What an AI product manager does and who is hiring for it in India

What an AI product manager does in India: a Paytm posting from October 2026 wants an AI-first mindset, and Naukri had AI and ML roles up 20% in September.

The AI product manager

An AI product manager is a product manager whose product has AI in the feature, in the workflow, or in both, and in live Indian postings, that requirement sits inside ordinary PM postings. Paytm's Pi Agents posting, listed on 27 August 2026, asks for 5-9 years of product management experience and prefers hands-on work on agentic products, including prompt design, evals and agent orchestration.

What does an AI product manager do?

The duties in live postings look like a normal product manager's duties with an AI layer added. InMobi's Product Manager posting for programmatic monetisation, first published on 7 October 2026, lists building AI-driven products for demand optimisation, pricing, forecasting and anomaly detection among its responsibilities. The same posting asks for 8-10 years of product management experience and significant ad tech background, so the AI work sits on top of domain depth.

A second reading of the title is a product manager who uses AI tools in daily work. Zeta's Product Manager II posting, listed on 1 October 2026 for a US consumer banking product, expects PMs to use AI tools across research, specs, prototyping and analysis. That is a different job from shaping an agent product, yet both appear under the same label.

Both readings share the core of the role: deciding what gets built, for whom, and how success is measured. On an agent product, that also means thinking about how a model fails and how output quality is checked.

Is AI product management a real job or just a label?

The postings show that AI product management is an added layer on ordinary product management. None of the five postings in the table below invents a new discipline. Each one asks for years of ordinary product management experience first, and each describes AI as a requirement or a preference attached to that base.

A wider read points the same way. Across 12 live PM postings at five Indian product companies on 30 October 2026, none was an entry-level role, roadmap ownership appeared in all 12, and at least five made AI a required or preferred skill in the role text. Twelve postings from five employers describe a pattern in those postings and not the whole market.

AI PM is a real set of expectations, attached to a PM job that already existed. The postings describe a PM with shipped work who can also show AI fluency, not a newcomer who adds "AI" to a CV.

Who is hiring AI product managers in India right now?

The five postings in the table come from Paytm, Razorpay, Zeta and InMobi. IBEF reported that India's UPI processed 22.35 billion transactions in April 2026.

The table sets out five live postings that make AI part of the role. Each was live on the employer's careers board on 30 October 2026, and the last column records whether the text says anything about building models.

InMobi, Programmatic Monetization (Bangalore)7 October 20268-10 years in product managementAI-driven demand optimisation, pricing and forecastingNot stated

Every row asks for at least three years of product experience. None is an entry-level posting, which matters for anyone reading "AI product manager" as a way into the field. Postings change daily and can close, and five rows are an illustration, not a count of vacancies.

Paytm's AI Payments posting also asks for a B.Tech or MBA background with solid technical understanding. Razorpay's company description in its PM postings says it hires for attitude, hustle and hunger more than degrees. Employers differ on credentials as much as on AI.

Does an AI product manager need to code, and which skills do postings name?

It depends on the employer and the role. Zeta's PM II posting makes at least 3 years of hands-on software development mandatory, which is the strictest bar among the five. Paytm's AI Payments posting says the opposite about models: building them is not part of the role, although an AI-first mindset is expected.

Razorpay sits between the two. Its Senior PM posting describes a data-native PM who writes SQL and builds dashboards, and wants someone who has actually built something with LLMs, calling prompt engineering table stakes. That is hands-on work, but it is closer to prototyping with a language model than to training one.

Meesho's PM I and PM II postings, from September and August 2026, ask for good technology understanding and do not make software development a stated requirement. The practical reading is that coding is required where the product is technical, and technical fluency is required almost everywhere. A companion post on agentic AI for product managers goes through the prompt, eval and agent skills in more detail.

Three layers show up across the postings. The first is ordinary PM craft: roadmaps, prioritisation, stakeholder alignment and metrics. The second is data skill. Paytm's Pi Agents posting names analytics suites such as Amplitude, Mixpanel and CleverTap along with SQL and experiment design, and Razorpay's senior role asks for SQL and dashboards. The third is AI-specific: prompt design, evals, agent orchestration and direct experience of building with LLMs.

LinkedIn's Skills on the Rise 2026 list for India, published on 24 February 2026, points in the same direction. Its "AI & Automation" group includes Prompt Engineering, Workflow Automation, LLMOps, AutoML and API, and its "Data & Analytics" group includes Querying and Data Analysis. The list covers all roles and growth between 1 December 2024 and 30 November 2025, so it is not PM-specific.

