Is product management a good career in India in 2026?
Is product management a good career in India in 2026? Naukri's September 2026 JobSpeak had AI/ML roles up 20%; 12 live PM postings had none at entry level.
Product management is a good career in India in 2026 for people who can reach a mid-level bar, but a hard first job straight after graduation. In a read of 12 live product-manager postings at five Indian product companies on 30 October 2026, none was entry level. The lowest bar was 3+ years of experience overall, with at least 1 year in product management.
What is the job demand for product managers in India?
The signals below each measure a different slice of the market: tech openings worldwide, all-role hiring in India, and a sample of live postings. They point the same way.
The widest signal is global. Lenny's Newsletter, analysing TrueUp job-opening data in March 2026, counted over 7,300 open PM roles at tech companies worldwide, 75% above the early-2023 low and up nearly 20% since the start of 2026. That was the most open PM roles seen since 2022. The count covers tech companies and top startups only, counts openings rather than hires, and says nothing specific about India.
Two other points from the same analysis matter for Indian readers. Tech companies had 1.27 times as many open PM roles as design roles in March 2026. And Lenny's Newsletter named Bengaluru as one of the top international hubs for tech jobs outside the US, a ranking across all tech roles rather than PM roles alone.
For India itself, the nearest regular reading is Naukri's JobSpeak. For September 2026 it showed white-collar hiring up 2% year on year (index 3,053 against 3,002), AI and ML roles up 20% and global capability centre (GCC) hiring up 4%. JobSpeak covers all roles, so these describe the market the PM role sits in, not a count of PM jobs.
Product managers cluster where software is the business. Naukri's September 2026 annexure put its Internet and Ecommerce index at 911, down 4% from 953 a year earlier, and IT-Software and Software Services at 3,432, also down 4% from 3,585. Those are two of the sectors where most product roles sit, and both were softer than the all-industry reading.
Underneath that, the end markets keep growing. IBEF projects India's e-commerce industry growing from US$ 125 billion in 2024 to US$ 345 billion by 2030, a compound annual growth rate of 18.4%. Redseer's September 2026 report expects India's online retail market to pass USD 90 billion in 2026, with quick commerce at about USD 9 billion in the first half. IBEF also reports that UPI processed 22.35 billion transactions in April 2026, one reason payments and fintech teams employ so many product managers. A closer sector-by-sector view is in which industries hire product managers in India.
GCCs are a second source of demand. The Zinnov-Nasscom 2026 report on GCCs in India counted 2,117 global capability centres across 3,728 units, with about 39% classed as "Portfolio Hub", meaning they own product, platform and IP end to end from India. Zinnov's classification is not a count of PM jobs, but ownership of products is what creates them.
Startups are the third. Inc42, reporting a ministry statement on 18 April 2026, said India recognised more than 55,200 startups in FY26, up 51.6% from over 36,400 in FY25, and that direct jobs created passed 23.36 lakh in total, with over 4.99 lakh added in FY26. That is a ministry tally of all startup jobs, not product roles.
Which experience bands and cities are hiring, and what do postings ask for?
The experience pattern is the most useful finding for a career decision. Naukri's September 2026 JobSpeak showed hiring growth by experience band that was weakest in the middle and strongest at the senior end.
The table below lists the demand indicators in one place, with what each one does and does not measure.
| Indicator | Latest value | Source and date | Does not measure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open PM roles, tech companies | Over 7,300 globally | Lenny's Newsletter, TrueUp data, March 2026 | India, or non-tech employers |
| Hiring growth, 0-3 years | +1% year on year | Naukri JobSpeak, September 2026 | PM roles specifically |
| Hiring growth, 4-7 years | -2% year on year | Naukri JobSpeak, September 2026 | PM roles specifically |
| Hiring growth, 8-12 years | +5% year on year | Naukri JobSpeak, September 2026 | PM roles specifically |
| Hiring growth, 13-15 years | +7% year on year | Naukri JobSpeak, September 2026 | PM roles specifically |
| GCCs in India | 2,117 across 3,728 units | Zinnov-Nasscom, data as of March 2026 | PM jobs inside them |
| Live PM postings sampled | 12, none entry level | Five company careers boards, 30 October 2026 | A random sample |
Info Edge's CEO, Hitesh Oberoi, described the September market in Naukri's JobSpeak as steady but more selective, with demand moving towards specialised skills, particularly AI, and more experienced professionals. For a product manager that reads as good news at the senior end and a harder climb for someone with four to seven years behind them and no product title.
