candidates prefer a taught sequence to self-study. Certification in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning is an online programme from Vishlesan i-Hub, IIT Patna, delivered on Masai's online platform, that covers Python, machine learning, deep learning, generative AI and LLMs, agentic systems and deploying models to production. Its fourth module is titled Generative AI, LLM Engineering and Agentic Systems.

Any programme is only as useful as the projects a learner builds and can explain afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

What does a generative AI engineer do?

A generative AI engineer builds applications on existing large language models, handling prompt design, tool use, API integrations, evaluation and deployment. Observe.AI's September 2026 posting describes deploying enterprise voice and chat agents and says the role is not building foundational models. The work sits closer to software engineering than to research.

Do GenAI engineer jobs need a PhD?

Not for applied roles. Sarvam's May 2026 ML Researcher posting asks for a PhD, but its Agent Engineer posting asks for 3+ years of experience with LLMs and agents, and its training infrastructure role accepts a BS or MS or equivalent demonstrated experience. Research roles set a higher academic bar than engineering ones.

How fast is demand for GenAI skills growing in India?

foundit's December 2025 tracker found generative AI and LLM skills in 22% of AI postings in 2025, growing 58% year on year, the fastest of the skills it tracked. Naukri found AI mentions in technology job descriptions rose from 0.9% in 2020 to 15% in 2026. Both measure postings, not hires.

Can a fresher become a GenAI engineer in India?

It is possible but narrow. foundit's July 2026 analysis put GenAI Developer at 7% of AI-led fresher jobs and Prompt Engineer at 12%, and the named applied roles at Sarvam and Rubrik ask for 3 and 8 years. Fresher entry more often comes through AI/ML engineer, data analyst or AI operations roles.

What should a GenAI portfolio show?

Evidence of a system that ran and was tested. Sarvam's posting says what matters more than years is having shipped and run something real users depended on, and both Sarvam and Observe.AI mention evaluation. A deployed project that includes an evaluation method and a documented failure is closer to that standard than a notebook demo.
