Agentic AI for product managers, from prompts to evals to agents
Agentic AI for product managers: a Paytm posting from August 2026 prefers evals and agent orchestration, and Atlassian found AI saves teams 2 hours a day.
Agentic AI for product managers means products in which a language model takes several steps and calls tools on a user's behalf, with the PM specifying, testing and bounding that behaviour. Paytm's Pi Agents posting, listed on 27 August 2026 by a team called Inference and Agentic AI, prefers hands-on experience building agentic products, including prompt design, evals and agent orchestration.
What does agentic AI mean for a product manager?
A chatbot answers a question. An agent is given a goal, decides which steps to take, calls tools such as a database or a payments API, checks the result and continues until the task is done or it hands back to a person. For a PM, the shift is that the product's behaviour is no longer fully written down in advance. The spec has to describe boundaries and quality, because the exact path is chosen by the model at run time.
That changes how instructions to the model are written and how output quality is measured, and it adds a decision about how much autonomy the agent is allowed. Live Indian job postings are the better test of whether these skills are real.
India's hiring data shows the direction without isolating PMs. Naukri's JobSpeak for September 2026 had AI and ML roles up 20% year on year. For the role-level picture, a post on what an AI product manager does reads five postings that name AI work.
What do live postings say about prompt design, evals and agent orchestration?
Four postings, checked on 30 October 2026, name AI skills in the role text, and each frames them differently.
Paytm's Pi Agents posting asks for 5-9 years of product management experience and says hands-on experience building AI-native or agentic products, including prompt design, evals and agent orchestration, is preferred. Razorpay's Senior Product Manager posting, first published on 6 October 2026, wants a PM who has actually built something with LLMs and calls prompt engineering table stakes. Zeta's Product Manager II posting, listed on 1 October 2026, expects PMs to use AI tools across research, specs, prototyping and analysis.
Paytm's AI Payments posting, listed on 21 October 2026, expects an AI-first mindset while stating that building models is not part of the role. It is a useful corrective: agentic literacy for a PM does not mean training models.
The table maps each skill to the posting or list that names it. The first rows are single employers and the last two are cross-role lists from LinkedIn, so they carry different weight.
| Skill | Named by | Date | How it is framed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prompt design | Paytm, Pi Agents | 27 August 2026 | Preferred, within hands-on agentic experience |
| Evals | Paytm, Pi Agents | 27 August 2026 | Preferred, within hands-on agentic experience |
| Agent orchestration | Paytm, Pi Agents | 27 August 2026 | Preferred, within hands-on agentic experience |
| Prompt engineering and an LLM build | Razorpay, Senior PM | 6 October 2026 | Prompt engineering "table stakes"; something built with LLMs |
| AI tools across research, specs, prototyping and analysis | Zeta, PM II | 1 October 2026 | Expected in the role |
| AI-first mindset | Paytm, AI Payments | 21 October 2026 | Expected; building models not part of the role |
| Prompt Engineering, Workflow Automation, LLMOps, AutoML, API | LinkedIn, Skills on the Rise 2026 India | 24 February 2026 | Among fastest-growing skills, all roles |
| Large Language Models, Retrieval-Augmented Generation, MLOps | LinkedIn, Jobs on the Rise 2026 India | 8 January 2026 | Most common skills of "AI managers" |
Employers do not agree on the bar. Paytm calls hands-on agent experience preferred, Razorpay treats prompting as the baseline, and Zeta frames AI as a set of tools for the PM's own productivity. A candidate preparing for these roles should check which of the three meanings a target employer intends.
How do evals and guardrails fit into a PM's week?
Evals are the skill named in postings that most PMs have not practised. An eval is a repeatable test of whether a model's output is good enough for the feature: a set of example inputs, a definition of a good answer, and a score. It is written before launch and rerun whenever the prompt, the model or the data changes.
The PM's part is the definition of good. Engineers can run the tests, but only the product owner of the feature can say that an answer which is correct but rude fails, or that a refusal is the right result when a user asks for something outside scope.
Guardrails are the limits on what the agent may do: which tools it can call, which actions need human approval, what it must never say or do. They belong in the spec next to the user story. A refund agent, for example, might be allowed to look up an order but not to issue a refund above a set amount without a person's sign-off.
Responsible AI sits in the same part of the spec: privacy of the data the model sees, fairness of outcomes across user groups, and a record of why the agent acted as it did. Atlassian's State of Product 2026 survey of product teams in the US, France and Germany, published on 3 September 2025, found only 60% of product teams make experimentation a regular part of their process, which is a reminder that measurement habits are uneven before AI enters the picture.
