Entry-level machine learning jobs in India and what they ask for

Entry-level machine learning jobs in India: AI/ML Engineer is 28% of foundit's July 2026 AI-led fresher postings, and 41% of fresher roles pay Rs 3-5 LPA.

Entry-level ML jobs in India

Entry-level machine learning jobs in India are mostly posted as AI/ML Engineer, Data Analyst or Prompt Engineer rather than data scientist. In foundit's July 2026 tracker, AI/ML Engineer made up 28% of AI-led fresher jobs, Data Analyst 24% and Prompt Engineer 12%. foundit's 2025 data says entry roles focus on Python, SQL and machine learning basics, and almost a third of entry-level openings are internships, contracts or project work.

Which AI and ML roles are open to freshers in India?

foundit's July 2026 tracker breaks down the AI-led jobs offered to freshers by role. The shares come from one tracker and one month, and AI-led roles were about 4% of all fresher postings, so the table describes a small part of the fresher market.

RankRoleShare of AI-led fresher jobs, foundit July 2026
1AI/ML Engineer28%
2Data Analyst24%
3Prompt Engineer12%
4AI Operations10%
5Data Scientist9%
6GenAI Developer7%
7AI QA and Testing5%

foundit reads this mix as employers buying builders rather than researchers. Two things follow. A fresher who wants a machine learning title has the largest single route in AI/ML Engineer. And about two in five AI-led fresher jobs (Data Analyst 24%, AI Operations 10%, AI QA and Testing 5%) sit in roles adjacent to modelling, where machine learning skills are an asset rather than the whole job.

Naukri's data shows the same direction. Its JobSpeak for April 2026 had fresher AI/ML hiring up 16% year on year, and its September 2026 release had it up 19%. A comparison of AI engineer, data scientist and machine learning engineer roles explains how the three titles differ once experience builds.

Some "engineer" titles are not entry-level at all. Sarvam AI's Agent Engineer posting in Bengaluru, dated 20 August 2026, hires from 3+ years of experience, and its ML Engineer (Training Infra) posting, dated 7 October 2026, asks for 3+ years building ML training infrastructure. Rubrik's Senior Applied AI Engineer posting in Bangalore, updated 21 October 2026, targets 8+ years of software engineering. A title alone does not tell a fresher whether a role is open to them.

What do entry-level machine learning postings ask for?

In its analysis of 2025 postings, foundit says entry roles focus on Python, SQL and machine learning basics. About 18% of AI postings in 2025 asked for 0 to 3 years of experience, and that group grew 28% year on year. Most AI postings that year, in other words, were aimed at people with more experience.

Across all AI postings in 2025, foundit found Machine Learning named in 34% of them, Generative AI and LLMs in 22% (growing 58%, the fastest), Data Science and Advanced Analytics in 18%, NLP in 14%, Computer Vision in 12%, MLOps and model deployment in 10% and AI engineering in 9%. A posting can name several skills, so the shares overlap. They show the order in which skills appear more than what any one entry-level posting requires.

A fresher can read that as a sequence: Python and SQL first, then the machine learning workflow, then one specialism such as language models. A guide to MLOps skills shows what the deployment end of that sequence looks like.

Are internships and contracts how most entry roles start?

For a growing share, yes. foundit's July 2026 tracker says almost a third of entry-level openings are now internships, contracts or project work, up from about one in eight two years ago. That covers all entry-level roles, AI included but not singled out. For almost a third of entry openings, the first offer is therefore a trial period rather than a permanent job.

Sarvam AI's Agent Engineer posting says that having shipped and run something real users depended on matters more than years of experience. For a fresher, an internship or a contract is often the first place that kind of evidence can be built.

The wider fresher market is tighter. foundit's tracker says overall fresher hiring fell 10% and white-collar hiring fell 12% in the year to July 2026, even as AI-led roles rose from about 1% to 4% of fresher postings. An earlier look at whether AI and ML is oversaturated covers that tension in detail.

Which degrees do fresher postings ask for, and what about the 15% that ask for none?

foundit's July 2026 tracker says STEM disciplines account for 42% of fresher opportunities and Management and Commerce a further 32%, while 15% of fresher postings specify no formal qualification at all. These figures cover all fresher postings, not just AI ones, but they show that formal degree requirements are loosening at one end, in foundit's own words.

The World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025 gives a similar signal from the employer side: 30% of surveyed employers in India expect skills-based hiring, meaning removing degree requirements, to be effective for improving talent availability, against 19% globally. That is an expectation, not proof that degrees no longer matter. For those without a computer science degree, a step-by-step guide to starting an AI/ML career without a CS degree covers the practical route.

Where are fresher AI roles, by city and employer type?

By city, foundit's 2025 data put Bengaluru at 26% of AI postings, Delhi-NCR at 18%, Hyderabad at 12% and Pune at 8%, with Tier-1 cities holding about 80% of AI jobs. Tier-2 cities such as Jaipur, Indore, Mysuru, Coimbatore and Ahmedabad grew 30 to 40%, from a small base. A post on AI jobs by city and sector covers the geography in full.

By employer type, global capability centres are the segment where freshers are named as the fastest-growing group. foundit's July 2026 tracker says these centres are on course for roughly 510,000 hires in 2026, and around two-thirds of the new roles ask for AI, data or automation skills. A post on AI jobs in GCCs covers what centres ask for.

What do fresher pay bands look like, as posted?

About two-thirds of entry-level roles pay under Rs 5 LPA in foundit's July 2026 tracker. Its fresher bands are shown below, across all fresher roles, not just AI ones.

Fresher pay bandShare of fresher roles, foundit July 2026
Rs 3 to 5 LPA41%
Rs 5 to 8 LPA23%
Rs 8 to 12 LPA9%
Above Rs 12 LPA3%

Premium roles at Rs 8 LPA and above are 12% of fresher hiring, led by AI, data science, cybersecurity, semiconductor and product-engineering roles. AI roles are among those leading the better-paid fresher bands, though those bands remain a small share of the whole. This is market data on posted pay, and it says nothing about what any individual will be offered.

How does a fresher get the interview?

The postings above imply a short list of things to have in place. The base is Python and SQL at a working level, plus a clean pass through a machine learning workflow: data cleaning, a train-test split, a model, an evaluation and an explanation of the result. On top of that sits one finished project that runs end to end, since foundit says employers are buying builders. A list of machine learning project ideas for beginners gives starting points.

A resume that lists tools without a result reads as a course syllabus. A resume that names the data, the metric, the error and what was changed in response reads as work. TeamLease Digital's primer, built on 37,000 tech and digital roles across 18 cities, says only 16% of IT professionals in India hold AI skills, which suggests a resume with demonstrable skills has room to stand out.

On the experience bar, a post on machine learning engineer demand in India covers the experience levels most postings ask for, and a post on GenAI engineer jobs covers the language-model side, where entry points are fewer.

The Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Certification Program is an online programme from E&ICT Academy, IIT Roorkee, run with Masai as the implementation partner, with live sessions and an optional campus immersion, covering Python, data handling, machine learning, generative AI, LLMs and a capstone project. The programme ends with a capstone project.