Cities are harder to pin down. Lenny's Newsletter ranks Bengaluru among the top tech hubs outside the US. The postings reviewed on 30 October 2026 were based in Bengaluru (also written Bangalore) and Noida, with Paytm's UPI role open in both Noida and Bangalore.
Among the 12 live postings at Meesho, Paytm, Razorpay, Zeta and InMobi, roadmap ownership appeared in all 12, four named SQL explicitly and at least five made AI a required or preferred skill. It is a small, non-random sample of one day's postings, so it describes what a handful of well-known employers wrote rather than what all PM jobs require.
The experience ladder inside it is concrete. Meesho's Product Manager I posting in Bengaluru (listed 16 September 2026) asks for 3+ years of overall experience with at least 1 in product management. Its Product Manager II posting (listed 18 August 2026) asks for 4+ years in product management. Its Group Product Manager posting (listed 29 June 2026) asks for 8+ years overall and 6+ years in product management, plus experience managing a team of product managers. The full ladder is mapped in the product manager career path in India.
Technical bars vary by role. Zeta's Product Manager II posting (listed 1 October 2026) makes at least 3 years of hands-on software development mandatory. Paytm's AI Payments posting (listed 21 October 2026) asks for a B.Tech or MBA background with solid technical understanding, but states that building models is not part of the role. Meesho's postings name no degree. Razorpay's company description says it hires "for attitude, hustle, and hunger more than degrees", while Paytm's Pi Agents posting prefers a Tier-1 institute. Employers are not consistent on degrees.
For a wider read of the wording, what product manager job descriptions in India ask for goes through the requirements line by line.
Did AI shrink the product manager role or change it?
The evidence so far says it changed the role. In the TrueUp analysis cited above, open PM roles were at a three-year high in March 2026, and Lenny's Newsletter said demand for AI engineers and AI PMs was "similarly exploding". It defines AI roles as all open roles at AI-driven companies plus AI-specific roles at non-AI companies, so the label is broad.
India's postings show the change in text. Paytm's Pi Agents posting in Noida (listed 27 August 2026, team Inference and Agentic AI) prefers hands-on experience building AI-native or agentic products, including prompt design, evals and agent orchestration. Razorpay's Senior Product Manager posting (first published 6 October 2026) wants a PM who has built something with LLMs and calls prompt engineering "table stakes". A fuller treatment is in agentic AI for product managers.
LinkedIn's Jobs on the Rise 2026 list for India includes "AI managers", and product managers are among the top roles people moved from into it, alongside data scientists and software engineers. Product manager itself is not on that list of 25 fastest-growing jobs, so the title is not growing on LinkedIn's measure.
Adoption data from other markets adds context. Atlassian's 2025 survey of product teams in the US, France and Germany found AI saving about two hours a day, mostly on routine work, while not yet helping with prioritisation and planning. It is not an India sample.
How much does a senior product manager make in India?
Pay varies with the publisher's method, so each figure is given with its source. AmbitionBox, on 29 October 2026, showed a typical Senior Product Manager range of Rs 36.1 lakh to Rs 39.9 lakh a year for 5 to 15 years of experience, based on 22.8k reported salaries. For the Product Manager title overall it showed Rs 22.2 lakh to Rs 24.6 lakh, from 73.1k salaries.
Other publishers differ. Indeed India's average for Product Manager was Rs 13,24,013 a year in October 2026, based on 143 salaries from job postings, a different method and a much smaller sample. The gap of roughly Rs 9 lakh between the two is a method effect, not a disagreement about the job.
