Product metrics and experimentation skills PM jobs in India ask for
Product metrics in Indian PM jobs: 4 of 12 live postings on 30 October 2026 named SQL, and Atlassian found only 60% of product teams experiment regularly.
Indian product manager postings ask for product metrics mainly as ownership of business metrics, with experiment design and SQL named in some. Four of the 12 live postings reviewed on 30 October 2026 named SQL. Paytm also names Amplitude, Mixpanel and CleverTap. Atlassian's survey of product professionals in the US and Europe found only 60% of teams make experimentation a regular part of their process.
What does data-driven mean in a PM job description?
In the postings, "data-driven" breaks into specific duties. Razorpay's Product Manager II - Ads posting (Bengaluru, first published 1 September 2026) asks for ownership of business metrics and customer outcomes, and an analytical and experimentation mindset. Meesho's Product Manager II posting (listed 18 August 2026) lists product metrics among its duties, alongside problem prioritisation, MVP testing and a roadmap with at least a 3-month forward view.
Meesho's Product Manager I (listed 16 September 2026) asks for comfort with A/B experimentation, product requirement documents, backlogs and roadmaps. Razorpay's Senior Product Manager posting (first published 6 October 2026) describes a "data-native PM" who writes SQL and builds dashboards.
All of this comes from a sample of 12 live postings at Meesho, Paytm, Razorpay, Zeta and InMobi. It is one day's read of five employers, so it shows what a few well-known companies wrote and does not speak for every PM job. Roadmap ownership appeared in all 12, which puts planning on the same footing as measurement.
Do product managers need SQL? Four postings say yes
Four of the 12 postings named SQL explicitly: Paytm's Pi Agents posting, Paytm's UPI posting, Razorpay's Senior PM posting and Zeta's PM II. The other eight did not name it, so SQL was named in a third of the sample.
Zeta's wording is the strictest. Its Product Manager II posting (Bangalore, listed 1 October 2026) asks for strong SQL, statistics and experiment design, and also makes at least 3 years of hands-on software development mandatory. That is one employer's bar for a US consumer banking product, not a rule for the market.
Paytm's UPI Product posting (Noida and Bangalore, listed 14 September 2026, 3-5 years) asks for comfort with SQL and product analytics tools. Its Pi Agents posting (Noida, listed 27 August 2026) asks for fluency in analytics suites, SQL and experiment design.
On the wider skills side, LinkedIn's Skills on the Rise 2026 for India, based on year-over-year growth from 1 December 2024 to 30 November 2025, lists Querying, Database Optimisation, Data Analysis, Data Storytelling and Data Ethics among its fastest-growing "Data & Analytics" skills. The list is cross-role, so it supports a direction and not a PM-specific requirement.
Which product analytics tools do Indian employers name?
Only Paytm's postings name specific analytics tools. The Pi Agents posting lists Amplitude, Mixpanel and CleverTap, and the UPI posting lists Mixpanel, Amplitude, Metabase "or equivalent". The "or equivalent" wording matters, since it signals that the underlying skill matters more than the product.
The postings from the other four employers name no specific analytics suite.
Tool lists in any course or posting are best treated as examples and not as a required stack.
How is experiment design asked for in PM roles?
Experiment design appears in four of the 12 postings, in different words. Meesho's PM I asks for comfort with A/B experimentation. Zeta asks for experiment design and statistics. Paytm's Pi Agents posting lists experiment design, and Razorpay's PM II asks for an experimentation mindset.
Atlassian gives the context from the employer side. Its State of Product 2026 blog, published 3 September 2025 and based on a survey of product managers, engineers, designers and program managers in the US, France and Germany, says only 60% of teams make experimentation a regular part of their process. The survey is a vendor's own, and the sample is outside India, so it is a reference point and not an Indian benchmark.
The same Atlassian survey found that 85% of product professionals feel they have a seat at the strategic table, and only 12% find driving measurable business results rewarding.
Which metrics and dashboards should a PM be able to build?
