Business analyst tools in 2026: what Indian skills reports name

Business analyst tools in 2026: NASSCOM and Indeed list Excel and Python among internship skills. What Excel, SQL, BI, Python and AI each add.

Business analyst tool stack

Skills reports are the nearest guide to the tools Indian business analysts need. CXOToday's coverage of a NASSCOM and Indeed report in May 2026 lists Microsoft Excel and Python among the skills in demand for internships, which rose 103% in postings over three years. LinkedIn's 2026 India list, via Storyboard18, names querying and data storytelling.

What tools do business analysts use in 2026?

The evidence comes in pieces, and it helps to say what each piece measures. CXOToday's coverage of the NASSCOM and Indeed report, published on 21 May 2026, covers internship postings and employer skill lists. LinkedIn's Skills on the Rise 2026 for India, as reported by Storyboard18 on 24 February 2026, covers skills growing on member profiles and in hiring. IIBA's 2026 Global State of Business Analysis Report, published on 25 June 2026, covers what business analysis professionals rank as their most important skills, and its sample is global and not Indian postings.

The table below sets each tool or skill against the publisher that names it.

Whether those tools are asked for in a particular sector depends on the employer. The demand by sector is set out in the post on where business analyst jobs are growing.

Are Excel and SQL still the first tools to learn?

The evidence supports them as a base, though it does not rank them. Excel appears in the NASSCOM and Indeed internship skills list, which matters because internship postings are one route into analyst work. CXOToday's coverage says those postings rose 103% over three years, though the article does not state the period basis.

Querying is the SQL side. LinkedIn's data and analytics cluster for India names querying and database optimisation, and for most analysts querying a database means SQL. The same cluster names data storytelling and data-driven decision-making, which are about what is done with the result.

Indian employer sources put those higher-level skills near the top. In WEF's Future of Jobs Report 2025 India profile, 79% of surveyed employers list analytical thinking as a core skill of 2025, and the NASSCOM-Deloitte compensation survey for 2025 puts strategic thinking and analytical skills among the top skills sought. Those are shares of surveyed employers and not counts of analyst postings, so they show what employers say they value and not what individual postings list.

The sensible reading is that Excel and SQL are the entry tools and decision-making is what they are used for. The move from an operations role into analyst work is covered in the route from operations to business analysis.

Power BI or Tableau: which dashboard tool should be learned first?

The reports name the category and not the brands: CXOToday's coverage of the NASSCOM and Indeed report lists data analytics and visualisation among the top skills across industries, and LinkedIn's India data cluster names data storytelling. For a candidate, that means the skill is building a dashboard that answers a business question, and either tool teaches it.

The practical choice follows the target employer. Check postings in the sector and city targeted and learn the tool that appears there. The blog's comparison of Power BI and Tableau in 2026 covers pay and jobs for each product.

One caution applies. Learning a tool's menus is not the same as learning to choose a chart or define a KPI. LinkedIn's inclusion of data storytelling in the analytics cluster points the same way.

How much Python does a business analyst need?

It depends on the role. The CXOToday coverage of the NASSCOM and Indeed report lists Python among internship skills in demand and among the top skills in tech AI roles, alongside AI, machine learning, Azure and TensorFlow. The NASSCOM-Deloitte compensation survey of 2025 says technical proficiency expected of campus hires has moved over three years from basic coding and cloud fundamentals to advanced data analytics, AI/ML and DevOps. A reasonable reading is that those are tech employers, where analyst roles sit close to engineering.

Business-facing roles weigh it differently. IIBA's 2026 Global State of Business Analysis Report, published on 25 June 2026, ranks communication first, critical thinking second, and problem-solving, listening and stakeholder engagement completing the top five. Python is not in that top five.

So enough Python to clean and reshape a dataset, automate a repeated report and read someone else's code is a reasonable target for a business-facing role, and more for a tech-adjacent one. How the technical depth interacts with AI is covered in whether AI will replace analysts.

