What enterprise AI adoption in India means for managers in 2026
Enterprise AI adoption in India: EY and CII found 47% of 200 organisations had several GenAI use cases live and 23% in pilot. What that means for managers.
Enterprise AI adoption in India is common, but uneven in depth. In November 2025, EY and CII reported that of 200 organisations surveyed, 47% had multiple GenAI use cases live in production and 23% were in pilot, with operations, customer service and marketing the top functions for the next 12 months. For managers, that means AI is arriving as work to be run inside functional teams.
How many Indian enterprises use AI in 2026, and why do the surveys disagree?
The answer depends on what a survey counts. The NASSCOM AI Adoption Index, as cited in a Press Information Bureau (PIB) backgrounder of 12 February 2026, found 87% of enterprises in India actively using AI solutions. A BCG survey cited in an earlier PIB backgrounder, dated 12 October 2025, put the share of Indian companies that have reached AI maturity at scale at about 26%. The first measures any active use, the second how deeply AI is built into the business.
The EY and CII report, "The AIdea of India: Outlook 2026", sits between the two. Its survey of 200 organisations in more than 20 industries, answered by C-suite and senior leaders, found 47% with multiple GenAI use cases live in production and a further 23% in pilot. Of those leaders, 76% expected a significant business impact.
Microsoft's India survey of leaders, published on 20 August 2025, found 59% already using agents to automate workstreams across entire teams and 93% intending to use agents to extend workforce capacity within 12 to 18 months.
Global figures show the same pattern. McKinsey's 2025 State of AI survey, as reported by PPC Land in November 2025, found 88% of its 1,993 respondents using AI regularly in at least one business function, up from 78% in 2024. Only 23% were scaling an agentic AI system, and 39% attributed any EBIT impact to AI, most of them putting it below 5% of EBIT.
The sharpest gap comes from a preliminary MIT NANDA report of July 2025, built on 300+ public initiatives, interviews at 52 organisations and a survey of 153 senior leaders. It found that 60% of organisations had evaluated custom task-specific AI tools, 20% had reached pilot and 5% had reached production, and it stated that 95% of organisations were getting zero return on $30-40 billion of enterprise GenAI investment. Its authors say the interview sample may not represent the wider market, so the report describes a pattern, not a count of Indian firms.
The table puts the main measures side by side, with the sample and what each one actually counted.
| Survey | Period | Sample | What was measured | Figure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| EY and CII | 16 November 2025 | 200 organisations, 20+ industries | Multiple GenAI use cases live in production | 47% (23% in pilot) |
| NASSCOM AI Adoption Index, via PIB | PIB backgrounder, 12 February 2026 | Enterprises in India | Enterprises actively using AI solutions | 87% |
| BCG, via PIB | PIB backgrounder, 12 October 2025 | Indian companies | Indian companies at AI maturity at scale | About 26% |
| Microsoft India | 20 August 2025 | Indian business leaders | Leaders already using agents across entire teams | 59% |
| World Economic Forum | January 2025 | Employers surveyed in India | Organisations running AI programmes | 96% |
| McKinsey, global, via PPC Land | November 2025 | 1,993 participants, 105 nations | Regular AI use in at least one function | 88% |
| BCG AI at Work, global | 3 June 2026 | 11,749 workers, 14 markets | Frontline employees who are regular AI users | 74% |
| Indeed Hiring Lab | September 2025 | Indian job postings on Indeed | Postings that mention AI | 11.7% |
The safest reading is that use is wide and scale is narrow. A team running one chatbot counts as "using AI" in some surveys and not in others, and a manager who quotes a single percentage without its definition is likely to be corrected by the next survey.
Which business functions in India adopt AI first?
Operations is the function most named for the next 12 months. Asked where GenAI would be pointed over the next 12 months, the organisations in the EY and CII survey named operations (63%), customer service (54%) and marketing (33%). These are expectations, not current deployments, and they point to the functions where managers will be asked to lead AI work.
