Product manager career path in India, from APM to group PM
Product manager career path in India: Meesho postings run from 3+ years at PM I to 8+ at group PM; Naukri's September 2026 hiring rose 7% at 13-15 years.
The product manager career path in India runs from Product Manager I through PM II and senior roles to group product manager. Meesho's postings set PM I at 3+ years of experience and its Group Product Manager role at 8+ years overall, with 6+ in product management and a team of PMs to manage. Naukri's September 2026 JobSpeak showed hiring up 7% at 13-15 years of experience.
How do Indian postings define the product manager ladder?
Indian employers write their own ladders. The most useful evidence is what live postings ask for at each rung. On 30 October 2026, 12 live product-manager postings at five Indian product companies (Meesho, Paytm, Razorpay, Zeta and InMobi) could be read side by side. None was entry level, and roadmap ownership appeared in all 12.
The table lays out the postings in order of the experience asked, with the people-management expectation and one scope detail from each. It is a small sample from one day, so it shows how a handful of employers define levels and does not set an industry standard.
| Role and company | Experience asked | Management scope | Scope detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Product Manager I, Meesho | 3+ years overall, 1+ in product | None stated | First-principles problem solving, A/B experimentation, PRDs |
| Product Manager II, Meesho | 4+ years overall, 4+ in product | None stated | Prioritisation, MVP testing, go-to-market with marketing |
| Product Manager II - Ads, Razorpay | 4-7 years in product | None stated | Ownership of business metrics and customer outcomes |
| Product Manager II, Zeta | 6+ years total, 3-4 in product | None stated | SQL, statistics, experiment design, 3+ years of software development |
| Senior Product Manager, Meesho | 7+ years overall, 4+ in product | Product analysts and APMs | Data and analytics platform |
| Senior Product Manager, Razorpay | 6+ years in product | None stated | Growth or PLG work, SQL, hands-on LLM use |
| Product Management - Pi Agents, Paytm | 5-9 years in product | None stated | Agentic AI products, evals, agent orchestration |
| Product Manager - Programmatic, InMobi | 8-10 years in product | None stated | Ad tech depth, AI-driven pricing and forecasting |
| Group Product Manager, Meesho | 8+ years overall, 6+ in product | Direct team of PMs | Leads a PM team |
The pattern is that years of product experience rise in steps, and the first explicit people-management line appears at the senior rung. Titles also overlap, since Zeta's PM II asks for 6+ years of total experience while Meesho's PM II asks for 4+.
Is an associate product manager an entry-level job, and what do PM II and senior roles ask for?
The title suggests so, but the evidence is mixed. APM-titled roles are advertised at some Indian product companies. LinkedIn's public listing page for Associate Product Manager roles in India on 30 October 2026 showed Navi, Juspay, Groww, MakeMyTrip, airtel, Keka HR, Shaadi.com, OLX India and BimaKavach, posted between 3 days and 4 weeks earlier. The page changes daily and shows only the first results, so it shows that such roles exist and not how many.
Pay data complicates the picture. AmbitionBox showed a typical Associate Product Manager range of Rs 14.6 lakh to Rs 16.1 lakh a year on 29 October 2026, from 15.8k salaries, for people with 1 to 10 years of experience. A band that wide means the title is used for people well beyond their first job.
The lowest bar in the 12-posting read was Meesho's Product Manager I at 3+ years overall with at least 1 in product management in a tech-led company. A reader coming from a different function therefore has to build product exposure first, which the route from designer to product manager in India covers.
Beyond the entry rung, mid-level postings add ownership. Meesho's PM II (listed 18 August 2026) lists problem prioritisation, MVP testing, go-to-market planning with marketing stakeholders, product metrics and a roadmap with at least a 3-month forward view. Razorpay's PM II - Ads (first published 1 September 2026) wants ownership of business metrics and customer outcomes, plus an analytical and experimentation mindset.
Senior postings add data and AI depth. Razorpay's Senior Product Manager role (first published 6 October 2026) asks for 6+ years with at least 2 years on growth or PLG initiatives, describes a "data-native PM" who writes SQL and builds dashboards, and calls prompt engineering "table stakes". Zeta's PM II expects PMs to use AI tools across research, specs, prototyping and analysis.
On pay, AmbitionBox showed a typical Senior Product Manager range of Rs 36.1 lakh to Rs 39.9 lakh a year on 29 October 2026, for 5 to 15 years of experience, from 22.8k salaries. It is self-reported market data for the title, not a target for anyone changing careers. The full pay picture is in the existing guide to product manager salary in India in 2026.
