Entrepreneurship Courses From IIMs: What Founders and Working Professionals Should Look For in 2027

An entrepreneurship course from an IIM comes in three forms: a short certificate of 10 days to 8 months (often delivered with an ed-tech or skilling partner), a free or equity-linked incubator programme, or a one-year post-graduate programme with alumni status. Fees run from nil to Rs 6,00,000 and above, so the first decision is which type you need.

This guide separates the three, puts verified fees side by side, and explains what IIM Mumbai's one-year Post Graduate Program for Executives in Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management (PGPEx-EIM) includes for Rs 6,00,000. Figures were read on the institutes' own pages on 29 October 2026; where no official fee exists, the guide says so.

Why structure matters more than the name on the certificate

India had more than 2.23 lakh DPIIT-recognised startups as on 31 March 2026, up from around 500 in 2016, according to PIB releases of April 2026 and January 2025. Funding has not kept pace: Tracxn put calendar-2025 funding at USD 10.5 billion, down 17 percent on 2024, while Inc42 counted USD 11 billion, down 8 percent. The trackers differ, so this guide names them.

The failure data is what brochures skip. A 2017 IBM Institute for Business Value study with Oxford Economics, based on a 2016 survey of 100 venture capitalists and 600 others, cited an estimate that 90 percent of Indian startups fail within five years; it is a cited estimate, not a tracked closure rate. CB Insights' March 2026 analysis of 431 VC-backed shutdowns since 2023 is more current: 70 percent ran out of capital, 43 percent lacked product-market fit, 29 percent were hit by timing or macro conditions, and 19 percent had unsustainable unit economics (multi-select).

Capital planning, market validation, timing and unit economics are exactly what a programme with staged capstones and investor-facing mentors forces you to confront before you spend your own money. A two-week bootcamp cannot make you rewrite your unit economics three times.

Incubators at IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Udaipur and IIM Nagpur are not courses with published fees, so they are left out. What the IIM Mumbai entrepreneurship program includes for Rs 6,00,000

The PGPEx-EIM is built around a venture you bring with you. The application requires a Statement of Purpose outlining your business idea, and relevant startup, family business, R&D or entrepreneurial experience earns 10 of the 100 selection marks (test score 40, personal interview 30, graduation 10, Class X and XII 5 each).

The year runs in three modules:

  • Foundations: Startup Failure and Resilience; Innovation and Technology-Product Strategy; Venture Capital and Financial Management; Marketing for Entrepreneurs; Project Management; Capstone 1, the Venture Blueprint; and the first immersion, with a design-thinking workshop and a visit to the institute's innovation and incubation centre.
  • Building and Scaling: AI and Data Analytics for Entrepreneurs; Managing Operations and Supply Chain in a Startup; Product Management; Legal Aspects and IP; Capstone 2, Market Proof.
  • Leadership and Growth: Leadership and Communication for Entrepreneurs; Sustainable Development for Business; Internationalizing Business; Capstone 3, the Founder's Thesis, described on the page as an investment-ready plan; and the second immersion, a Pitch Day with CXOs, mentors and investors.

Mentorship is 30 hours across 10 sessions with CXOs and investors. After the Founder's Thesis, participants may apply to take the venture into TEJAS, IIM Mumbai's entrepreneurship and incubation initiative, whose four phases run from idea validation and legal set-up through prototype and go-to-market to an investor demo day. Entry is subject to screening, and TEJAS states that selection does not guarantee funding. The page also states that eligible participants may pursue lateral entry into other IIM Mumbai programmes under NEP 2020's multiple-entry, multiple-exit provisions, subject to requirements; it names no programmes, so treat that as the page's own statement.

The trade-offs

  • No placement claims. The page makes none; this is for people building something.
  • Immersion travel and stay are yours to pay, on top of the fee.
  • Friday evenings plus weekends for a year, online, is harder to sustain than a 10-day residential burst. Your discipline keeps you on track, not a campus timetable.
  • It is not an MBA. For a general-management degree, the two-year weekend MBA-PGPM is a different product at three times the fee; see the comparison of all IIM Mumbai programmes.
  • Refunds are narrow: before commencement you get the paid amount minus Rs 1,000; after it, only the Rs 25,000 caution deposit.

