Does a business analyst need coding? What Indian postings ask

Does a business analyst need coding? IIBA ranks communication first, while internship postings name Excel and Python and 40% of analytics postings cite AI.

Do analysts need to code?

A business analyst needs no code for requirements and stakeholder work, SQL once the job involves querying data, and light Python for analysis. IIBA's 2026 survey ranks communication first and critical thinking second among skills analysts rely on, while CXOToday's report on a NASSCOM-Indeed study lists Excel and Python among skills named in internship postings.

Does a business analyst need coding? The answer by task

Coding depth depends on the task, so the table splits the job into its parts. The depth column is a rough guide, not a measured requirement.

The pattern is a gradient. The closer a task sits to the business question, the less code it needs, and the closer it sits to building models, the more it needs. Most analyst roles mix several rows, which is why postings differ so much.

Is an analyst role workable with no interest in deep coding?

For a large part of the work, yes. The IIBA 2026 survey of 2,120 professionals in 122 countries puts communication, critical thinking, problem-solving, listening and stakeholder engagement in its top five, and none of them is a coding skill. WEF's India profile found 79% of surveyed employers listing analytical thinking as a core skill of 2025.

CXOToday's coverage of the NASSCOM and Indeed report of May 2026 lists data analytics and visualisation among the top skills across industries, and lists AI, Python, machine learning, Azure and TensorFlow as the top skills in tech AI roles. One reading is that analysis and visualisation are broad skills while the heavier coding sits in AI-role postings.

The limit is that more technical analyst roles do ask for code, and a candidate who refuses all of it narrows the field. An engineering graduate with no coding history, or a commerce graduate as covered in business analyst after BCom, starts from the same place as anyone else.

How much SQL and Python do analyst skill lists name?

SQL appears through querying. LinkedIn's Skills on the Rise 2026 for India, as reported by Storyboard18 on 24 February 2026, places querying and database optimisation in its data and analytics cluster. NASSCOM's October 2026 study of 200 Indian enterprises names poor data quality among the top concerns on agentic AI, and 67% of them want data engineering skills.

Python appears in early-career and AI-linked lists. CXOToday's coverage of the NASSCOM and Indeed report names Python among internship skills in demand, and lists AI, Python, machine learning, Azure and TensorFlow as top skills in technology AI roles.

Light Python in practice means reading files, cleaning columns, grouping and summarising data, and drawing simple charts. That is a different job from building production models. NASSCOM's 2025 compensation survey, run with Deloitte, found that expectations of campus hires have moved over three years from basic coding and cloud fundamentals to advanced data analytics and AI/ML. A wider view of whether code is still worth learning is in is coding still worth learning after AI.

Excel, Power BI and dashboards: how much of the job needs no code?

A good share of it. Excel is named in the internship skill list, and NASSCOM and Indeed's skills analysis, as covered by CXOToday, includes data analytics and visualisation among the top skills across industries. LinkedIn's India cluster adds data storytelling.

In the CXOToday coverage of the May 2026 NASSCOM and Indeed report, visualisation is a cross-industry skill, while Python and machine learning appear in the tech AI list. A dashboard built in Power BI needs formulas and data modelling, which is a form of logic, but it is not conventional programming. A candidate who dislikes code can still build a strong portfolio here, then add SQL when a project demands it.

One learning order for a non-coder starts with Excel, then a dashboard tool, then SQL, and leaves Python for last. Each step produces a visible result, which keeps motivation up.

Data work is also expanding around analysts. NASSCOM's October 2026 study found 58% of enterprises running AI agents on existing datasets, with data quality the first concern named. Checking and explaining those datasets is work that analysts already do with spreadsheets and SQL, and it needs judgement more than advanced programming.

Where do machine learning and AI enter, and who builds them?

Analysts are more likely to use AI than to build it. IIBA's 2026 survey found the most common AI uses among analysts were drafting and formatting (28%), communication and documentation (25%) and idea generation or problem-solving (22%). None of those needs code.

Building sits with specialists. In NASSCOM's October 2026 study, 71% of enterprises said they need AI/ML and agent engineering capabilities and 67% data engineering skills. TeamLease Digital's Skills and Salary Primer FY2026-27, built on 37,000 tech and digital roles across 18 cities, says only 16% of IT professionals in India hold AI skills and 39% of core digital skills will change by 2030.

Exposure in postings is rising, and it is uneven. Indeed's India report, as covered by IANS on 10 March 2026, found 40% of data and analytics postings referencing AI in January 2026, against 29% for software development.

Across all postings the share is smaller, at about 14% in January 2026 against 12.8% three months earlier, though 55% of occupational categories now reference AI, up from 36% a year earlier. In WEF's India survey, 62% of employers listed AI and big data among core skills of 2025 and 94% expect it to be of increasing use by 2030. LinkedIn's Skills on the Rise 2026 for India, as reported by Storyboard18 on 24 February 2026, includes prompt engineering, workflow automation, LLMOps, AutoML and API integration among rising skills.

Where does a business analytics programme fit for a non-coder?

The wider outlook is in is business analytics a good career in India in 2026, and where jobs are growing is mapped in where business analyst jobs in India are growing in 2026. Whether a certification adds value is weighed in is a business analytics certification worth it in 2026.

Candidates who prefer a taught route can look at Masai's Business Analytics with AI certification programme, offered in collaboration with MICA. It is a certification programme in business analytics with AI, taught live online, covering Excel, SQL, Python, Power BI, statistics and applied machine learning.

Frequently asked questions

Does an IT business analyst require coding?

Usually not as a core duty. IIBA's 2026 survey ranks communication first and critical thinking second among skills business analysts rely on. IT-facing roles, though, work closely with engineers, so reading SQL and understanding how systems pass data helps. Roles that lean towards data analysis ask for more code, and internship postings name Python.

Do business analysts need to code?

Not always, and the amount varies by task. Requirements and stakeholder work needs none, reporting needs little, and querying needs SQL. In CXOToday's coverage of the May 2026 NASSCOM and Indeed report, data analytics and visualisation are among the top skills across industries, while Python and machine learning are named among the top skills for tech AI roles.

Is Python required for a business analyst?

It is not required for every role, but it is common in data-leaning ones. CXOToday's coverage of the NASSCOM and Indeed report names Python among internship skills in demand, and among top skills in technology AI roles. A candidate can start without it and add light Python once SQL and dashboards are in place.

Can a business analyst work without SQL?

Some roles, mainly requirements and process work, can. As roles move towards data, SQL becomes harder to avoid: LinkedIn's India data and analytics cluster, as reported by Storyboard18, names querying and database optimisation. The safest course for a fresher is to learn the basics.

Do freshers need a computer science degree to become analysts?

No single degree is fixed. WEF's Future of Jobs Report 2025 found that 30% of employers operating in India expect to remove degree requirements, and 40% of employers in the NASSCOM and Indeed study preferred demonstrable AI skills or certifications over a degree. Evidence of skill from projects carries more weight than the degree title alone.