Where do generative AI, prompt engineering and agents fit in the analyst stack?

They are now on the skills lists. The CXOToday coverage lists Gen AI and LLMs, including prompt engineering, among the top skills across industries, next to cloud and infrastructure integration, MLOps and deployment, and data analytics and visualisation. LinkedIn's Skills on the Rise 2026 for India lists prompt engineering, workflow automation, LLMOps, AutoML and API integration among top national rising skills. Indeed's India report, as covered by IANS on 10 March 2026, found 40% of data and analytics postings referenced AI in January 2026.

In IIBA's 2026 survey, analysts use AI most for drafting and formatting (28%) and for communication and documentation (25%). That is where a prompting habit pays off first.

Agents are the newer layer, and enterprises are short of the skills behind them. In NASSCOM's October 2026 study of 200 India-headquartered enterprises, 71% said they need AI/ML and agent engineering capabilities and 67% data engineering skills. The top concerns listed are poor data quality, model trust, safe data sharing, skills availability and integration with the existing tech stack. An analyst who can define data quality rules and test an agent's output is addressing the stated concerns.

What do interviews test compared with what people study?

The surveys point to a gap between tool tutorials and business judgement. IIBA's analysts rank communication and critical thinking first and second. LinkedIn's India data cluster pairs querying with data storytelling and data-driven decision-making. WEF's Future of Jobs Report 2025 India profile found 79% of surveyed employers list analytical thinking as a core skill of 2025.

A candidate who has studied features of a tool but cannot explain what a dashboard means for a decision will feel that gap. The blog's piece on business analytics skills that support better decisions covers that side.

One reasonable learning order, a judgement and not a surveyed ranking, is:

  1. Excel and analytical basics, the entry skills in the internship list.
  2. SQL for querying, then one business intelligence tool for dashboards.
  3. Python for cleaning data and automating reports.
  4. Generative AI for drafting and documentation, with every figure checked by hand.
  5. Agents and workflow automation, once the earlier layers are in place.

Certification Program in Business Analytics with Gen & Agentic AI is one structured route. It is an online certification from BITS School of Management (BITSoM), offered in partnership with Masai, with live online classes and an optional campus workshop, covering business analytics, SQL and Python, data visualisation in Tableau and Power BI, machine learning, generative AI, prompt engineering and building AI agents. Its modules include Data Visualization & Case Studies, Python Crash Course for GenAI, Introduction to LLM & Prompt Engineering and AI agent building.

Self-study works too, and portfolio projects count in both routes. Analytics versus MBA as a route is compared in business analytics versus an MBA.

Frequently asked questions

What are the top tools used by business analysts?

Microsoft Excel and Python are named among internship skills in demand, querying in LinkedIn's data cluster, data analytics and visualisation among the top skills across industries in the NASSCOM and Indeed report, and Gen AI with prompt engineering among top skills.

Should a fresher learn Power BI or Tableau first?

Either teaches the underlying skill. CXOToday's coverage of the NASSCOM and Indeed report, published on 21 May 2026, lists data analytics and visualisation among top skills without ranking products. A fresher can check postings in the target sector and city and learn the tool that appears there more often.

Does a business analyst need Python?

Not for every role. IIBA's 2026 survey ranks communication and critical thinking above any tool, and Python is not in its top five skills. But NASSCOM and Indeed list Python among internship skills and top tech AI skills, which suggests tech-adjacent roles ask for it more often.

Which AI tools should business analysts learn?

The reports name skills and not products. LinkedIn's Skills on the Rise 2026 for India lists prompt engineering and workflow automation, and IIBA's 2026 survey shows drafting and formatting (28%) as the most common AI use. Learning to prompt, check outputs and document the result covers the common cases.

Are Excel and SQL enough in 2026?

They remain the base, but the evidence points past them. NASSCOM's 2025 compensation survey says campus hires are expected to bring advanced data analytics and AI/ML skills, and Indeed's India data, as covered by IANS, had 40% of data and analytics postings referencing AI in January 2026.
