Business analytics vs business analyst: what is the difference?

Business analytics vs business analyst: the discipline and the job compared, with WEF's 54% India growth figure and 40% AI mentions in data postings.

Analytics vs analyst

Business analytics is a discipline: using data, statistics and models to inform business decisions. A business analyst is a job: turning business needs into requirements, reports and recommendations. The two overlap. IIBA's 2026 survey of 2,120 professionals ranks communication first among analysts' skills, while LinkedIn's Skills on the Rise 2026 for India groups querying, data storytelling and data-driven decision-making into one data and analytics cluster.

How do business analytics and the business analyst role compare side by side?

The table separates the discipline from the role across what each covers, what employers weigh and how the numbers look. The survey bases differ, so the columns are not like-for-like, and the first two rows are definitions, not survey results.

DimensionBusiness analytics (the discipline)Business analyst (the role)

In practice the line blurs. A posting titled business analyst can ask for SQL and dashboards, and a posting titled data analyst can ask for stakeholder work. The figures above come from different groups, so any claim that one title is simply the other is too strong.

Which jobs does business analytics lead to, and who hires for them?

The discipline feeds several occupations, and WEF names three that matter here. Its India profile projects 2025 to 2030 net growth of 176% for AI and machine learning specialists, 54% for data analysts and scientists and 17% for business intelligence analysts, among surveyed employers operating in India. Globally, WEF ranks big data specialists first among the fastest-growing jobs. These are employer-survey projections off small bases, not vacancy counts.

Hiring evidence points the same way. Naukri JobSpeak recorded AI and ML roles up 20% year on year in September 2026 while its overall index rose 2%. CXOToday reported that 63% of employers in the NASSCOM and Indeed study saw a year-on-year rise in AI-related hiring, led by BFSI and telecommunications.

Zinnov and NASSCOM counted 2,117 global capability centres in FY2026, employing 2.36 million people, across all functions, which shows the size of that sector and not analyst demand. The business analyst role itself is widely recognised: 81% of IIBA's 2026 respondents said business analysis is formally recognised in their organisation, a share unchanged for three consecutive years. Which skills does each side weigh: communication or data-driven decisions?

The two rankings come from different populations. IIBA surveyed 2,120 business analysis professionals in 122 countries, and communication topped its 2026 list for the third year running, with critical thinking second and problem-solving, listening and stakeholder engagement completing the top five. foundit's December 2025 Hiring Snapshot is a table of the top skills for 0-3 years of experience.

foundit lists Python (22% share), SQL/Databases (18%), Java (16%), Cloud (12%) and Data Analysis (10%), and the share is foundit's own measure across the skills it tracks. LinkedIn's India data, reported by Storyboard18 on 24 February 2026, groups querying, database optimisation, data storytelling and data-driven decision-making into one cluster. One list describes how analysts work with people, and the others describe the data skills that early-career postings and rising-skill data point to.

They share a middle. WEF's India survey found 79% of employers listing analytical thinking as a core skill of 2025, and LinkedIn's India data cluster, as reported by Storyboard18 in February 2026, pairs querying and database optimisation with data storytelling. Turning data into something a decision-maker can act on appears on both sides. How much code each side needs is the subject of what Indian postings ask on coding for business analysts.

How is AI pulling the two together in 2026 postings?

Data and analytics postings show the most AI exposure. Indeed's India report, as covered by IANS on 10 March 2026, found 40% of data and analytics postings referencing AI in January 2026, against 29% for software development. Storyboard18's October 2025 report on Indeed data had put the figure at almost 39% against 23% for September 2025.

Across the whole market the shift is wider. The same IANS coverage said 55% of occupational categories now reference AI, up from 36% a year earlier. In the NASSCOM and Indeed report, 86% of employers had seen some impact of AI on job roles and 35% had seen significant redefinition.

Analysts already use it. IIBA's 2026 survey found 69% saying AI is positively affecting their careers, down from 74% in 2025, and the top uses were drafting and formatting (28%) and communication and documentation (25%). LinkedIn's India rising skills, as reported by Storyboard18 on 24 February 2026, include prompt engineering, workflow automation and AutoML. Whether the role itself is at risk is examined in will AI replace business analysts.

Do data scientists look down on analysts, and is that common?

A status gap between titles is a workplace matter and varies by organisation. What can be checked is how the figures group the roles. WEF counts data analysts and scientists as one occupation group in its India projection, at 54% net growth. foundit's early-career table lists SQL/Databases at 18% and Data Analysis at 10%, which are the day-to-day tools of analysts. Neither places one role above the other.

Which should a fresher choose, and where does a business analytics with AI programme fit?

A fresher drawn to people, requirements and process can aim at the role. A fresher drawn to datasets, models and tools can aim at the discipline. Both can start from Excel, SQL and a dashboard tool, so the choice can be made after a first project instead of before it. The broader question of whether the field is worth entering is covered in is business analytics a good career in India in 2026.

On qualifications, no single degree is fixed. The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics lists a bachelor's degree as the typical entry-level education for management analysts, a consulting-style occupation. WEF found that 30% of employers operating in India expect to remove degree requirements, and 40% of employers in the NASSCOM and Indeed study preferred demonstrable AI skills or certifications over a degree.

Masai's Business Analytics with AI certification programme is a certification programme in business analytics with AI, offered in collaboration with MICA and taught live online, covering Excel, SQL, Python, Power BI, statistics and applied machine learning.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between business analysis and business analytics?

Business analysis is the work of understanding a business need and recommending a solution, which is why IIBA's 2026 survey ranks communication and critical thinking first and second.
