Which industries hire product managers in India, fintech to GCCs
Which industries hire product managers in India? IBEF puts UPI at 22.35 billion transactions in April 2026, and Zinnov-Nasscom counts 2,117 GCCs.
Fintech and payments, e-commerce, software product companies and global capability centres (GCCs) are the sectors where live Indian PM postings and published scale figures cluster. IBEF reports that UPI processed 22.35 billion transactions in April 2026, and the Zinnov-Nasscom 2026 report counts 2,117 GCCs in India, about 39% of which own product, platform and IP end to end. Each of those figures measures a sector's activity, not PM jobs.
Why does industry matter more than title in Indian PM hiring?
A product manager title says little on its own. Postings at Indian product companies attach the title to a domain, and the domain often decides who gets shortlisted. Paytm's UPI Product posting (Noida and Bangalore, listed 14 September 2026) asks for 3-5 years of product management experience with a mandatory focus on consumer-facing products or fintech. InMobi's Programmatic Monetization posting (Bangalore, first published 7 October 2026) asks for 8-10 years of product management experience with significant ad tech or programmatic experience.
Domain requirements like these are why a sector view is more useful than a count of vacancies. It is also why the answer to "who is hiring" depends on what the candidate already knows. For the career ladder itself, the product manager career path in India sets out what each level asks for.
Scale signals here come from industry publishers, and each one measures its own sector, not product jobs. The posting examples are one day's read of live careers boards on 30 October 2026, so they illustrate requirements and do not size demand.
Fintech and payments: what the postings ask for
Payments is where India's product teams have the clearest volume signal. IBEF reports that in April 2026 UPI processed 22.35 billion transactions worth Rs 29.03 lakh crore, with 713 banks live on the platform. That is a single-month figure, but it explains why payments and fintech product teams are large employers of PMs.
The postings show what those teams ask for. Paytm's UPI Product role wants comfort with SQL and product analytics tools such as Mixpanel, Amplitude or Metabase, plus crisp PRDs and cross-functional alignment. Paytm's AI Payments posting (Noida, listed 21 October 2026, products for the UAE market) asks for 3 to 6 years of hands-on product management experience and a B.Tech or MBA background, and expects an AI-first mindset without requiring PMs to build models.
Razorpay's Product Manager II posting for its Ads product (Bengaluru, first published 1 September 2026) asks for 4-7 years, ownership of business metrics and an experimentation mindset. Its Senior Product Manager posting (first published 6 October 2026) asks for 6+ years with at least 2 years on growth or PLG initiatives.
APM-titled roles appear in this sector. LinkedIn's public listing page for Associate Product Manager roles in India on 30 October 2026 included Navi, Juspay and Groww, shown as posted between 3 days and 4 weeks earlier. The page changes daily and shows only the first results, so it proves existence rather than volume.
Zeta's Product Manager II posting (Bangalore, listed 1 October 2026) covers a US consumer banking product and asks for 6+ years of total experience including 3-4 years in product management. It also makes at least 3 years of hands-on software development mandatory, which makes it a technical bar set by one employer, not a sector rule.
E-commerce, quick commerce and marketplaces
IBEF projects India's e-commerce industry growing from US$ 125 billion in 2024 to US$ 345 billion by 2030, a compound annual growth rate of 18.4%. Redseer's report of 17 September 2026 said online retail grew about 25% year on year in the first half of 2026 and is projected to cross USD 90 billion in 2026. Quick commerce was about USD 9 billion in that half, with about 60 million monthly transacting users.
The hiring index tells a more cautious story. Naukri's September 2026 JobSpeak annexure put its Internet and Ecommerce index at 911, against 953 a year earlier, a fall of 4%. A growing market and a softer hiring index can both be true, because growth in sales does not translate one for one into headcount.
Meesho's postings, all Bengaluru-based, show the shape of a marketplace PM ladder. Product Manager I (listed 16 September 2026) asks for 3+ years of experience with at least 1 in product management in a tech-led company, consumer internet preferred. Product Manager II (listed 18 August 2026) asks for 4+ years in product management and expects go-to-market planning with marketing stakeholders. The Senior Product Manager role for its data and analytics platform (listed 23 September 2026) asks for 7+ years overall with 4+ in product management and includes managing product analysts and associate product managers.
Consumer travel and classifieds also advertised APM-titled roles on LinkedIn that day, among them MakeMyTrip and OLX India.
Global capability centres building products from India
GCCs are the hardest group to see in posting data. The Zinnov-Nasscom 2026 report on GCCs in India reports 2,117 GCCs across 3,728 units, US$98.4 billion in market revenue, a 2.36 million workforce and a "#1 AI hiring market globally" label, with data as of March 2026. Zinnov classes about 39% of GCCs as "Portfolio Hub", meaning end-to-end ownership from India of product, platform and IP.
That 39% is Zinnov's own maturity classification and not a count of PM jobs. Zinnov also sells GCC set-up services. Still, a centre that owns a product from India needs product managers in India, which is the mechanism that matters.
On the hiring side, Naukri's September 2026 JobSpeak showed GCC hiring up 4% year on year. None of the 12 postings reviewed on 30 October 2026 came from a GCC.
SaaS and ad tech, banking and IT services: how does PM pay differ?
