What product manager job descriptions in India ask for in 2026

What PM job descriptions in India ask for: in 12 live postings checked on 30 October 2026, none was entry level and all 12 named roadmap ownership.

What PM postings ask for

Across a sample of 12 live product manager postings at five Indian product companies, checked on 30 October 2026, none was an entry-level role. The lowest bar was Meesho's PM I at 3+ years overall with at least 1 year in product management. Roadmap ownership appeared in all 12, four named SQL explicitly, and at least five made AI a required or preferred skill.

What can a sample of 12 PM postings say about Indian hiring?

The sample covers Meesho (four postings), Paytm (four), Razorpay (two), Zeta (one) and InMobi (one), all taken from the employers' own Lever and Greenhouse careers boards on a single day. It is small and not random, so it describes what these five companies wrote down and not what every Indian employer wants. A sentence such as "most PM jobs ask for X" cannot be built from it.

What it does give is the actual wording. A job description is the employer's own statement of what the role must do, and reading twelve of them side by side shows which lines repeat and which belong to one team's quirks.

Naukri's JobSpeak index for September 2026 shows white-collar hiring up 2% year on year (3,053 against 3,002 a year earlier) but covers all roles, with no product-manager line. Its industry annexure put the Internet and e-commerce index at 911 against 953, down 4%, and IT software and services down 4%. Those are the industries where many product roles sit, though the index counts neither job titles nor vacancies.

Info Edge's chief executive, Hitesh Oberoi, described the market in the Naukri JobSpeak release as steady but more selective, with demand moving towards specialised skills, particularly AI, and more experienced professionals. That sentence is opinion rather than data, and it matches what the postings show.

How many years of experience do PM job descriptions ask for?

Every posting in the sample asks for experience, and the numbers rise with seniority in broad steps. At Meesho the ladder runs from PM I at 3+ years to Group PM at 8+ years. The table sets out the experience each posting asks for, whether SQL is named, and what the text says about AI.

PostingExperience askedSQL namedAI in the text

The "No" entries mean the posting text does not name SQL, and "Not stated" means the posting text does not mention AI, so neither should be taken as a statement that the employer does not care. Listing dates run from 29 June 2026 for the Group PM role to 21 October 2026 for Paytm's AI Payments posting, and any of them may have closed since.

Meesho's PM I posting, listed on 16 September 2026, asks for overall experience of 3+ years with at least 1 year in product management at a tech-led company, consumer internet preferred. It is one of the lower bars in the sample and still not a fresher role.

APM-titled roles do exist. LinkedIn's public job-search page for Associate Product Manager in India listed postings on 30 October 2026 at companies including Navi, Juspay, Groww, MakeMyTrip, airtel and OLX India, shown as posted between 3 days and 4 weeks earlier. They are advertised in small numbers, and a separate post on whether associate product manager is an entry-level job takes up the question.

What duties appear in almost every PM job description?

Roadmap ownership is the one line that appears in all 12 postings. Around it sit the same few duties in slightly different words.

Meesho's PM II posting, listed on 18 August 2026, lists problem prioritisation, MVP testing, go-to-market planning with marketing stakeholders, product metrics and a roadmap with at least a 3-month forward view. Its PM I posting adds comfort with A/B experimentation, product requirement documents and backlogs, plus first-principles problem solving. Paytm's UPI posting asks for the ability to write crisp PRDs and align cross-functional stakeholders.

Razorpay's PM II posting for ads, first published on 1 September 2026, asks for strong product execution and prioritisation, ownership of business metrics and customer outcomes, an analytical and experimentation mindset, and the ability to work across technical and business stakeholders. The wording differs from Meesho's, yet the duties line up closely.

Senior titles add people responsibility. Meesho's Senior PM posting for its data and analytics platform includes managing a small team of product analysts and associate product managers, and its Group PM posting asks for experience managing a direct team of product managers. For more on how PM duties differ from neighbouring titles, a comparison of product owners and product managers covers the title question, and an existing Masai guide covers the core skills an aspiring PM needs.

Which skills are actually worth learning right now?

The postings point to two skill sets that go beyond the duties above: data fluency and AI fluency.

On data, four of the 12 name SQL explicitly. Paytm's Pi Agents posting wants fluency in analytics suites such as Amplitude, Mixpanel and CleverTap, along with SQL and experiment design. Paytm's UPI posting asks for SQL and product analytics tools including Mixpanel, Amplitude and Metabase or equivalent. Razorpay's senior posting describes a data-native PM who writes SQL and builds dashboards, and Zeta asks for strong SQL, statistics and experiment design.

On AI, the asks run from a mindset to hands-on building. Paytm's AI Payments posting expects an AI-first mindset and says building models is not part of the role. Razorpay wants a PM who has actually built something with LLMs and calls prompt engineering table stakes. Zeta expects PMs to use AI tools across research, specs, prototyping and analysis. InMobi lists building AI-driven products for demand optimisation, pricing, forecasting and anomaly detection among responsibilities. A post on agentic AI skills for product managers goes deeper into what these postings name.