When does a feature need an LLM, a retrieval layer or an agent?
The cheapest solution that meets the need is usually the right one. A fixed workflow, where steps are written in code and a model is called for one step such as summarising, is easier to test and cheaper to run than an agent. A retrieval layer, where the model answers from the company's own documents, suits questions with a known source of truth. An agent earns its place when the path to the result varies from case to case and tools must be chosen along the way.
LinkedIn's Jobs on the Rise 2026 India list names Large Language Models, Retrieval-Augmented Generation and MLOps as the most common skills of AI managers, who oversee AI projects. The median prior experience for that title is 6 years, and Product Manager is one of the top roles people moved from. Product managers are therefore being asked to hold the vocabulary of language models, retrieval and operations, not just to write prompts.
Prototyping is how that vocabulary becomes judgement. Zeta's posting names prototyping among the work PMs do with AI tools, and low-code and no-code agent builders let a PM test a flow before engineering time is committed. A prototype answers the question of whether the idea works at all, and an eval answers whether it works well enough to ship.
A general-purpose agent is the hardest version of the problem. A product that promises to do anything has no clear definition of good, so no useful eval. A narrow agent for one workflow, with a measurable success rate and a short list of permitted tools, is far easier to specify and to improve.
What is AI actually doing for product teams so far?
Atlassian's survey of product managers, engineers, designers and programme managers in the US, France and Germany found most teams use 1-3 AI tools daily with moderate productivity gains of about 2 hours a day, mainly for routine tasks and product documentation. It said AI is not yet helping with prioritisation, planning and advanced analytics. The survey is from a vendor and covers the US and Europe, not India.
The same survey found 85% of product professionals feel they have a seat at the strategic table, 84% of product teams worry their current products will not succeed in the market, and only 12% find driving measurable business results rewarding.
In India, CXOtoday, reporting a Nasscom-Indeed report in May 2026, said 86% of employers have seen AI affect job roles and responsibilities, and 35% saw significant redefinition. That is an all-roles employer survey, so it describes the pressure on jobs in general.
For the question of whether product managers have a future, the demand evidence is more direct. Lenny's Newsletter, analysing TrueUp data in March 2026, reported over 7,300 open PM roles at tech companies worldwide, the most since 2022, and said demand for AI PMs is rising fast. Open roles are not hires, and the count is global, but it does not describe a role being removed. Readers who want the tool side can see an existing Masai guide to AI tools for product managers.
Which courses teach GenAI and agentic AI, and how can a PM choose?
A useful test of any course is whether it covers what the postings name: prompt design, evals, agent orchestration and building something with LLMs. It should also end in work that can be shown, because certificates do not replace work samples. Applicants with a technical bar to meet, like Zeta's mandatory software development, need a different route from those aiming at a role like Paytm's AI Payments posting.
An existing guide explains what agentic AI is for readers starting from zero, and a post on PM qualifications checks them against the postings.
Where a product management programme fits
Product Management with AI is an online certification from BITS School of Management (BITSoM), offered in partnership with Masai, taught in live online classes with an optional campus workshop, covering product discovery, design and MVPs, building with agentic AI, Agile execution, go-to-market and product metrics. One of its modules is titled Building with Agentic AI.
Frequently asked questions
What is agentic AI for a product manager?
It means products where a model chooses steps and calls tools to reach a goal, so the PM specifies boundaries, quality tests and permissions instead of a fixed flow. Paytm's Pi Agents posting, listed on 27 August 2026, prefers hands-on experience with prompt design, evals and agent orchestration for this kind of work.
Does an AI product manager require coding?
It depends on the posting. Zeta's PM II role makes at least 3 years of hands-on software development mandatory, while Paytm's AI Payments role says building models is not part of the job. Razorpay's senior role asks for SQL and for something actually built with LLMs, which is closer to prototyping than to model training.
What are AI evals in product management?
An eval is a repeatable test of whether an AI feature's output is good enough, using example inputs, a definition of a good answer and a score. Paytm names evals as a preferred skill in a PM posting, and the PM's main contribution is deciding what counts as good for users.
Will AI replace product owners?
Current evidence points the other way for now. Lenny's Newsletter found open PM roles at tech companies worldwide at their highest in over three years in March 2026, and live Indian postings in October 2026 add AI skills to the PM role instead of dropping it. That describes demand today, not a forecast.
Do product managers have a future?
On the demand data available, yes. Open PM roles at tech companies worldwide were up nearly 20% since the start of 2026 in the TrueUp data analysed by Lenny's Newsletter. The postings that name AI tend to ask for several years of product experience first, so the future favours PMs who add AI skills to a base.
