Product owner vs product manager and which one to aim for
Product owner vs product manager: the Scrum Guide ties the owner to backlog and value, while Meesho's PM II posting adds a 3-month roadmap, GTM, metrics.
A product owner is a Scrum role: the Scrum Guide's November 2020 version makes the Product Owner accountable for maximising the value of the product that results from the Scrum Team's work, and for effective Product Backlog management. A product manager is a wider job. Meesho's PM II posting, listed on 18 August 2026, adds roadmap, go-to-market planning and product metrics to the duties.
What is the difference between a product owner and a product manager?
The two titles come from different places. Product owner is defined in the Scrum Guide by Ken Schwaber and Jeff Sutherland, as one accountability within a Scrum Team. Product manager is a job title that each employer defines for itself, so the definition lives in the job posting and not in a shared standard.
In the 12 Indian postings sampled, the duties centre on roadmaps and metrics, a wider remit than backlog management. Many Indian employers use "product manager" for the broader job and reserve "product owner" for the Scrum role when they use it at all.
The table compares the two on the points that differ. The PM column draws on live Indian postings checked on 30 October 2026, and the owner column on the Scrum Guide.
| Point | Product owner (Scrum Guide, November 2020) | Product manager (Indian postings, 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Accountability | Maximising the value of the product from the Scrum Team's work | Business metrics and customer outcomes (Razorpay PM II) |
| Main artefact | Product Backlog and its management | Roadmap, product requirement documents and backlog (Meesho PM I and II) |
| Time horizon | Not set by the Scrum Guide for this role | Roadmap with at least a 3-month forward view (Meesho PM II) |
| Who defines the role | The Scrum Guide, shared across teams | Each employer, in its own posting |
| Title in live postings | Not the title in the sample | Product manager in all 12 postings sampled |
The last row has a limit. The sample of 12 was built from product manager postings, so it says nothing about how often product owner appears as a title elsewhere on Indian job boards.
Does PM stand for product manager or project manager?
Both, depending on the context, which is the source of much of the confusion. The Association for Project Management in the UK defines project management as applying processes, methods, skills, knowledge and experience to achieve specific project objectives, with final deliverables constrained to a finite timescale and budget. It defines a project as a unique, transient endeavour.
A project manager delivers a fixed piece of work against time and budget. In the 12 Indian postings sampled, PM means product manager throughout, and the duties are roadmaps, metrics and go-to-market planning rather than delivery schedules. An existing Masai guide gives the full breakdown of product manager vs project manager, and a post on product manager vs program manager covers the programme manager comparison.
Where do the two roles overlap, and where do they split?
The overlap is the backlog and the people around it. Meesho's PM I posting, listed on 16 September 2026, asks for product requirement documents, backlogs and roadmaps, comfort with A/B experimentation, and good communication and stakeholder management. Paytm's UPI posting, listed on 14 September 2026, asks for the ability to write crisp PRDs and align cross-functional stakeholders. A Scrum product owner would recognise both lists.
The split comes with what sits around the backlog. Meesho's PM II posting lists problem prioritisation, MVP testing, go-to-market planning with marketing stakeholders, product metrics and a roadmap with at least a 3-month forward view. Razorpay's PM II posting for ads, first published on 1 September 2026, asks for ownership of business metrics and customer outcomes. Those are the commercial duties that the Scrum Guide's definition does not spell out.
Across the sample, roadmap ownership appears in all 12 postings, which makes it the most common duty. The backlog is the product owner's core, and the roadmap, the metrics and the launch are what the PM adds.
Both roles also share the friction that comes with them. A new head of product trying to move a team to a product-led model, or engineers who will not collaborate, are problems of stakeholder alignment before they are problems of process. Razorpay's senior posting, first published on 6 October 2026, asks for at least 2 years on growth or PLG initiatives, so product-led working is a named skill. Its PM II posting asks for the ability to work across technical and business stakeholders, which is the skill that these situations test.
LinkedIn's Skills on the Rise 2026 India list, published on 24 February 2026, also names Collaboration and Stakeholder Management among the fastest-growing skills across all roles.
Which is more senior, and when are they the same person?