Software product firms report the highest PM pay on AmbitionBox, though the sample is partly a seniority effect. The posting examples show why domain depth matters here. InMobi's role lists building AI-driven products for demand optimisation, pricing, forecasting and anomaly detection. Paytm's Ads Product posting asks for 3-8 years with 2+ years in ad tech.
Software firms also appear on the LinkedIn APM page, including Keka HR and BimaKavach. Naukri's September 2026 industry annexure put IT-Software and Software Services at 3,432 against 3,585 a year earlier, down 4%, so hiring in the broader category is soft even while individual product roles stay open.
Ad tech roles are a good example of the domain bar. A reader without programmatic experience is unlikely to clear an 8-10 year ad tech requirement, but could be a fit for the Meesho or Razorpay roles that ask for general product skills. Platform thinking is a shared requirement across these firms, covered in platform strategy for product managers.
The table pairs each sector's scale signal with a live posting and the matching AmbitionBox industry range, which covers all experience levels and partly reflects seniority mix. Self-reported pay is market data about the role, not a forecast for any candidate.
| Sector | Scale signal | Live posting and domain ask | AmbitionBox PM range (29 October 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Payments and fintech | UPI 22.35 billion transactions, April 2026 (IBEF) | Paytm UPI: 3-5 years, consumer or fintech mandatory | Not stated |
| Internet and e-commerce | Online retail above USD 90 billion in 2026 (Redseer) | Meesho PM I: 3+ years, consumer internet preferred | Rs 24 lakh to Rs 26.6 lakh (6.8k salaries) |
| Software product | Not stated | InMobi: 8-10 years, ad tech depth | Rs 27 lakh to Rs 29.8 lakh (6.9k salaries) |
| IT services and consulting | IT-Software index 3,432, September 2026 (Naukri) | Not stated | Rs 23.6 lakh to Rs 26 lakh (10.6k salaries) |
| Banking | Not stated | Zeta PM II: US consumer banking product, 6+ years | Rs 17 lakh to Rs 18.8 lakh (6.5k salaries) |
| GCCs | 2,117 centres, March 2026 (Zinnov-Nasscom) | Not stated | Not stated |
Banking sits lowest at Rs 17 lakh to Rs 18.8 lakh, and software product highest. IT services and consulting, at Rs 23.6 lakh to Rs 26 lakh, sit close to Internet. By city, AmbitionBox shows Bengaluru at Rs 23.7 lakh to Rs 26.2 lakh and Mumbai at Rs 21 lakh to Rs 23.2 lakh. More on pay is in the existing guide to product manager salary in India in 2026.
Working as a business analyst in a fintech startup, how do you move into a PM role?
A business analyst in a fintech startup already holds the domain knowledge that Paytm's UPI posting makes mandatory. The gaps the postings list are product-specific: SQL fluency, experience with analytics tools, writing PRDs, experiment design and owning a roadmap, which appeared in all 12 postings reviewed on 30 October 2026.
For a role at another company, the lowest bar reviewed on 30 October 2026 was 3+ years of experience overall with 1+ in product management. A written case from the analyst's own work, such as a funnel analysis that led to a change.
Designers and marketers face a similar question from a different starting point, covered in from designer to product manager in India. And for those aiming at AI-first product teams, such as Paytm's Pi Agents unit, agentic AI for product managers describes what such postings expect.
One reading of the postings is that the sector to pick is the one where the candidate's existing knowledge overlaps most with the named requirement. Meesho's PM I posting prefers consumer internet experience rather than requiring a named domain.
Where does a product management programme fit?
For candidates who want structured training before targeting a sector, the Certificate Programme in Product Management in the Agentic AI Era is one route. It is a live online programme from IIM Tiruchirappalli (IIM Trichy), run with Masai as the implementation partner, covering product foundations, platform strategy, AI for product managers, agentic AI and a team capstone to design and pitch an agentic-AI-powered product. The program is open to graduates and above.
Domain knowledge still comes from the work a candidate has done or does next, so the programme is a complement to that experience.
Frequently asked questions
Which industry hires the most product managers in India?
Payments, e-commerce, software product companies and GCCs are the sectors with the clearest signals. IBEF reported UPI at 22.35 billion transactions in April 2026, and Zinnov-Nasscom counts 2,117 GCCs. These measure each sector's scale, not PM jobs, so they do not rank industries by PM hiring.
Is fintech experience mandatory for product manager jobs?
Only for some roles. Paytm's UPI Product posting makes consumer-facing or fintech focus mandatory. Meesho's Product Manager I posting prefers consumer internet experience, and InMobi's asks for ad tech depth. Postings from Razorpay and Meesho also stress general product skills.
Do GCCs hire product managers?
GCCs that own products from India need them. Zinnov-Nasscom classes about 39% of India's 2,117 GCCs as Portfolio Hubs that own product, platform and IP end to end. The postings reviewed on 30 October 2026 did not include a GCC role.
Which industry pays product managers the most?
On AmbitionBox on 29 October 2026, software product showed the highest reported range at Rs 27 lakh to Rs 29.8 lakh, and banking the lowest at Rs 17 lakh to Rs 18.8 lakh. These are self-reported ranges across all experience levels.
Are e-commerce product jobs growing?
The market is, but the hiring index is soft. Redseer expects online retail above USD 90 billion in 2026, while Naukri's Internet and Ecommerce index for September 2026 was 4% lower than a year earlier. Redseer also reported online retail growth of about 25% year on year in the first half of 2026.