What about group product manager, director and CPO?
The highest rung among the 12 postings is group product manager. Meesho's Group Product Manager posting (listed 29 June 2026) asks for 8+ years overall, 6+ years in product management and experience managing a direct team of product managers. At Meesho the ladder runs from PM I at 3+ years to Group PM at 8+.
None of the 12 postings was for a director or chief product officer role.
In the 12 postings sampled, the first people-management line appears at the senior rung. The Meesho senior role manages analysts and APMs, and the group role manages PMs, so the move from individual contributor to manager is a distinct step with its own interview.
Which experience bands are hiring in 2026?
Naukri's JobSpeak for September 2026 reported hiring growth by experience band for all roles in India. Hiring for 0-3 years was up 1% year on year, 4-7 years was down 2%, 8-12 years was up 5%, 13-15 years was up 7% and 16+ years was up 5%.
Read against the ladder, the 4-7 year band, where several PM II postings sit (Razorpay at 4-7 years, Paytm UPI at 3-5 years), was the only band that shrank. Info Edge's CEO described the market in the Naukri JobSpeak release as steady but more selective, favouring AI skills and more experienced hires. That is a market-wide opinion, not a product-specific one.
AmbitionBox's Product Manager ranges rise by band on 29 October 2026: Rs 15.5 lakh to Rs 17.1 lakh at 1-3 years, Rs 19.6 lakh to Rs 21.6 lakh at 3-6 years, Rs 22.7 lakh to Rs 25.1 lakh at 6-9 years, Rs 25 lakh to Rs 27.6 lakh at 9-12 years and Rs 27.2 lakh to Rs 30.1 lakh at 12+ years. These are self-reported ranges, so seniority and company type both feed into them.
Where are product managers moving: the AI manager fork?
One new branch has appeared at the senior end. LinkedIn's Jobs on the Rise 2026 list for India, based on jobs started between January 2023 and July 2025, includes "AI managers", who oversee AI projects. Their most common skills are Large Language Models, Retrieval-Augmented Generation and MLOps, their median prior experience is 6 years, and the top roles they transitioned from are Data Scientist, Product Manager and Software Engineer.
Product manager itself is not on LinkedIn's list of 25 fastest-growing jobs, so the finding is about where PMs go, not about the title growing. Live postings match the direction. Paytm's Pi Agents posting (listed 27 August 2026) is aimed at 5-9 years of experience and prefers hands-on agentic product experience, including prompt design, evals and agent orchestration.
For the practical content of that work, agentic AI for product managers goes through prompts, evals and agents.
At what stage in a PM career does an MBA actually help?
The postings give mixed signals. Paytm's AI Payments posting (3 to 6 years) asks for a B.Tech or MBA background. Its Pi Agents posting says "Tier-1 institute preferred". Meesho's PM I and II name no degree, and Razorpay's company description says it hires "for attitude, hustle, and hunger more than degrees".
Employer surveys lean towards skills. CXOtoday, reporting the Nasscom-Indeed report in May 2026, said 40% of employers prefer demonstrable AI skills or certifications over degrees, and 32% give equal weight to skills, certifications and degrees. That covers AI-related hiring broadly, not PM roles.
One employer's preference is not a rule.
Where does a product management programme fit?
Candidates who want structured training can look at the Certificate Programme in Product Management in the Agentic AI Era. It is a live online programme from IIM Tiruchirappalli (IIM Trichy), run with Masai as the implementation partner, covering product foundations, platform strategy, AI for product managers, agentic AI and a team capstone to design and pitch an agentic-AI-powered product. The program is open to graduates and above.
A certificate does not substitute for the years of product experience the postings ask for.

How many years does it take to become a senior product manager in India?
Postings vary. Meesho's Senior Product Manager role for its data and analytics platform asks for 7+ years overall with 4+ in product management, while Razorpay's Senior Product Manager asks for 6+ years in product management. Employers define the rung differently.

Not necessarily. The two titles are used differently by different employers. Meesho's Product Manager I asks for 3+ years overall, while AmbitionBox's Associate Product Manager range covers people with 1 to 10 years of experience. In Naukri's September 2026 JobSpeak, hiring grew most at 13-15 years of experience (up 7%), with 8-12 and 16+ years each up 5%. The 4-7 year band fell 2%. The index covers all roles, not product management alone.