A worked example: Rs 80,000 certificate or Rs 6 lakh programme

Consider a 32-year-old operations manager in Nashik with seven years at an auto-components supplier, an idea for a predictive-maintenance service for small factories, and Rs 15 lakh in savings.

If she is not sure the idea is a business, the 70-hour IIM Mumbai and NSDC certificate at Rs 80,000, or SPJIMR's nine-weekend Start Your Business at Rs 95,000 plus GST, tests her appetite for a fraction of the cost, with a certificate of completion and no alumni status. If she already has a prototype and two pilot customers, NSRCEL's free Launchpad is the cheapest serious route, provided she clears its review stages and accepts that there is no credential. If she wants to keep her salary, build the plan to investment-ready standard in a year and leave with a post-graduate credential, the PGPEx-EIM's three capstones and 30 hours of investor mentorship are what Rs 6,00,000 buys. That fee is 40 percent of her savings, so the Founder's Thesis had better be the document she raises on.

Five checks before you pay for any IIM course for entrepreneurs

  1. Who issues the credential, and is it alumni status or a certificate of completion?
  2. How many structured hours over how long? 70 hours in four months and 400 hours in a year are different commitments.
  3. Does a capstone produce a usable document, such as a validated market study or an investment-ready plan?
  4. What does the fee exclude? GST, residency, travel, deposits. IIM Mumbai's Rs 6,00,000 is tax-inclusive; most other figures above are plus GST.
  5. Does the entrance route fit your timeline? The PGPEx-EIM takes the home-proctored IMAT on 08 November 2026 or a valid CAT, GMAT or GRE score; the IMAT guide explains the test and Executive MBA without CAT covers alternatives.

If you run or will inherit a family enterprise rather than a startup, the family business management guide looks at the same choice from the next-generation owner's seat.

Frequently asked questions

Which IIM is best for an entrepreneurship course?

There is no single answer because the programmes differ in kind. For a free pre-incubation route with grants, NSRCEL's Launchpad at IIM Bangalore is the reference point. For a one-year, online, tax-inclusive post-graduate programme with alumni status and staged capstones, IIM Mumbai's PGPEx-EIM at Rs 6,00,000 is the most affordable in its category.

What is the fee for the IIM Mumbai entrepreneurship course?

The one-year PGPEx-EIM costs Rs 6,00,000 inclusive of all taxes in a single instalment (Rs 1,00,000 seat booking plus Rs 5,00,000), or Rs 6,25,000 in two instalments. A Rs 25,000 refundable caution deposit and the Rs 3,000 application fee are separate, as are travel and stay for the two campus immersions.

Is the IIM Mumbai Entrepreneurship and Start Up Mastery program the same as the PGPEx-EIM?

No. The Certificate Program in Entrepreneurship and Start Up Mastery is a 70-hour short course over about four months, run by IIM Mumbai with NSDC and delivered by Masai School, priced at Rs 80,000 on the partner page, with a co-branded certificate of completion and no alumni status. The PGPEx-EIM is a one-year, 400-plus-hour post-graduate programme with IIM Mumbai alumni status.

Can I do an IIM entrepreneurship course while working?

Yes, with the right format. The PGPEx-EIM runs online on Friday evenings and weekends with two 3-day immersions, IIM Kozhikode's certificate is online over eight months, and SPJIMR's Start Your Business is nine weekends. Residential programmes such as ISB's six-month ivi assume you can step away from your job.

Do I need a business idea to apply to the PGPEx-EIM?

Yes. The application requires a Statement of Purpose outlining your business idea, and relevant startup, family business, R&D or entrepreneurial experience earns 10 of the 100 selection marks. The three capstones, from Venture Blueprint to Founder's Thesis, are built on that idea, so an applicant without one would struggle to use the programme.

Next step

If a one-year, venture-based programme fits, register for the PGPEx-EIM with the Rs 3,000 application fee, draft the SOP around your idea, and book the IMAT for 08 November 2026 unless you hold a valid CAT, GMAT or GRE score; the January 2027 batch starts online on 16 January 2027. The full portfolio is on the IIM Mumbai Executive Education hub.
