Executive MBA Without CAT: How to Get Into an IIM With GMAT, GRE or an Institute Test

You do not need a CAT score for an executive MBA at most IIMs. The one-year full-time programmes at IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore and IIM Calcutta ask for GMAT or GRE, and most weekend and blended programmes accept GMAT, GRE, CAT or the institute's own test. IIM Mumbai's route is its home-proctored IMAT on 08 November 2026, or a valid CAT, GMAT or GRE score.

The longer answer matters because "without CAT" covers three different routes, each institute sets its own score windows, and "no entrance exam" can still mean a hard selection. This guide lists only programmes whose test policy was readable on an official page on 29 October 2026.

What "without CAT" really means at an IIM

CAT is the entrance test for the two-year full-time MBA. Executive programmes were built for people with years of work behind them, so almost every IIM gives those applicants other doors:

• GMAT or GRE. Valid for five years; several IIMs accept only test-centre scores, explained below.
• The institute's own test. IMAT at IIM Mumbai, EMAT at IIM Kozhikode, IIM Kashipur and IIM Visakhapatnam, IIMJAT at IIM Jammu, IIMNAT at IIM Nagpur, the IIMB Test at IIM Bangalore, the IIMU Test at IIM Udaipur, and the PGPWE Entrance Exam at IIM Lucknow.
• No test at all. Profile, statement of purpose and interview. Among the IIM pages checked, only IIM Sambalpur's MBA for Working Professionals at its Delhi Centre lists this route. Outside the IIMs, ISB's PGP PRO and PGP MAX work this way.

CAT is still accepted at many executive programmes, but on a short leash. CAT 2026 is on Sunday 29 November 2026, conducted by IIM Indore, and registration closed in September 2026 (as reported by Careers360 and Deccan Herald; the official CAT site could not be reached at the time of writing). A CAT score is normally usable only for the admission cycle that follows it, so CAT 2026 feeds the 2027 intake. One exception: IIM Mumbai's public policy page accepts CAT, GMAT or GRE scores from the last five years.

The verified list: which IIM executive programmes accept what

Rows are grouped by how far each programme lets you get from CAT. Everything in the last column was read on the institute's own page; links are in the Sources section.

Checked but left out because no test policy was found on the official page: IIM Udaipur's one-year GSCM and DEM MBAs, IIM Ranchi's MBA (Executive), IIM Sambalpur's online Executive MBA, IIM Raipur's ePGP and IIM Rohtak's PGPx. Email those offices before choosing a test.

Two patterns stand out: the one-year full-time programmes at the older IIMs are built around GMAT and GRE, and the weekend and blended degrees almost always offer an institute test, the quickest door if you have no score in hand. Score validity, and the fine print that trips people up

A GMAT score is valid for five years from the test date, and a GRE score is reportable for five years. Institutes then set their own windows, and they are tighter than most applicants expect:

• IIM Calcutta MBAEx: GMAT taken within 36 months of 01 August 2026.
• IIM Jammu: CAT, GMAT or GRE no more than three years old.
• IIM Kashipur: CAT or GMAT from the last two years.
• IIM Indore EPGP: CAT 2025 or 2026 only, while GMAT and GRE get the full five years.
• IIM Mumbai: the public policy page accepts CAT, GMAT or GRE from the last five years; the entrepreneurship page FAQ asks for scores from June 2024 onwards.

The second trap is the at-home test. IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore (EPGP and PGPEM), IIM Calcutta and IIM Lucknow do not accept online or at-home GMAT and GRE scores. Book a test centre.

The third is a cut-off printed into eligibility. IIM Shillong asks for CAT at the 50th percentile or a GMAT of 500 for both its programmes. Others publish no floor, which usually means the score is one input alongside work experience, academics and the interview.

How the IIM Mumbai route works without CAT

IIM Mumbai, formerly NITIE and ranked 6th in the NIRF 2025 Management Rankings, runs five programmes through its Executive Education portal for the January 2027 batch, and none requires CAT. Each accepts the IIM Mumbai Admission Test (IMAT), an online, home-proctored test on 08 November 2026, or a valid CAT, GMAT or GRE score. The Creative Industries MBA uses a version the site calls the Creative Industries IMAT.

The four programmes built for working professionals:

• MBA-PGPM, the two-year weekend MBA, on campus in Powai or live virtual at outreach centres in Pune, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Delhi NCR. Graduation plus at least 2 years of relevant work experience. Rs 18,00,000 at the Mumbai campus or Rs 14,50,000 at outreach centres on the annual plan, inclusive of taxes.
• Executive MBA in Wealth Management, one year, weekends on campus, 50 seats. At least 2 years of post-qualification experience; banking and wealth-management experience preferred. Rs 15,00,000 inclusive of taxes. The FAQ states that placement support is not offered.
• Post Graduate Program for Executives in Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management, one year, online with two three-day campus immersions. Bachelor's with 50 percent marks, at least 1 year of work experience and a Statement of Purpose with your business idea. Rs 6,00,000 in a single instalment.
• Post Graduate Program in Public Policy Management, one year, blended online weekends with four campus immersions, awarding a Post Graduate Diploma in Public Policy Management. At least 5 years of work experience. Rs 8,75,000.

The calendar is shared: IMAT on 08 November 2026, interviews on 25 to 27 November, tentative results on 01 December, seat securing with Rs 1,00,000 between 2 and 11 December, and classes from January 2027. The application fee is Rs 3,000.

Only the entrepreneurship programme publishes how the test is weighed: 40 marks for the CAT, GMAT, GRE or IMAT score, 30 for the interview, 10 for graduation marks, 10 for relevant entrepreneurial or family-business experience, and 5 each for Class X and XII. The test is the biggest single component, but the interview and your record together outweigh it. A worked example: picking a route in November 2026

Consider a 32-year-old operations manager in Hyderabad with seven years' experience who decided in October 2026 that she wants an IIM degree while staying in her job. CAT 2026 registration has closed, so she has three realistic paths.

She can book a test-centre GMAT, which keeps every option in the table open for five years, at the cost of two to three months of preparation. She can sit IMAT on 08 November 2026 and apply to IIM Mumbai's MBA-ePGPM at the Hyderabad outreach centre, with a decision by 01 December for a January 2027 start. Or she can wait for a later institute test: IIM Indore's PGPMX test and interview on 06 December 2026, or IIM Kashipur's EMAT on 26 December 2026.

The sensible plan is IMAT first, because it costs Rs 3,000 and one Sunday and does not stop her taking the GMAT in parallel for other IIMs' 2027-28 cycles. The weakest plan is waiting for CAT 2027, a year's delay for a test most executive programmes do not insist on.

Institute tests do not repeat on demand: missing IMAT on 08 November 2026 means a year's wait. The IIM Mumbai executive MBA overview sets out all five programmes and their awards; the entrepreneurship and public policy programmes are not MBAs.

Does IIM Mumbai accept students without CAT?

Yes. Every IIM Mumbai executive programme accepts the home-proctored IMAT as an alternative to CAT, GMAT or GRE. Is there an executive MBA with no entrance exam at all?

Within the IIM pages verified for this guide, only IIM Sambalpur's MBA for Working Professionals at its Delhi Centre lists admission on profile, SOP and interview. ISB's PGP PRO and PGP MAX also have no entrance test, but PGP PRO awards a postgraduate certification rather than a degree. Every other programme in this guide requires a test score.