Zeta's posting adds a technical outlier: at least 3 years of hands-on software development, which it calls mandatory. It is one employer's bar for one role and should not be read as a rule for all PM jobs.

LinkedIn's Skills on the Rise 2026 list for India, published on 24 February 2026, is a useful check on this. Its "AI & Automation" group includes Prompt Engineering, Workflow Automation, LLMOps, AutoML and API, and its "Data & Analytics" group includes Querying, Database Optimisation, Data Analysis, Data Storytelling and Data Ethics.

Under "Business & Growth" the list adds GTM and Growth Strategy and Visual Storytelling and Communication, and under "People & Leadership" Collaboration, Stakeholder Management and Team Management. The growth is measured between 1 December 2024 and 30 November 2025 across all roles, so the list supports the direction of the postings without being PM-specific.

Do you need technical skills or a degree to be a product manager?

Technical skill is expected in a graded way. Meesho's PM I and PM II postings ask for technology understanding and state no degree or institute requirement. Zeta sits at the far end with its software development mandate. Paytm's AI Payments posting asks for a B.Tech or MBA background with solid technical understanding, and its Pi Agents posting says "Tier-1 institute preferred".

Razorpay takes the opposite line in its company description: "People > Pedigree", hiring for attitude, hustle and hunger more than degrees. That is a culture statement, not a rule that degrees do not matter, and the Paytm postings show that some employers still write institutes and degrees into the requirements.

On certifications, CXOtoday, reporting a Nasscom-Indeed report in May 2026, said 40% of employers prefer demonstrable AI skills or certifications over degrees and 32% give equal weight to skills, certifications and degrees. The survey covers AI-related hiring across industries and not PM roles, so it indicates a direction, not a PM hiring rule.

The qualification question has no single answer in these postings. Employers asking for years of product experience care most about that. Readers comparing paths can see the detail in a post that checks PM qualifications against postings, and the existing guide on how to become a product manager in India covers routes for non-tech backgrounds.

Is demand for senior product roles holding up better than mid-level ones?

Hiring data for all roles points to a squeeze in the middle. Naukri's JobSpeak for September 2026 showed hiring growth by experience band of 1% for 0-3 years, down 2% for 4-7 years, up 5% for 8-12 years, up 7% for 13-15 years and up 5% for 16+ years. These are all-role figures and not PM-specific, but they fit the postings: the senior titles in the sample ask for 6 to 10 years and manage teams.

The same logic explains why the sample has no entry-level role. When Info Edge's chief executive says the market is steady but more selective, with demand moving towards specialised skills and experienced professionals, a PM posting that asks for 3 years at minimum is consistent with it.

A hypothetical candidate with five years in engineering or analytics and some product-adjacent work would meet the stated years on several of these postings, since Paytm's UPI role asks for 3-5 years and Razorpay's PM II role for 4-7. A fresher would meet none of them. That is what this small sample shows, and it can change as the postings do.

Where a product management programme fits

Experience is the filter in most of these postings, so a programme cannot replace it. Product Management with AI is an online certification from BITS School of Management (BITSoM), offered in partnership with Masai, taught in live online classes with an optional campus workshop, covering product discovery, design and MVPs, building with agentic AI, Agile execution, go-to-market and product metrics.

Frequently asked questions

What do product manager job descriptions in India ask for?

In a sample of 12 live postings checked on 30 October 2026, all 12 named roadmap ownership, four named SQL and at least five made AI a required or preferred skill. Typical duties include prioritisation, product requirement documents, backlogs, metrics and stakeholder alignment. Experience asked ran from 3+ years upwards.

What qualifications are required for a product manager in India?

Employers differ. Meesho's PM I and PM II postings state no degree requirement, Paytm's AI Payments posting asks for a B.Tech or MBA background, and its Pi Agents posting prefers a Tier-1 institute. Razorpay says it hires for attitude more than degrees. Years of product experience carry more weight than any single qualification in this sample.

Do you need technical skills to be a product manager?

Technical understanding is common, coding is not universal. Meesho asks for technology understanding, Paytm's AI Payments role says building models is not part of the job, and Razorpay wants SQL plus something built with LLMs. Zeta alone makes at least 3 years of hands-on software development mandatory.

Is SQL required for product manager jobs in India?

Four of the 12 postings in the sample named SQL explicitly: Paytm's Pi Agents and UPI roles, Razorpay's senior role and Zeta's PM II role. The other eight did not name it. LinkedIn's 2026 India skills list also places querying and data analysis among fast-growing skills across all roles.

Is product manager an entry-level job?

Not in this sample. None of the 12 postings was entry level, and the lowest bar was 3+ years overall with at least 1 in product management at Meesho. APM-titled roles are advertised at some Indian product companies, but in small numbers on LinkedIn's public listing page on 30 October 2026.
