Forward deployed engineer vs solutions engineer vs software engineer
Forward deployed engineer vs solutions engineer: one AI lab asks 10+ years of its pre-sales architect and 4+ years of the FDE who builds in production.
Anthropic separates a pre-sales architect role from a forward deployed engineer role that builds production applications inside customer systems. Its Bangalore pre-sales architect posting asks for 10+ years, and its London forward deployed engineer posting asks for 4+ years. Other employers draw the line differently, so the responsibilities in a posting matter more than the title.
Forward deployed engineer, solutions engineer and software engineer: what is the difference?
Anthropic's postings, covered below, separate a pre-sales architect from an FDE who builds production applications. HackerRank's FDE posting lists pilots and demos, and MongoDB's lists production code inside a partner's codebase. The three titles are not defined the same way across employers.
Andreessen Horowitz partner Joe Schmidt, writing on 4 June 2025, described FDEs as a professional-services role at AI companies, with work that includes securely connecting the AI application to internal databases, APIs and workflows. He noted that the title overlaps with implementation and solutions specialists, and that 22 of OpenAI's 311 open roles at that time sat in FDE and solutions-engineer categories. That is an investor's view, and the overlap he names is visible in real postings, covered below.
How does a forward deployed engineer differ from a solutions engineer?
The cleanest evidence is one employer posting both roles. Anthropic's Bangalore Applied AI Architect posting, updated on 9 October 2026, describes a pre-sales architect who guides large enterprises across India and Asia Pacific from technical discovery to deployment. It asks for 10+ years in technical customer-facing roles such as Solutions Architect, Sales Engineer or Technical Account Manager.
Its London Forward Deployed Engineer posting, updated on 14 September 2026, says FDEs embed with strategic customers, build production applications with Claude models, and deliver MCP servers, sub-agents and agent skills for production workflows. It asks for 4+ years in a technical customer-facing role, production LLM experience and strong Python, and it lists travel of 25 to 50% to customer sites.
In Anthropic's wording, the pre-sales role guides a customer from technical discovery to deployment, and the FDE role builds production applications. OpenAI's San Francisco FDE posting of 11 September 2026 makes the same point from its side, saying FDEs own discovery, technical scoping, system design, build and rollout, and measure success through production adoption.
The experience bars also run in an order that may surprise people. At this lab the pre-sales architect role asks for more years than the FDE role, so an engineer should not assume that FDE is the senior step beyond solutions work.
How does a forward deployed engineer differ from a software engineer?
DevRev's Delhi NCR FDE posting, updated on 9 October 2026, puts hands-on coding and integration at 70 to 80% of the FDE role, so the code is real in both jobs.
What changes is the surrounding work. DevRev's description is 80% customer-facing, and it allows travel up to 80%. Databricks says its Senior FDE role in Bengaluru, updated on 6 October 2026, is billable. Salesforce said on 18 March 2026 that its FDEs code, consult and translate agentic AI into working solutions, often sitting side by side with the customer.
On the broader question of whether software engineering is shrinking, Naukri's JobSpeak for September 2026 reported IT and software services hiring down 4% year on year while AI and ML roles within the IT sector grew 11%. The earlier post on whether AI will replace software engineers in India covers that data in full.
How do the titles overlap in real postings?
The overlap is genuine, and it runs both ways. HackerRank's Bengaluru FDE posting, updated on 14 October 2026, asks for a customer-facing technical lead who works onsite, runs pilots and demos, and can configure, debug and explain web applications and write API scripts in Ruby or Python. Solutions or sales engineering experience is listed as a plus. That reads more like a solutions role than an embedded engineer.
MongoDB's Gurugram posting for Forward Deployed Engineer, Industry Solutions, asks for 5+ years of backend engineering and production code written inside an independent software vendor partner's codebase. That is deep engineering work for a partner, not demo work. The same title therefore covers pilot-and-demo work at one employer and embedded production engineering at another.
Other titles add to the mix. Sarvam AI's Deployment Strategist, posted on 11 August 2026, owns enterprise deployments end to end for India's large banks, insurers, digital natives and government departments, from proof of concept to production. OpenAI and Anthropic list Applied AI Architect roles in India, and their careers pages on 30 October 2026 list no FDE-titled role in India at either. Candidates should read the responsibilities, the experience bar and the travel line before deciding what a posting really is.
