Top 5 Courses to Upskill This Summer

Top 5 Courses to Upskill This Summer

Here’s a question many students quietly wrestle with every summer:

What am I really doing with this time?

Your degree is in progress. The semester just ended. And somewhere between WhatsApp chats and Netflix binges, there’s this quiet feeling that everyone else is moving forward while you’re stuck.

That feeling is important. It’s telling you something.

This summer, one program is doing what most ed-tech in India hasn’t: offering five of the most in-demand career tracks, right inside an IIT campus in the Himalayas. The curriculum is tough enough to match semester courses and it’s open to students who haven’t cleared JEE.

This program is Himshikhar 2026, a 2-month fully residential summer program run by CCE, IIT Mandi in partnership with Masai. You live on the IIT Mandi campus in Kamand Valley, Himachal Pradesh. Learn from IIT faculty. Build real projects. Earn an official IIT Mandi certification.

Here’s a quick look at the five tracks and who they’re really for.

1. Software Development with AI, For the “I’ll learn to code next month” crowd

You’re comfortable using tech, but you don’t know how to build it yet.

Maybe you’ve started tutorials and saved YouTube playlists but never finished them. Life gets busy, motivation dips, and the tabs close.

The real issue is that structure is missing. Online courses expect you to stay consistent and push through alone and most people can’t.

This track is built for beginners with just a 12th pass. Over two months, you’ll learn Python, HTML/CSS, React, FastAPI, PostgreSQL, and LLM API integration. By the end, you’ll build a full-stack Public Grievance Portal and demo it live.

No hand-holding tutorials. Something you built yourself.

If you’ve been saying “I’ll learn to code” for years, this is your chance.

2. AI & Machine Learning, For those who know the theory but can’t build yet

You know the theory. You've done the reading, followed along with the examples, maybe even passed a few assessments. And yet, when faced with a blank notebook and a raw dataset  you freeze. That freeze is the gap between knowing something and being able to use it.

The AI & Machine Learning track closes that gap. It runs from classical ML with scikit-learn through deep learning, computer vision, NLP, Generative AI, and MLOps deployment. The IIT Mandi faculty teaching this track researchers like Dr. Aditya Nigam (PhD IIT Kanpur) and Dr. Arnav Bhavsar (postdoc at GE Global Research), they don't teach to tests, they teach the way researchers do: by asking harder questions until you find the answer yourself.

The capstone projects here are a Smart Energy Forecast model, there are production-grade applications with real deployment pipelines.

This track is for the person who already knows the vocabulary and needs the reps. Two months of building under IIT faculty supervision will do more for your portfolio than two more years of online courses.

3. Agentic AI Systems, For those wanting to be ahead of the tech curve

Agentic AI is the next big thing, AI that plans, decides, and acts across multiple steps, not just answers questions.

Right now, few engineers can build these systems, but demand is soaring.

This track covers prompt engineering, RAG systems, multi-agent workflows, and safety frameworks. Projects include a Personal Finance Agent and an IRCTC Travel Concierge.

If you’re a 2nd-year student or beyond thinking about the future of tech, this is the track to get serious about.

4. Data Science, For anyone who works with numbers but wants to do more

You’ve done basic stats, maybe opened datasets in Excel, but real data science is about asking the right questions and turning messy data into decisions.

This track goes deeper into Pandas, statistical inference, machine learning, deep learning intuition, and MLOps pipelines. You’ll build projects like a Paddy Crop Health Monitor and Sentiment Analysis Engine.

Whether you’re into engineering, science, or business, data skills are essential and this program will give you a solid foundation faster than you’d expect.

5. Entrepreneurship & Venture Building - For idea people ready to build

Got an idea but don’t know what to do next? You’re not alone.

This track is not going to be just theory, but It is going to be eight weeks of doing what real founders do: identifying problems, validating ideas with real users, building MVPs, planning go-to-market strategies, and pitching in front of a tough panel.

Led by IIT Mandi’s Dean of Finance and experienced entrepreneurs, this is for anyone ready to stop talking and start building.

Why Himshikhar is more than just a course

Here’s something the course pages don’t usually mention: the most important part of Himshikhar isn’t just the track you pick. It’s the sixty days you spend there.

Two months living on an IIT campus in Kamand Valley, nestled 1,000 meters up in the Himalayas, surrounded by pine forests and overlooking the Uhl river, changes the way you work. The noise and distractions of city life fade away. The constant pressure to always be reachable disappears. And being part of a group of over 1,000 students, all choosing to be there instead of going home, sets a higher bar for what “good enough” really means.

The IIT Mandi professors aren’t delivering pre-recorded lectures. They’re right there with you, live, asking questions. The PhD teaching assistants running your afternoon labs are researchers who are deep into their own studies, and they won’t just hand you answers. They push you to find them yourself.

Then there are the Night Owl sessions  informal, unscheduled moments when curious minds stay late in the lab at 11 PM, working through something challenging. That’s often where the deepest learning happens.
