Business analyst after BCom: how commerce graduates break in
Business analyst after BCom: Naukri JobSpeak showed insurance hiring up 28% in February 2026 and BFSI roles up 29% in August. See the skills to add.
A BCom graduate can become a business analyst in India by adding SQL, advanced Excel and a dashboard tool to the accounting and finance knowledge already in hand. Hiring in insurance and BFSI grew in Naukri JobSpeak readings: it showed insurance hiring up 28% year on year in February 2026, and its BFSI, investments and trading function up 29% in August 2026.
Can a commerce graduate become a business analyst?
The degree is one of several things employers weigh. The World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025 found that 30% of employers operating in India expect to adopt skills-based hiring by removing degree requirements, against 19% globally. In the NASSCOM and Indeed report of May 2026, 40% of employers preferred demonstrable AI skills or certifications over a degree, and CXOToday reported that 32% weigh skills, certifications and degrees equally.
Degrees keep their weight with many employers. GMAC's global 2025 survey of 1,108 recruiters in 46 countries found that 86% of consulting employers plan some MBA hiring, and the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics lists a bachelor's degree as the typical entry-level education for management analysts. What a degree does not supply by default is the technical toolkit, which is the gap the rest of this page addresses.
The job title also needs care, because analytics as a discipline and business analyst as a role are different things; business analytics versus business analyst separates them. Students still choosing a degree can read why commerce and arts students are rethinking their post-12th plans.
Which skills are most valuable after BCom, and what do analysts earn?
Analytical thinking leads the evidence. WEF's India profile found 79% of surveyed employers listing it as a core skill of 2025, and IIBA's 2026 survey ranks communication first and critical thinking second among skills business analysts rely on. LinkedIn's Skills on the Rise 2026 for India, as reported by Storyboard18 on 24 February 2026, groups querying, data storytelling and data-driven decision-making into one data and analytics cluster.
Indeed India's average base salary for business analysts was Rs 8,90,431 a year as of 16 October 2026, drawn from 631 salaries across all experience levels. AmbitionBox's 2026 data shows business analysts averaging Rs 7.3 lakh at 1 to 3 years of experience and Rs 12 lakh at 6 to 9 years, from employee-reported salaries. These are market averages for the role, not fresher figures.
Commerce training adds something the averages do not capture. A BCom graduate already reads financial statements and costing sheets, which is domain knowledge that finance and insurance analyst roles use daily. That advantage is a reasoned strength, not a measured one. The longer path from analyst to manager is covered in the business analyst career path in India.
Where does commerce knowledge count in the hiring data?
Naukri JobSpeak, a monthly reading of postings on Naukri.com, showed uneven sector movement across 2026. Insurance led in February at 28% above a year earlier, then slowed to 19% in May and 12% in August, and Naukri described it as largely stable in September. Banking swung from down 15% in May to up 10% in August.
The table sets the readings side by side, with the questions analysts in each area typically work on. The last column lists the questions analysts in each area typically work on.
| Sector or function | Naukri JobSpeak readings, 2026 | Typical analyst questions |
|---|---|---|
| Insurance | Up 28% in February, up 19% in May, up 12% in August, largely stable in September | Premiums and claims |
| Banking and financial services | Down 15% in May, up 10% in August, largely stable in September | Lending and collections |
| BFSI, investments and trading (function) | Up 29% in August | Portfolio and transaction reporting |
| Retail | Up 14% in February, up 15% in August, largely stable in September | Sales and stock |
| Merchandising, retail and e-commerce (function) | Up 18% in September | Product mix and returns |
Naukri noted that festive-season timing flattered August, so the August readings are best read beside September's. All figures are sector or function totals across every role, not counts of analyst postings, and one portal does not stand for the whole market.
The same September release showed hiring declining in IT and software services (down 4%), pharma and biotech (down 4%), FMCG (down 4%) and healthcare (down 3%), while insurance, retail, banking and financial services and real estate held largely stable. These are totals for all roles, so they show where hiring moved and not where analyst vacancies sit.
