This Masai Graduate is Coding the Path to Ayurveda with Kapiva
Hurmit's journey exemplifies skill-based hiring and its potential to scale an organisation. With India's tech talent gap widening, Masai continues its mission to bridge this gap with outcome-driven education.
With its deeply-rooted origins in India's ancient wellness wisdom, Ayurveda holds immense potential to be India’s avenue for soft power. It’s evident by the fact that the market for Indian Ayush products is projected to reach a staggering US$23 billion by the end of FY 23. [1]
Kapiva, a D2C brand, is slowly but surely establishing its prominence in this burgeoning market. By marrying traditional Ayurvedic wisdom with modern science, it aims to deliver products that cater to the wellness needs of young individuals.
As Kapiva transitions from a product company to a lifestyle one, championing Ayurveda and yoga, the company's need for proficient tech professionals becomes crucial. To tackle this challenge, the company turned to Masai, placing its bet on skill-first hiring, and brought on board Hurmit, a BA graduate from Hissar, Haryana.
Hurmit at Masai
Hurmit's journey from a government job aspirant to becoming a pivotal figure in Kapiva's tech team is an inspiring tale. When his job preparations didn’t bear fruit, he started exploring other options. That’s when one of his friends recommended software development considering his strong background in logical reasoning and data interpretation.
Though he was learning HTML and CSS from YouTube videos, the search for a structured curriculum led him to Masai.
The initial phase of his journey at Masai was smooth, thanks to his familiarity with HTML and CSS. However, advancing into the world of Node.js and React presented challenges. The comprehensive learning model, combined with relentless support from the instructors, enabled Hurmit to overcome these hurdles and solidify his tech foundation.
During placements, he cleared the interview rounds for 3 companies but chose Kapiva as the stepping-stone for his tech career.
Hurmit At Kapiva
At Kapiva, Hurmit began his tech journey with a team of 13-14 colleagues, which has since grown substantially. Among his most notable contributions include the development of an alert-based system during a challenging transition of the website from BigCommerce to Next.js. This system, which sends alerts on Slack or email in case of errors, is now integrated into several other features across the company.
He also worked on the development of a comprehensive in-house quiz platform that would replace Typeform, within a stringent timeline of 40 days. This accomplishment not only optimised costs for Kapiva but also provided an effective tool for the rest of the company to use.
Appreciation & Accolades
Throughout his tenure at Kapiva, Hurmit’s exceptional performance has been appreciated and acknowledged by his superiors. So much so that his manager even entrusted him with the responsibility of interviewing potential hires.
He also won the ‘New Joinee Award’ at the Kapiva Townhall meeting for his work in the first few months.
Final Thoughts
Hurmit's journey elucidates the essence of skill-based hiring and its potential to scale an organisation. With India's tech talent gap widening[2], Masai continues its mission to bridge this gap with outcome-driven education.