Spending does not always follow the same order. The MIT NANDA preliminary report says budgets favour visible, top-line functions over back-office work, citing an executive estimate that 50% of GenAI budgets go to sales and marketing. It also reports that its best documented savings came from replacing business-process outsourcing and external agency spend in back-office operations.
Job postings show AI spreading as a skill inside many roles. Indeed Hiring Lab's September 2025 update found AI mentioned in 39% of data and analytics postings on Indeed India, 23% of software development postings, 18% of insurance postings and 17% of scientific research postings. Across all postings, 11.7% mentioned AI, up from 8.2% a year earlier, and Indeed says its India data skews towards technology, management and sales.
By industry, foundit's December 2025 tracker had IT software and services at 37% of AI postings in 2025, with banking, financial services and insurance at 15.8% and the fastest growth at 41%. AI work is moving beyond technology firms. Global capability centres are one channel: PIB's October 2025 backgrounder says more than 500 of India's are focused on AI.
Which non-technical AI roles are Indian employers adding?
Figures on AI demand come title by title rather than by technical background. PIB's backgrounder of 12 February 2026, citing the World Bank's South Asia Development Update, says 5.8% of India's white-collar job listings in 2025 required AI expertise, about 1 in 17. It adds that demand is emerging for AI trainers, safety testers and prompt engineers. The same backgrounder gives city shares of AI jobs, not of all jobs: Bangalore at 11%, Hyderabad at 9.57%, Pune at 6.95% and Chennai at 6.62%.
Microsoft's India findings say 92% of leaders are considering adding AI-specific roles, and 57% expect teams to build multi-agent systems. The role names Microsoft gives, such as Agent Boss, AI Workflow Designer and Software Operator, are its own coinages, not standard job titles, and "considering" is an intention, not an opening.
Naukri's report says recruiter searches increasingly look for people who can build, deploy and manage AI, with growing searches for AI Product Manager, AI Solution Architect, AI Automation Engineer, AI Platform Engineer, Agent Builder and AI Trainer. Some of those titles are engineering jobs by name, while AI Product Manager and AI Trainer sit closer to business work.
On pay, the World Bank figure quoted by PIB is a premium over comparable roles, not a salary level: 12% on average for jobs requiring digital skills and 28% for AI-focused roles. A wider look at hiring across AI roles is in the India edition of the 2026 AI job market report.
Are the jobs people are studying for going to exist in 2030?
The figures so far point to changing tasks more than vanishing roles. The World Economic Forum's 2025 survey of over 1,000 employers expects, globally, 170 million jobs to be created and 92 million displaced between 2025 and 2030, a net increase of 7%, or 78 million jobs. These are employer expectations for the world, not a forecast for Indian IT.
Worker anxiety is high where adoption is high. BCG's 2025 survey of over 10,600 workers in 11 countries found India at 92% for regular AI use, and also among the greatest fear about automation, with 41% of all respondents worried their roles could disappear within a decade. In 2026, 65% of managers and leaders in BCG's survey believed agents will take over at least half of their job within three years. That is a belief, not a measurement.
Measured outcomes are quieter. A Danish study by Humlum and Vestergaard, linking surveys to administrative records, found precise null effects of AI chatbots on earnings and recorded hours, ruling out effects larger than 2% two years after ChatGPT's launch, while employers reorganised tasks around content generation, AI oversight and AI integration. It covers Denmark only.
Indian hiring data is split. Naukri's JobSpeak for September 2026 had AI/ML roles up 20% year on year, overall white-collar hiring up 2% and IT and software services hiring down 4%. foundit's July 2026 tracker had AI-led roles rising from about 1% of fresher postings to 4% in a year while overall fresher hiring fell 10%. The two trackers disagree on the overall trend, so the tracker should always be named.
Job security, on this evidence, depends less on a title and more on whether a person can direct, check and improve AI-assisted work. The World Economic Forum lists leadership and social influence, talent management and analytical thinking among the top 10 skills on the rise to 2030, and analytical thinking is the core skill that seven out of 10 companies considered essential in 2025.
What does AI adoption change in a manager's job?