The picture is mixed. Indeed Hiring Lab's October 2025 update found banking and finance postings down 25.6% over the three months to October 2025 and retail down 16.7%. Its India data skews towards tech, management and sales. On the other side, CXOToday reported that 63% of employers in the NASSCOM and Indeed study saw a year-on-year rise in AI-related hiring, led by BFSI and telecommunications.
What is the technical gap, and in what order should it close?
The gap is technical and narrow. CXOToday's coverage of the NASSCOM and Indeed report names analytical skills, Microsoft Excel and Python among internship skills in demand, and LinkedIn's India data cluster, as reported by Storyboard18 in February 2026, names querying, database optimisation, data storytelling and data-driven decision-making. India's internship postings rose 103% over three years in the same coverage, which makes internships a practical first door.
One reasonable order: Excel teaches the logic of tables, SQL applies that logic to databases, a dashboard tool turns the result into something a manager can read, and Python handles larger and messier files. A BCom graduate who already uses Excel for accounts starts the sequence one step ahead.
CXOToday's coverage of the NASSCOM and Indeed report of May 2026 lists data analytics and visualisation among the top skills across industries, while the top skills in tech AI roles are AI, Python, machine learning, Azure and TensorFlow. One reading of that split is that dashboards come before advanced code. How much machine learning an analyst needs after that is the subject of how much machine learning a business analyst needs.
Which three analyst projects can a commerce graduate build from public data?
Take a hypothetical BCom graduate in Indore building a portfolio for insurance and banking interviews. Each project should start from a business question, use an open or sample dataset, and end in a written recommendation, since IIBA's 2026 survey puts communication first. The general roadmap is in how to become a business analyst with no experience.
- A retail or e-commerce sales dashboard that shows which product lines and regions drive revenue, then recommends where to change the product mix.
- An insurance premium and claims analysis in SQL that asks which customer groups renew and which lapse.
- A banking customer segmentation in Python that groups customers by balances and activity and proposes one targeted offer per group.
The choice of sector can follow the hiring data above. Merchandising, retail and e-commerce roles were up 18% in September 2026 and insurance was up 28% in February and 19% in May, so a project in either gives an interviewer familiar ground.
Where does a business analytics programme fit after BCom?
Commerce graduates who prefer a taught route to self-study can look at Masai's Business Analytics with AI certification programme, offered in collaboration with MICA. It is a certification programme in business analytics with AI, taught live online, covering Excel, SQL, Python, Power BI, statistics and applied machine learning. A certificate sits beside project work and domain knowledge, and does not replace either.
Frequently asked questions
Is big data a good career option for a commerce graduate?
Mostly through analyst roles rather than engineering ones. WEF's India profile projects net growth of 54% for data analysts and scientists from 2025 to 2030 among surveyed employers, while NASSCOM's October 2026 survey found 67% of enterprises seeking data engineering skills. Those are projections and survey shares, not vacancy counts.
Is doing CS and BCom with business analytics a good option?
Skills and proof of work are weighed: 40% of employers in the NASSCOM and Indeed study preferred demonstrable AI skills or certifications over a degree, and 32% weigh all three equally. Skills and proof of work are what the surveys point to.
What can a commerce graduate do after BCom?
Analyst work is one option. Naukri JobSpeak showed insurance up 28% in February 2026, the BFSI, investments and trading function up 29% in August, and merchandising, retail and e-commerce roles up 18% in September. Those totals cover all roles in each area, so a candidate should check how many analyst postings a target employer actually lists.
What should a BCom Computer Applications graduate do next?
Turn the coursework into analyst-grade evidence. Internship postings named Excel and Python in CXOToday's May 2026 coverage of the NASSCOM and Indeed report, and LinkedIn's India cluster adds querying and data storytelling. SQL on real datasets, a dashboard tool and two projects in a growing sector make a reasonable next step.
Does a BCom graduate need coding to become a business analyst?
Less than many assume, though not none. IIBA's 2026 survey ranks communication and critical thinking as the top two skills, and CXOToday's coverage of the NASSCOM and Indeed report of May 2026 lists data analytics and visualisation among the top skills across industries. Internship postings still name Python, so light Python and SQL are worth adding for data-leaning roles.
