Kiran’s background:

Kiran, 25, belongs to the green city of Calicut in Kerala. While he spent most of his schooling years in his hometown, he also moved to Rajasthan for 2 years due to his father’s job relocation. At present, he works at Urban Piper as an Associate software engineer where he is building different programs, and fixing bugs by applying various tool stacks he learned at Masai.

Initial interest in computers:

In school, Kiran was an average student- he did not feel much inclined towards scoring well- he focused more on enjoying himself. He found his initial love for computers in class 5th when his father installed a desktop at home. He would play games all-day and would feel intrigued by the different components of the machine. Soon after, he started exploring it more.

By class 10th, he equipped himself with all the basics of operating a computer system, and soon he decided that he wanted to pursue engineering after school.

The engineering life:

Kiran opted for B.E in Electronics and Communications to fulfill his passion for machines. However, he soon realized that his curriculum mostly focused on theory and not the practical application of knowledge. While this irked him for a while, he also explored through his other friends that there was more scope in the world of programming and development than in the field he was graduating in.

Hence, after college, he moved to Bangalore with a friend to pursue a short course in software development where he would finally be able to execute his skills out of books. However, the pandemic of Covid-19 led to a nationwide lockdown, which meant that Kiran would have to wait for a long time to resume his lectures.

This is how he came across Masai School:

After a lot of contemplation, Kiran began searching for related course material online. During this time, he came across a post on Quora about Masai School and he found it intriguing.

He went through the website and the courses that were on offer. Going with his instinct and unbiased love for computers, he opted for the Full Stack Web Development program and got in soon. Moreover, he had nothing to lose as the course did not demand any fees from him- he only had to pay if he got a job worth INR 5 LPA or more after getting placed from Masai.

The Masai experience:

When Kiran joined Masai, he found the schedule to be very difficult to manage. In an attempt to keep up with the schedule of lectures and assignments given per week, he tried to dedicatedly follow the 9-9-6 schedule (12 hours, 6 days) for studying each week. It was in this manner that Kiran could spend a lot of time studying core concepts and working on practice problems or reviewing notes from class daily while spending some time each week focusing on more intense learning activities such as tutoring sessions, joining study groups, or doing homework with peers.

He learned all front-end and back-end components including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Python, MongoDB, and React. He also learned Data Structures & Algorithms and solved about 200 DSA problems on a regular basis throughout the course. (Learn the fundamentals of DSA)

For every question or challenge he faced in class, he’d reach out to the Masai faculty for help. Their guidance is what helped him stay motivated and reach the top of his game.

Time to get placed:

After finishing the course offered by Masai, Kiran got placed as an Associate Software Engineer at Urban Piper.

Though he was getting shortlisted by a few companies from day 1 of placements, he wasn’t able to find success initially. Later, he made a few changes to his resume and spent more time preparing for technical interviews with the help of his instructors at Masai. All the hard work bore fruits as he was finally able to crack the interviews for Urban Piper, the Bengaluru-based software company.

Words of advice:

To any aspiring coder wanting to join Masai, Kiran suggests that they shouldn’t have second thoughts as he is living proof that joining Masai can help them turn things around for the better. As he looks back at how far he has come from being a former struggler in a traditional college to now having a lucrative career- Kiran feels truly grateful to everyone at Masai who helped him get here- and he hopes other aspiring developers will find success too.
