Utilising talent effectively to switch careers - Vasudev’s transition story

Vasudev, a 2017 mechanical engineering graduate, realised he was not able to fully utilise his problem-solving skills after spending 3 years in a reputed mechanical engineering company.

Vasudev realised software engineering would be a domain where he would be able to utilise his skills much better. Thus, in order to upskill himself, he joined Masai’s full-stack web development course. One of his colleagues, who happened to be a Masai alumnus, recommended it to him.

After 30 weeks of intensive learning, Vasudev was hired by CallHub as a Software Engineer.

Here are the excerpts from his interview where he talks about his Masai experience, and his life before and after

What made you decide to switch your career?

Engineering helped me land a job as a Mechanical Engineer that served me well for 3 years. Although, the job made me realise that my talent and potential were not put to good use.

I was good at problem-solving. But, there was no way I was applying these skills on the job. I learned that web development was a domain where I could apply my skills and make a good career out of it. Thus, I decided to change my career.

How did you discover Masai School?

A colleague of mine recommended Masai School’s full-stack web development course. He was a Masai alumnus and had successfully made the switch to Software Engineering.

After researching about Masai School on YouTube, Quora, and LinkedIn. I left my job and joined Masai School’s full-stack web development course.

How is the placement process at Masai school?

The placement process at Masai School is smooth. It is well coordinated and the placement team is very supportive.

When I saw other students getting placed at comparatively lesser salary packages, I was worried. I had anticipated higher salary packages. I thought I would also end up getting placed with a low salary package. But, that did not happen. I was placed at CallHub as a Software Engineer with a handsome package. I learned that the amount of money you get paid depends on your skills.

What impressed you the most about Masai School?

I really liked the 9-9-6 method at Masai school. It made me a highly disciplined and organised person. I also liked the teaching methods of all the mentors. They focussed always on delivering quality teachings in a disciplined and organised manner. They have always been helpful and supportive. Teaching simplicity helps students like me who are from a non-technical background.

Apart from programming, Masai School focuses on teaching skills. Masai School’s CBST program helped me improve my communication skills and boost my confidence. This is impressive, given the initial reputation of Masai School as a coding boot camp.

What is your opinion on the 9-9-6 method of Masai School?

Masai’s 9-9-6 method of teaching is something that has been blown out of proportion by a lot of people. Statements such as “students are forced to sit in front of computers for twelve hours straight” are baseless.

At Masai, a typical day consists of an hour-long English lecture, one and a half hours of the contest, an hour of DSA, and a lunch break followed by three-hour-long coding classes. Next, students are supposed to work on daily assignments which are not mandatory.

Every student can learn at his own pace, thus allowing breathing space in between classes. Rather than exhausting, I found this to be helpful.