The postings do not list metric names such as retention or conversion. They describe outcomes: business metrics, customer outcomes, growth or PLG initiatives, product metrics. The table below sets out what each posting names, so the pattern is visible in one place.
| Role and company | Years asked | SQL named | Tools, experiments and metrics wording |
|---|---|---|---|
| Product Manager I, Meesho | 3+ overall, 1+ in product | No | A/B experimentation, PRDs, backlogs, roadmaps |
| Product Manager II, Meesho | 4+ overall, 4+ in product | No | Product metrics, MVP testing, 3-month roadmap view |
| Pi Agents - SMB, Paytm | 5-9 in product | Yes | Amplitude, Mixpanel, CleverTap, experiment design |
| UPI Product, Paytm | 3-5 in product | Yes | Mixpanel, Amplitude, Metabase, crisp PRDs |
| Product Manager II - Ads, Razorpay | 4-7 in product | No | Business metrics, experimentation mindset |
| Senior Product Manager, Razorpay | 6+ in product | Yes | "Data-native PM", dashboards, growth or PLG |
| Product Manager II, Zeta | 6+ total, 3-4 in product | Yes | SQL, statistics, experiment design |
In the sample SQL is named from the 3-5 year Paytm UPI posting upward, and Razorpay's senior role is the only one that names dashboards.
A product analyst role is a neighbouring route. AmbitionBox shows Product Analyst salaries of Rs 11.6 lakh to Rs 12.8 lakh a year for 0 to 10 years of experience, based on 1.2k salaries on 29 October 2026. It is a small sample with a wide span, so it is indicative only.
For the broader requirement lists, what product manager job descriptions in India ask for is a good companion, and the existing guide to essential skills for aspiring product managers covers soft skills alongside the data ones.
What should a PM be learning and upskilling on right now?
Among the 12 postings, four named SQL, four named experiment design or A/B testing, and several asked for hands-on AI work. Razorpay's Senior PM posting wants a PM who has built something with LLMs and calls prompt engineering "table stakes", while Zeta expects PMs to use AI tools across research, specs, prototyping and analysis.
On whether an AI product manager must code, the postings suggest not necessarily. Paytm's AI Payments posting (Noida, listed 21 October 2026) expects an AI-first mindset but states that building models is not part of the role. Zeta's mandatory software development requirement shows the opposite end, so the answer depends on the product.
Where AI helps with analysis is still limited in the evidence. Atlassian's survey found AI saving product teams about two hours a day, mainly on routine tasks and documentation, but not yet helping with prioritisation, planning and advanced analytics. The sample is not India-specific.
Naukri's JobSpeak for September 2026 showed AI and ML roles up 20% year on year, and its CEO described demand moving towards specialised skills, particularly AI, and more experienced professionals. Engineers weighing the switch will find the data side covered in how to move from software engineer to product manager in India.
Where does a product management programme fit?
For candidates who want a taught route, the Certificate Programme in Product Management in the Agentic AI Era is one route. It is a live online programme from IIM Tiruchirappalli (IIM Trichy), run with Masai as the implementation partner, covering product foundations, platform strategy, AI for product managers, agentic AI and a team capstone to design and pitch an agentic-AI-powered product. The program is open to graduates and above.
A candidate still needs work samples, such as a query or an experiment write-up, to show employers the skill in use.
Frequently asked questions
Do product managers need SQL?
Often, but not always. Four of the 12 live postings reviewed on 30 October 2026 named SQL explicitly, among them Paytm's UPI posting and Razorpay's Senior Product Manager role. Meesho's Product Manager I and II did not name it. The bar rises with seniority.
Does an AI product manager need to code?
It depends on the role. Paytm's AI Payments posting expects an AI-first mindset but states that building models is not part of the role. Razorpay's Senior PM posting wants hands-on LLM experience, and Zeta's PM II makes software development mandatory. Meesho's postings ask only for technology understanding.
Which analytics tools should a product manager know?
Paytm's postings name Amplitude, Mixpanel, CleverTap and Metabase, the last two with an "or equivalent" qualifier. Other employers in the sample named no tool, so understanding event data and funnels matters more than loyalty to one product.
How many teams run experiments regularly?
In Atlassian's 2025 survey of product professionals in the US, France and Germany, 60% of teams made experimentation a regular part of their process. The sample is outside India and the survey is a vendor's own, so it is a reference point only.
What does a data-native product manager mean?
Razorpay's Senior Product Manager posting uses the phrase for a PM who writes SQL and builds dashboards, with at least 2 years on growth or PLG initiatives. It describes working directly with data and not relying on an analyst for every question.