Travel, coding share and experience, side by side
The table compares five postings and one investor's view, using each source's own wording and date.
| Role and source | What it does | Coding, customer share and travel | Experience asked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anthropic Applied AI Architect, Bangalore (9 October 2026) | Pre-sales architect guiding enterprises from technical discovery to deployment | No figure given | 10+ years in technical customer-facing roles |
| Anthropic FDE, London (14 September 2026) | Embeds with customers, builds production applications, delivers MCP servers | Travel 25 to 50% | 4+ years in a technical customer-facing role |
| HackerRank FDE, Bengaluru (14 October 2026) | Onsite technical lead, pilots and demos, API scripts | No figure given | Solutions or sales engineering a plus |
| MongoDB FDE, Industry Solutions, Gurugram (updated 28 October 2026) | Production code inside a partner's codebase | No figure given | 5+ years of backend engineering |
| DevRev FDE, Delhi NCR (9 October 2026) | AI agents, integrations and automations for customers | 80% customer-facing, 70 to 80% coding, travel up to 80% | 5+ years |
| Andreessen Horowitz, 4 June 2025 | Professional-services role; title overlaps with implementation and solutions specialists | No figure given | Not applicable |
Stated experience for the FDE-titled roles runs from 4+ to 5+ years across the postings above, and Databricks' Bengaluru role asks for 6+. The coding share is only given in numbers by one employer.
Is DevOps or ML the smarter move for an engineer with a year or two of experience in India?
FDE-type work sits between them. Databricks' Senior FDE posting asks for MLOps and AI API knowledge, CI/CD, Apache Spark and two or more of AWS, Azure and GCP. Cursor's India posting asks for ownership of production quality, with tracing, evals, metrics and latency and cost trade-offs. Those are platform skills applied to AI systems.
On the wider market, Naukri's JobSpeak for September 2026 reported AI and ML hiring up 20% year on year against 2% for overall white-collar hiring. In foundit's 2025 breakdown of AI postings, MLOps and model deployment appeared in 10% of them, with 42% year-on-year growth. The MLOps figure points toward engineers who can deploy and operate AI systems.
Sarvam's Agent Engineer posting says that having shipped and run something real users depended on matters more than years.
The skills involved are covered in the post on forward deployed engineer skills, and the route in is in the post on how to become a forward deployed engineer. The question of whether to keep learning to code at all is discussed in the earlier post on whether coding is still worth learning after AI.
Where does a structured programme fit?
A taught route is the Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) Cohort. It is a Leap by Masai programme for engineers with hands-on technical experience, run as an in-person start, an online build phase and an in-person hackathon for qualifying participants, covering production Python, APIs, cloud deployment, LLMs, retrieval, agents, security and client engagement. Its eligibility reads: engineers with at least 1 year of hands-on technical experience and comfort writing code.
Frequently asked questions
Is a forward deployed engineer the same as a solutions engineer?
No, though the titles overlap in practice. Employers define the two differently. Anthropic posts them separately: a Bangalore pre-sales architect role asking 10+ years, and a London FDE role asking 4+ years.
Is a forward deployed engineer the same as a solutions architect?
Not necessarily. Anthropic's Applied AI Architect posting in Bangalore describes a pre-sales architect who guides enterprises from technical discovery to deployment. An FDE, in the same company's wording, builds production applications and delivers working components. DevRev also lists a Forward Deployed Architect title, so the job description decides.
Is a forward deployed engineer a software engineer?
Yes, with more customer contact. DevRev's Delhi NCR posting puts hands-on coding and integration at 70 to 80% of the role, and 80% of it as customer-facing.
Do forward deployed engineers earn more than software engineers?
Indeed's India report, relayed by IANS on 14 October 2026, gives average base pay of approximately Rs 12 lakh a year for FDE roles in India, within a range of Rs 9 lakh to Rs 16 lakh. That is market data for the role, not a comparison and not a promise.
Which role is better for a fresher?
The FDE and pre-sales architect postings ask for 4+ and 10+ years. Bloomberry's mostly US data found 0 to 2 years in 12% of postings that state experience, so a fresher should expect to start in a software or solutions role first.