By experience, AmbitionBox's self-reported Product Manager ranges rose from Rs 15.5 lakh to Rs 17.1 lakh at 1 to 3 years, to Rs 27.2 lakh to Rs 30.1 lakh at 12+ years. These are market data from self-reports and say nothing about what any course leads to. A longer breakdown is in the existing guide to product manager salary in India in 2026.
If you had to restart your software career in 2026, what would you learn first?
For someone choosing between a software and a product path, the postings name these skills: SQL (four of the 12), analytics tools such as Amplitude, Mixpanel or CleverTap, comfort with A/B experimentation, and written PRDs, backlogs and roadmaps.
LinkedIn's Skills on the Rise 2026 for India supports that direction. Its list of fastest-growing skills includes querying, data analysis and workflow automation, and stakeholder management and GTM and growth strategy. The list is cross-role, not PM-only. The two skill clusters that product postings lean on hardest are covered in product metrics and experimentation skills.
Going back from product to software is a separate question. Postings such as Zeta's keep hands-on development as a mandatory requirement for some PM roles, so engineering experience stays an asset in either direction.
Who is product management a good career for, and who should wait?
The case for choosing it is strongest for people with some years of work in software, analytics, design or operations, who can point to shipped work. The Naukri bands and the 12-posting read both favour experience, and both suggest that a first job straight from college is the exception.
The case against is just as concrete. APM-titled roles are advertised at some Indian product companies, among them Navi, Juspay, Groww and MakeMyTrip on LinkedIn on 30 October 2026, but they appear in small numbers. AmbitionBox's Associate Product Manager range is Rs 14.6 lakh to Rs 16.1 lakh a year across 1 to 10 years of experience, so it is not an entry-level figure either. PayScale's average base for the title is about Rs 10 lakh, from 182 profiles in September 2026.
The lowest bar in the 12 postings was 3+ years of experience overall, with at least 1 year in product management. A reader who meets it will find the demand picture reasonably supportive, if selective.
Where does a product management programme fit?
Candidates who want structured training in the area can look at the Certificate Programme in Product Management in the Agentic AI Era. It is a live online programme from IIM Tiruchirappalli (IIM Trichy), run with Masai as the implementation partner, covering product foundations, platform strategy, AI for product managers, agentic AI and a team capstone to design and pitch an agentic-AI-powered product. The program is open to graduates and above.
A certificate does not replace shipped work or the experience bands employers ask for, so it fits best as one input alongside projects and a current role.
Frequently asked questions
Is product management a good career option for freshers in India?
It is harder for freshers than for experienced candidates. In a read of 12 live PM postings on 30 October 2026, none was entry level, and the lowest bar was 3+ years of experience. APM-titled roles exist at some companies but are advertised in small numbers.
Do product managers have a future?
Demand data says yes for now. Lenny's Newsletter, using TrueUp data, found open PM roles at tech companies worldwide at their highest in over three years in March 2026. Indian postings in October 2026 ask product managers for AI skills rather than dropping the role.
Is an MBA or engineering degree required?
It depends on the employer. Paytm's AI Payments posting asks for a B.Tech or MBA background, while Meesho's Product Manager I and II postings name no degree. Razorpay says it hires for attitude more than degrees. The posting text is the only reliable guide.
Do product managers need to code?
Not always. Zeta's Product Manager II posting makes at least 3 years of hands-on software development mandatory, while Paytm's AI Payments posting says building models is not part of the role. Meesho's postings ask only for good technology understanding, and Razorpay's senior posting asks for SQL and something built with LLMs.
Which skills are most often listed?
In the 12 postings sampled, roadmap ownership appeared in all of them, four named SQL and at least five treated AI as required or preferred. Analytics tools named included Amplitude, Mixpanel, CleverTap and Metabase. Meesho's PM I posting also lists comfort with A/B experimentation, product requirement documents and backlogs.