In the Indian postings, seniority is set by years of experience and team size, not by the word in the title. Meesho's ladder runs from PM I, at 3+ years overall with 1+ in product management, to Group Product Manager at 8+ years overall with 6+ in product management and a direct team of product managers.
In a small team, one person often holds both roles: owning the backlog day to day while also setting the roadmap. That is a pattern of team size, not a rule, and the postings do not say how common it is. A large company may separate the roles, with an owner inside each Scrum Team and a manager across several.
A reader choosing between them can read the posting rather than the title. An owner role that asks for roadmap and metrics is a PM role under another name, and a PM role that asks only for backlog work is an owner role under a different one. Both can appear under either label, and a post on PM job descriptions shows the wording that twelve postings use.
Will AI replace product owners?
The evidence points to AI helping with routine tasks and documentation before prioritisation and planning. Atlassian's State of Product 2026 survey, published on 3 September 2025 and covering product teams in the US, France and Germany, found most teams use 1-3 AI tools daily and save about 2 hours a day, mainly on routine tasks and product documentation. It said AI is not yet helping with prioritisation, planning and advanced analytics. It is a vendor survey outside India.
Routine tasks and product documentation are what Atlassian's respondents described. Prioritisation, the part that needs context about users, engineers and the business, is the part respondents said AI had not yet reached. A post on agentic AI for product managers goes through how PMs are using AI agents.
Demand data points the same way. Lenny's Newsletter, analysing TrueUp data in March 2026, reported over 7,300 open PM roles at tech companies worldwide, the highest in over three years, and described demand for AI PMs as rising fast. Live Indian postings in October 2026 ask PMs for AI skills instead of dropping the role. This describes demand now and is not a forecast.
Which one should a candidate aim for, and how does pay compare?
For most candidates in India the practical target is the product manager title, because that is the title in the postings. A candidate working inside a Scrum Team can start as an owner and widen the remit into roadmap and metrics, and that widening is what the PM postings ask for. In the sample, no posting was entry level, so the route runs through experience either way.
The pay figures here cover product managers only, and they differ by method. AmbitionBox, using employee reports, showed a typical Product Manager range of Rs 22.2 lakh to Rs 24.6 lakh a year from 73.1k reported salaries on 29 October 2026. Indeed India, averaging salaries from job postings, showed Rs 13,24,013 a year from 143 salaries on 13 October 2026.
The two sit roughly Rs 9 lakh apart because of sample and method, which is why a single number should not be quoted alone. Neither figure describes a product owner. Naukri's JobSpeak for September 2026 showed hiring for 8-12 years of experience up 5% and for 4-7 years down 2%, all roles.
Where a product management programme fits
Product Management with AI is an online certification from BITS School of Management (BITSoM), offered in partnership with Masai, taught in live online classes with an optional campus workshop, covering product discovery, design and MVPs, building with agentic AI, Agile execution, go-to-market and product metrics.
Frequently asked questions
Which is better, PO or PM?
They are different scopes. The Scrum Guide makes the Product Owner accountable for product value and backlog management, while Indian PM postings add roadmap, metrics and go-to-market. Seniority in the postings follows years of experience, such as Meesho's PM I at 3+ years and Group PM at 8+.
Is product owner the same as product manager?
Not by definition. Product owner is a Scrum role defined in the Scrum Guide of November 2020, while product manager is an employer-defined job title. In small teams one person may hold both. Live Indian postings use product manager more broadly, so reading the duties matters more than the title.
Does PM stand for project or product manager?
It can mean either. The Association for Project Management defines a project as a unique, transient endeavour with a finite timescale and budget, and a project manager delivers that fixed piece of work. In the 12 postings sampled on 30 October 2026, PM meant product manager.
Will AI replace product owners?
Not on the current evidence. Atlassian's 2025 survey found AI saving teams about 2 hours a day on routine tasks and documentation, but not yet helping with prioritisation or planning. Open PM roles at tech companies worldwide were at a three-year high in March 2026 in the TrueUp data analysed by Lenny's Newsletter.
Who gets paid more, product owner or product manager?
The figures cover product managers alone. AmbitionBox's range was Rs 22.2 lakh to Rs 24.6 lakh a year from 73.1k salaries on 29 October 2026, and Indeed's average was Rs 13,24,013 from 143 posted salaries on 13 October 2026. Method and sample explain the gap.