The balance moves from doing to directing. In BCG's 2026 survey of 11,749 workers in 14 markets, 47% said they spend more time managing and directing AI than doing the work itself, and 72% said AI has considerably changed skills expectations in their role. BCG also found 74% of frontline employees are regular AI users, up 23 percentage points on a year earlier.
Guidance is the weak point. BCG's 2026 survey found 66% of regular frontline users get limited or no guidance on what to do with the time AI saves them. Its 2025 survey found only 36% of employees feel adequately trained. In Naukri's AI at Work survey, 77% of professionals use AI at work at least sometimes and 79% are upskilling or plan to start soon, yet only 35% say their employer actively provides AI training.
Strategy counts for more than tools. BCG's 2026 survey found that a clear AI strategy lifts measurable business impact by 25 percentage points, while better tools alone lift it by about 5. IBM's 2026 study of 2,000 CEOs and senior leaders found 83% say AI success depends more on people's adoption than on technology, and 85% say all functional leaders must become technology experts in their domain.
What should a manager do in the next 12 months?
The evidence suggests a short list of habits. Choosing one process in the team and measuring it before changing anything matters because unclear business value is among the reasons Gartner gave in June 2025, as reported by W.Media, for predicting that many agentic AI projects will be cancelled. Writing the rules for AI use down matters because BCG's 2025 survey found 54% of employees would use AI tools even if not authorised. Real training time matters too: BCG's 2025 survey found employees who receive five or more hours of training are more likely to become regular AI users. The team also needs a decision in advance on what to do with the time AI saves. How to lead an AI pilot as a non-technical manager turns those habits into steps, and agentic AI in finance and operations teams covers what changes when software begins to act.
Managers who want to try building a small tool themselves can see how non-developers use AI coding agents and how to build an internal tool with AI without being an engineer. Everyday uses are covered in 15 ways to use AI at work in 2026.
Where does a structured programme fit?
Managers who prefer a taught sequence to self-study have one route in the AI Officer Programme, a live online programme by Vishlesan i-Hub Foundation, IIT Patna, delivered with Masai, for working managers and senior professionals. It covers generative AI, agentic AI, AI governance and responsible AI without requiring coding, in modules such as Generative AI for the Enterprise and Agentic AI for the Enterprise. The eligibility is minimum 1 year of full-time work experience, currently working in an organisation, and no coding background required. It grants no IIT Patna degree, credit or alumni status.
Frequently asked questions
What does the NASSCOM AI adoption index measure?
It is an industry measure that a PIB backgrounder of 12 February 2026 cites as finding 87% of enterprises in India actively using AI solutions. The index is a broad industry measure, so the figure shows how wide AI use is, not how deep. BCG's separate figure of about 26% at AI maturity at scale describes depth.
What are non-technical AI jobs in India?
The category is loose. PIB, citing the World Bank, names AI trainers, safety testers and prompt engineers as emerging roles in its February 2026 backgrounder, and Naukri's July 2026 report lists AI Product Manager and AI Trainer among titles recruiters search for. Microsoft's India findings add Agent Boss and AI Workflow Designer, which are Microsoft's own labels.
How does India compare with other countries on AI adoption?
On worker surveys, India sits near the top. BCG's 2025 survey of workers in 11 countries found 92% of respondents in India using AI regularly, the highest of any country, and its 2026 survey again placed India above the global average. The World Economic Forum had 96% of surveyed organisations in India running AI programmes, against 88% globally. Online samples lean towards connected white-collar workers.
Are most Indian AI projects still pilots?
The surveys differ. EY and CII found 47% of 200 organisations with multiple GenAI use cases live in production and 23% in pilot. A preliminary MIT NANDA report found only 5% of organisations had reached production with custom tools, from a smaller interview sample. Counting rules, sample size and date all change the answer, so compare definitions first.
Will AI replace managers?
The figures describe changing tasks, not replacement. BCG's 2026 survey found 65% of managers and leaders believe agents will take over at least half of their job within three years, but that is a belief. The same survey found 47% already spend more time directing AI than doing the work, which points to a changing job. A Danish study found no earnings or hours effect so far.