Evals are the least familiar item for most PMs. In plain terms, an eval is a repeatable test of whether a model's output is good enough for the feature, written before launch and rerun after every change. Paytm's posting names the skill without defining it.

Atlassian's State of Product 2026 survey, published on 3 September 2025 and covering product teams in the US, France and Germany, found most teams use 1-3 AI tools daily and save about 2 hours a day, mainly on routine tasks and documentation, while AI is not yet helping much with prioritisation, planning or advanced analytics. It is a vendor survey outside India, so it is context only.

How does AI PM demand look worldwide and in India?

Globally, the direction is up. Lenny's Newsletter, analysing TrueUp data in March 2026, reported over 7,300 open PM roles at tech companies worldwide, 75% above the early-2023 low and up nearly 20% since the start of 2026. The same analysis described demand for AI engineers and AI PMs as similarly exploding, defining AI roles as all open roles at AI-driven companies plus AI-specific roles at non-AI companies. These are global openings at tech companies and top startups, not an India figure.

Naukri's JobSpeak, a monthly hiring index based on Naukri.com listings and recruiter searches, covers all roles and has no product-manager line. It did show AI and ML roles up 20% year on year in September 2026 and, in its July 2026 edition, up 33%. Month-to-month swings in that index are large, so one named month is safer than a trend.

The foundit Insights Tracker, as reported by PTI in January 2026, counted 2,90,256 AI-linked roles posted in 2025 and projected AI hiring to grow 32% in 2026 to nearly 3.8 lakh roles. "AI-linked" is foundit's own definition and the 2026 number is a projection. Neither figure isolates product managers, so both describe the context around the role and not the role itself.

What does LinkedIn's data show about moving from product manager to AI manager?

LinkedIn's Jobs on the Rise 2026 list for India, published on 8 January 2026, includes a title called AI manager, defined as someone who oversees AI projects. Their most common skills are Large Language Models, Retrieval-Augmented Generation and MLOps. The median prior experience is 6 years, and the top roles people moved from are Data Scientist, Product Manager and Software Engineer. The data covers jobs started between January 2023 and July 2025.

Two limits apply. The product manager title itself is not on the list of 25 fastest-growing jobs, so LinkedIn does not list PM among India's fastest-growing jobs. The list also shows no rank for AI managers.

What the list does show is a route. Product managers are one of the main feeder roles into the AI manager title, which fits the postings above: experience in product first, AI depth added on top. For readers weighing that route from other starting points, a post on business analysts moving into product covers one path, and a look at whether associate product manager roles are really entry level covers another.

Where a product management programme fits

A certification does not replace the product experience that the postings above ask for. Product Management with AI is an online certification from BITS School of Management (BITSoM), offered in partnership with Masai, taught in live online classes with an optional campus workshop. Its modules cover product discovery, design and MVPs, building with agentic AI, Agile execution, go-to-market and product metrics.

Existing Masai guides complement the postings: one on the scope of product management with AI in 2026 and another comparing AI tools for product managers.

Frequently asked questions

What does an AI product manager do?

An AI product manager owns a product in which AI is part of the feature or the workflow. In live Indian postings that means shaping AI-driven features such as demand forecasting or agent products, while still owning the roadmap and metrics. Some postings instead mean a PM who uses AI tools for research, specs and analysis.

Does an AI product manager require coding?

It varies by posting. Zeta's PM II role makes at least 3 years of hands-on software development mandatory, while Paytm's AI Payments role says building models is not part of the job. Razorpay's senior role asks for SQL and for something actually built with LLMs. Technical fluency is expected broadly; deep coding only in technical products.

Do product managers have a future?

On current demand, yes. Lenny's Newsletter, using TrueUp data, found open PM roles at tech companies worldwide at their highest in over three years in March 2026, and live Indian postings in October 2026 ask PMs for AI skills instead of dropping the role. That describes demand today, not a forecast.

What is the job demand for product managers in India?

Naukri's JobSpeak covers all roles and has no product-manager line, but its September 2026 index had white-collar hiring up 2% and AI and ML roles up 20%. Among 12 live postings, none was at entry level, so demand is concentrated among experienced hires.

Is AI product manager a separate career from product manager?

The postings treat it as a specialisation. Each of the five postings in the table asks first for years of product management and then adds AI expectations. LinkedIn's 2026 India data names product manager as a top feeder role into the AI manager title, which fits a path that builds on product experience.
